Start by identifying your console. Nintendo Switch Lite cannot output video to a TV at all. Original Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED use the HAC-002-era power setup, while Nintendo Switch 2 needs its compatible dock, an NGN-01 adapter (or a properly rated alternative), and an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. For an original Switch or Switch OLED, the fastest safe test is to disconnect every dock cable for at least 30 seconds, reconnect the official adapter directly to a wall outlet and the dock, connect HDMI directly to the TV, select the correct input, and redock the console without its case.
First, identify the symptom and model
“Dock not working” can mean no TV picture, no charging, a flashing LED, dead USB ports, intermittent output, or a console that remains on when docked. The correct fix depends on both the symptom and the hardware generation.
| Console | TV output through a dock? | Power and dock notes |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | Yes | Nintendo recommends the HAC-002 AC adapter. |
| Nintendo Switch OLED Model | Yes | Compatible Switch docks work; LAN-port dock model HEG-007 supports the documented dock-firmware update. |
| Nintendo Switch Lite | No | It does not support TV Mode, so no dock or cable can add TV output. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Yes | Use Switch 2-compatible dock equipment and NGN-01 power, or an alternative solution rated at least 54 W for TV mode. |
See Nintendo’s model and connection guidance at How to Connect Nintendo Switch to a TV and the Switch 2 requirements at No Video Output to TV on Nintendo Switch 2.
Try this 30-second dock reset first
- Remove the console from the dock and turn off the TV.
- Disconnect HDMI and every other cable from the dock.
- Unplug the AC adapter from the wall and from the dock (or console).
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- For an original Switch or Switch OLED, plug the HAC-002 adapter directly into a wall outlet and the dock’s AC ADAPTER port.
- Plug HDMI directly from the dock’s HDMI OUT port to the TV. Temporarily remove HDMI switches, splitters, soundbars, AV receivers, capture cards, and converters.
- Turn on the TV, choose the HDMI input matching that port, and insert the console with its screen facing the dock’s front panel.
This is Nintendo’s recommended first-line procedure for a blank TV screen; it resets the power path and removes intermediary equipment that can prevent HDMI negotiation. Follow the official steps at Blank Screen or No Image Displayed on the TV.

Check the physical setup
Use the correct power adapter
For original Switch hardware, the official adapter is model HAC-002. It should be connected directly to a wall outlet during testing. A third-party adapter may charge a handheld console yet still lack the power or compatibility required for docked video.
Switch 2 is different: Nintendo specifies adapter model NGN-01. HAC-002 can charge Switch 2 directly, but it does not provide enough power for Switch 2 TV mode. Nintendo says an alternative power solution must provide at least 54 W. Details are in Nintendo’s Switch 2 TV-output guidance.
Inspect cables, ports, and seating
- Replace a frayed, split, sharply kinked, or loose power cable.
- Try a known-good HDMI cable and another HDMI port on the TV.
- For Switch 2, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable as specified by Nintendo.
- Remove a protective case that may stop the console from seating fully.
- Check the dock for loose or damaged connectors, bent contacts, dirt, or blocked ventilation.
- Disconnect power before inspecting with a light. Do not scrape inside the USB-C port with metal tools.
If the TV says “No signal” or stays blank
- Confirm the TV input number matches the HDMI socket in use.
- Try another TV HDMI input and a different known-good HDMI cable.
- Connect the dock directly to another TV or monitor, bypassing all audio/video equipment.
- Check whether the console screen turns off after it is fully seated in the powered dock.
- If possible, test the same console with another compatible dock.
If another TV works, the original TV input, port, or compatibility is the likely cause. If another dock works, the first dock is the likely failed component.

Use the console screen as a diagnostic signal
With an original Switch connected to power and a TV, the handheld screen should turn off after proper docking. A screen that remains on can indicate incomplete seating, missing power, an incompatible setup, or a dock fault; it is not automatically proof of a defective dock. Remove the case, verify the cable path, repeat the reset, and test another dock if available.

When the dock charges poorly or not at all
- Charge the console directly with the known-compatible adapter.
- Reconnect that adapter directly to the dock and wall outlet.
- Try another official compatible adapter, if available.
- Try another compatible dock.
If the console will not charge directly, investigate the adapter, outlet, cable, console charging port, or console itself before blaming the dock. If it charges handheld but not in the dock, the dock’s power connection, dock circuitry, or adapter compatibility becomes more likely. Nintendo’s adapter-error guidance is at Error Message: Use the AC Adapter Supplied With the Console.

What a flashing dock LED means
On an original Switch dock, a brief flash when the adapter is connected can be normal. A continuously flashing TV-output LED or absent video requires troubleshooting; Nintendo does not present the LED as a universal fault code.
Confirm HAC-002, reset it by unplugging both ends for 30 seconds, and repeat the direct-to-TV setup. If the console is unresponsive, hold POWER for 12 seconds to force it off, then start it normally. This is a recovery step, not a routine first restart. See TV Output LED on the Nintendo Switch Dock Is Flashing.
Update the dock and console

Switch 2
On Switch 2, open System Settings > System > Dock Update. Keep the dock and console ventilated and do not obstruct their vents. Nintendo’s adapter message and update guidance appears at Error Message: Use the AC Adapter Supplied With the Console on Nintendo Switch 2.
If the USB ports do not work but TV output does
USB failure is a separate dock problem from video failure. Test every USB port with a known-compatible device, such as a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, Joy-Con Charging Grip, Nintendo Switch LAN Adapter, or GameCube Controller Adapter. Confirm the dock has power and install available console and dock updates. Do not assume every USB device is supported. If compatible devices remain unrecognized while TV output works, the dock may need service. Nintendo’s supported-device guidance is at USB Ports Not Working on the Nintendo Switch Dock.

| Test result | Most likely conclusion |
|---|---|
| A different HDMI cable restores video | The original HDMI cable is faulty. |
| A different adapter restores docking | The original adapter was damaged or incompatible. |
| A different dock works with the same console | The first dock likely needs service or replacement. |
| A different TV works | The first TV input, port, or compatibility is involved. |
| The console will not charge directly | Investigate the console, adapter, outlet, or charging connection. |
| Switch Lite never displays on a TV | That is an expected hardware limitation. |
| Switch 2 fails with HAC-002 in TV mode | The adapter is incompatible for Switch 2 docked output. |
Replace, repair, or contact Nintendo?
Replace a clearly damaged HDMI cable or adapter after a comparison test. Consider an official replacement dock only after another dock confirms the console works. Nintendo’s replacement dock listing notes that the console, Joy-Con controllers, AC adapter, and HDMI cable are not included: Nintendo Switch Dock.

Stop home troubleshooting and request service when a known-good adapter and HDMI cable fail, the console will not charge directly, the dock or console has visible damage, hardware overheats, the connection repeatedly drops, or another TV and dock still produce no output. Include the console, dock, and relevant adapter so Nintendo can inspect the complete setup. Start with Nintendo’s blank-screen support page or the Switch 2 support guidance at Nintendo Switch 2 TV troubleshooting.
A third-party dock or charger may be cheaper or smaller, but compatibility, power delivery, firmware behavior, safety, and warranty implications vary. Do not treat one as equivalent to Nintendo’s hardware without model-specific evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Switch charge but not show on the TV?
Charging confirms only that some power is reaching the console. Test the TV input, HDMI cable and port, direct TV connection, console seating, and another dock; Switch 2 also needs compatible dock power.
Can I use an old Switch dock with Switch 2?
No. Nintendo says the original Switch dock, adapter, and HDMI cable cannot provide Switch 2 TV mode. Use Switch 2-compatible equipment.
Can Switch Lite connect to a TV?
No. Switch Lite hardware does not support TV Mode.
Why do the dock’s USB ports not work?
Test a supported Nintendo accessory in each port with the dock powered. If TV output works but compatible USB devices do not, the dock may require service.
Should I buy a new dock or AC adapter?
Buy only after testing isolates that component. A known-good adapter or dock comparison prevents replacing the wrong part.
