How to Connect Headphones to an Xbox Series S

Plug a compatible wired headset into the controller, or pair an Xbox-compatible wireless model. Ordinary Bluetooth headphones generally cannot connect directly to Series S.

For a wired headset, plug its 3.5 mm connector into the Xbox Wireless Controller. For wireless play, use a headset explicitly compatible with Xbox Series X|S and follow its Xbox pairing method. Ordinary Bluetooth earbuds and headphones generally cannot pair directly with the Series S for game audio or party chat.

Choose the connection that matches your headset

Headphone type Can it connect directly to Series S? What to do
3.5 mm wired headset with a microphone Yes, if compatible Plug it into the controller’s 3.5 mm headset jack.
3.5 mm headphones without a microphone Yes, for listening Plug them into the controller. They will not provide a microphone for chat.
Xbox Wireless headset Yes Pair it with the console using the headset’s Xbox Wireless instructions.
Third-party wireless headset Only if the exact model supports Xbox Use its Xbox Wireless pairing or Xbox-compatible transmitter and mode.
Ordinary Bluetooth earbuds or headphones Generally no Use a wired headset, an Xbox-compatible wireless headset, or a display-based listening workaround.
Generic USB headset Not guaranteed Check the manufacturer’s specifications for explicit Xbox Series X|S support.
Headset made only for PlayStation or PC Not necessarily Check the exact model and platform edition for Xbox compatibility.

Bluetooth and Xbox Wireless are different connection methods. Microsoft’s controller information describes Bluetooth use with supported PCs and mobile devices, but that does not mean the Series S accepts ordinary Bluetooth audio headsets. See the Xbox Wireless Controller specifications.

Connect a wired headset to the controller

  1. Turn on the Xbox Series S and sign in.
  2. Insert the headset’s 3.5 mm plug fully into the headset jack on the controller. The current Xbox Wireless Controller has this jack; older or unusual Xbox One controllers may not.
  3. Check the headset’s inline mute switch, volume wheel, and microphone boom. Unmute it and raise its volume.
  4. Press the Xbox button to open the guide, then open the audio controls to adjust headset volume and, where available, microphone monitoring and game/chat balance.
  5. Play a game to check sound, then join a party and speak to check the microphone.

A single four-pole TRRS plug is the usual format for stereo sound and microphone through one jack. If your headset has separate headphone and microphone plugs, you may need a compatible adapter. A USB-C plug does not become a headset connection just because the controller’s USB-C port is used for charging.

The Xbox Stereo Headset is one example designed to connect to the controller’s 3.5 mm jack; its wired connection does not require a separate headset battery.

Pair an Xbox Wireless headset

  1. Charge the headset or confirm that its battery is sufficient.
  2. Turn on the console and put the headset into Xbox pairing mode using its power or pair control.
  3. If the headset’s instructions call for it, press the console’s Pair button.
  4. Wait for the connection indicator or audio confirmation described in that headset’s instructions.
  5. Test game audio and microphone input, then adjust headset volume and game/chat balance with the headset controls or Xbox audio settings.

Pairing-button timing and indicator behavior vary by model, so use the instructions for your exact headset rather than assuming every Xbox-compatible model pairs the same way. Microsoft says its Xbox Wireless Headset connects to Xbox consoles through Xbox Wireless without a dongle or base station. Its Bluetooth support is for supported PCs and mobile devices, not a way to pair it to the Series S over Bluetooth.

Set up a third-party wireless headset

“Wireless” does not identify a single console connection method. A headset may pair through Xbox Wireless, use a proprietary 2.4 GHz USB transmitter or base station, or support Bluetooth only. A multi-platform transmitter may also have a dedicated Xbox mode that must be selected.

  • Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model and confirm they explicitly list Xbox Series X|S.
  • Confirm that it supports game audio and, if you need it, Xbox party chat.
  • Check that its transmitter or base station is intended for Xbox consoles and is connected to the required port.
  • Select the Xbox mode if the transmitter offers separate platform modes.
  • Check any stated connection requirements for your model; USB power alone does not show that the console accepts its audio.

Do not assume that a headset marked Bluetooth, USB, or PC-compatible will work with Xbox. Support depends on the specific headset and its Xbox connection method.

Adjust game audio and party chat

  1. Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system → Settings → General → Volume & audio output.
  2. Review headset volume and chat-related controls. Menu wording can shift with console software updates.
  3. In a party, check the overlay for microphone mute status and party-chat output.
  4. If available, adjust Headset chat mixer or the headset’s game/chat balance. Move the balance toward game audio if party members are clear but the game is quiet; move it toward chat if the reverse is true.
  5. Choose a spatial-audio setting only if you want it and your headset and content support it; spatial audio is not required for ordinary headphone listening.

Microsoft lists Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, and DTS Headphone:X among spatial-audio technologies supported on compatible Xbox headsets and consoles. Dolby Atmos and DTS Headphone:X may require additional purchases, apps, subscriptions, or supported hardware or content. See Microsoft’s pages for the Xbox Wireless Headset and Xbox Stereo Headset.

Use Bluetooth earbuds or a TV/monitor headphone jack

Ordinary Bluetooth earbuds generally will not pair directly with the Series S for game audio or Xbox voice chat. Bluetooth pairing to a phone does not establish Xbox-console compatibility.

If your TV or monitor has a headphone output, you may be able to connect wired headphones there for private game listening. The display must route HDMI audio to that jack, and its volume controls may be separate. This path generally does not send microphone input back to the Xbox for party chat.

A Bluetooth transmitter attached to a TV or monitor may send game audio to Bluetooth headphones, but it is a listening workaround, not an equivalent replacement for a supported Xbox headset. It can add audio delay and generally does not provide a reliable Xbox microphone or party-chat path.

Test the connection and troubleshoot by symptom

No sound from a wired headset

  • Unplug and firmly reconnect the 3.5 mm plug; check the headset’s mute and volume controls.
  • Test the headset on another device, then test a known-working headset on the controller. This helps identify whether the headset or controller jack is at fault.
  • Check Xbox headset volume and audio-output settings, then restart the console and controller.
  • If you use an adapter for separate microphone and headphone plugs, check that it is compatible and replace it if needed.
  • Use the Xbox Accessories app where appropriate to check for a controller update, then reconnect the headset.

The microphone does not work

  • Check the inline mute switch, headset mute control, microphone boom position, and party overlay mute status.
  • Confirm that the headset has a microphone and supports Xbox voice chat; listening-only headphones cannot send your voice.
  • If you use a splitter or adapter, check that it supports the headset’s microphone connection.
  • Try the headset directly in the controller rather than through the TV or monitor, whose headphone output generally does not return microphone audio to Xbox.
  • Test another controller if available to help isolate a faulty controller jack.

A Bluetooth headset will not pair, or a wireless headset will not connect

For Bluetooth-only headphones, direct pairing failure is generally expected. For a wireless headset that claims Xbox support, check the exact model’s instructions, make sure it is in Xbox mode rather than Bluetooth or PC mode, and confirm any required transmitter is connected to the console. Pairing with a phone does not prove Xbox compatibility.

A USB headset lights up but has no sound

USB can supply power without the console accepting that headset’s USB audio protocol. Check the headset maker’s compatibility list for the exact model; settings alone cannot guarantee that an unsupported USB headset will work.

Party members are audible but game sound is missing

Check headset volume and move the game/chat balance toward game audio. If game audio is audible but party members are too quiet, move it toward chat and check party output and mute controls.

Sound is delayed

Display-connected Bluetooth transmitters and some third-party adapters can add latency. For gaming and chat, a wired controller connection or native Xbox Wireless/compatible low-latency headset is the more direct path.

Choose the simplest workable setup

  • For the least setup and no headset charging: use a compatible 3.5 mm headset through the controller. The trade-off is a cable between you and the controller.
  • For cable-free console audio and chat: choose an Xbox Wireless headset or a third-party model with explicit Xbox Series X|S support. Check its pairing method and charging requirements.
  • If you already own Bluetooth earbuds: do not count on direct console pairing. A display transmitter may work for listening, with possible delay and no dependable microphone path.
  • If you only need private game sound: the TV or monitor’s headphone output may be enough if it routes HDMI audio, but it is not the usual route for party-chat microphone use.
