1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“Denuvo driver” usually means the Windows kernel-mode driver used by Denuvo Anti-Cheat—not every Denuvo technology found in a game. Denuvo says its anti-cheat driver for Windows 10 and 11 runs only while a protected game is active, rather than starting with Windows. That is a vendor statement, and each game’s integration can differ. The driver’s kernel privilege makes it more powerful—and potentially more consequential if incompatible—than an ordinary game process.
First, separate Denuvo Anti-Cheat from Denuvo Anti-Tamper
Denuvo is a portfolio of game-protection products. An installer or error message that says “Denuvo” does not by itself prove that a kernel anti-cheat driver is present.
| Technology | Primary function | Kernel driver assumed? |
|---|---|---|
| Denuvo Anti-Cheat | Detects and helps block cheating in competitive games. | Yes, in its kernel anti-cheat implementation. |
| Denuvo Anti-Tamper / Anti-Piracy | Protects licensing and game executables against piracy and tampering. | Do not assume it is the same driver. |
| Denuvo Anti-Leak | Helps protect pre-release content and trace leaks. | Separate product. |
| Denuvo Behavioral Anti-Cheat | Uses behavioral analysis and machine learning to identify bots or non-human play. | Not automatically a kernel driver. |
Denuvo describes these as separate layers across its game-protection portfolio (Denuvo Anti-Cheat overview). Its anti-piracy product has a different purpose (Denuvo Anti-Piracy). This article focuses on the Anti-Cheat kernel component.
What a kernel-mode driver actually is
Windows separates ordinary applications into user mode and trusted system components into kernel mode. A game normally runs in user mode, with operating-system protections limiting what it can access. A kernel-mode driver can interact with core operating-system functions, memory, processes and other drivers at a much deeper level.

That visibility is the technical reason an anti-cheat may use a driver: sophisticated cheats can themselves use drivers, hypervisors or memory manipulation that user-mode software cannot reliably observe. Denuvo explains its rationale in its kernel-mode driver explanation. Kernel access is a defensive trade-off, not proof that detections are always correct or that every ban is justified.
Denuvo rejects calling its component a “rootkit,” saying it does not try to hide and can be removed (Denuvo’s explanation of common myths). That is the company’s characterization, not an independent forensic finding. The more useful fact for a player is that kernel software has a broader privilege boundary than a normal application, so a bug or compromised update could have a larger security or stability impact.
What the Denuvo Anti-Cheat driver does
Low-level visibility plus other detection layers
The driver can provide visibility into processes, memory and drivers that user-mode anti-cheat cannot reach. Denuvo presents it as one layer alongside server-side enforcement, behavioral analysis and game-specific integration; kernel access alone does not guarantee effective or fair detection.
Competitive modes are the usual trigger
Denuvo’s published comparison says its driver is not required for non-competitive modes in the implementation it describes. A particular game may still require it for all online play, only ranked matches, or another protected session. Check the title’s support and privacy documentation rather than inferring its rules from another game.

Does it run at startup or all the time?
Denuvo’s current kernel anti-cheat page says the driver “runs only during gameplay” and supports Windows 10/11. Its earlier FAQ says it is activated when protected competitive features are accessed and does not start with Windows. “Gameplay” can include loading, matchmaking, ranked menus or a protected session, not only the moment you control a character.
Keep these four states separate:
- Installed: files and perhaps an Installed apps entry are on the PC.
- Loaded: Windows has loaded the driver into the kernel.
- Active: the game or protected mode is using anti-cheat.
- Required: the game refuses access without it.
An installed entry does not prove that the driver is currently loaded or scanning. Conversely, a game can require the component only when a particular mode starts.
Is the Denuvo driver safe?
Security and signing
Denuvo presents the driver as a legitimate commercial component. Microsoft treats driver signing and Code Integrity as important protections in Windows (Windows driver policy guidance). Those controls reduce the chance of unauthorized code loading, but they do not make every signed driver bug-free or eliminate the trust decision.
Privacy claims and their limits
Denuvo says personally identifiable information does not leave the machine and that its product is designed to comply with GDPR and CPRA. It also says the anti-cheat sends information about how the operating system interacts with the game to its servers for cheat detection. The public material does not provide a complete, title-by-title inventory of signals, retention periods, processors or publisher-specific data flows.

Before installing, read:
- The game publisher’s privacy policy.
- Denuvo/Irdeto’s current privacy notice.
- The game’s EULA and anti-cheat notice.
- Any explanation of whether telemetry is processed by the publisher, Denuvo/Irdeto, cloud providers or multiple parties.
Compatibility risk
Kernel software can conflict with Windows security features, antivirus products, virtualization, debuggers, overlays, hardware-monitoring tools and other kernel components. Microsoft recommends checking for an updated application or driver before disabling Memory Integrity/HVCI (Microsoft’s driver-compatibility guidance). Do not disable Windows protections merely to bypass an error without understanding the security cost.
Does Denuvo hurt game performance?
There is no responsible universal yes-or-no answer. Denuvo says releases are performance-tested and that customers report no noticeable gameplay impact (Denuvo’s product claims). That is not an independent, reproducible benchmark across every game, patch and hardware configuration.
If a title officially permits a comparison, measure under the same conditions:
- Average frame rate and 1% lows.
- Frame-time spikes and stutter.
- CPU utilization and loading times.
- Crashes or freezes.
- Results after a clean reboot with current Windows, graphics and chipset drivers.
A performance change after installing a game does not establish that Denuvo caused it; game patches, shader compilation, launchers and other services can produce the same symptoms.

How to uninstall Denuvo Anti-Cheat
Use supported Windows controls first. Removing the component can disable ranked or online multiplayer, and launching the game later may reinstall it.
- Close the game and its launcher.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps (or press
Windows+R, enterms-settings:appsfeatures, and press Enter). - Search for Denuvo, Denuvo Anti-Cheat or the game’s anti-cheat entry.
- Open the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Launch the game only if you accept that it may reinstall the component or refuse protected multiplayer access.
Denuvo says removal through Add or Remove Programs is supported and that the component is removed with the game in relevant implementations (Denuvo FAQ). Individual games and patches can differ. One publisher, for example, documented that a game patch was needed for Denuvo removal (KRAFTON support notice).
If the uninstall entry is missing
- Verify the game through its launcher.
- Install the latest game patch and restart Windows.
- Check the publisher’s support page for that exact title.
- If instructed by the publisher, reinstall the official anti-cheat component, then remove it normally.
- Contact the publisher or Denuvo support with the game version and Windows details.
Do not delete arbitrary .sys files, edit the registry, disable Secure Boot or use third-party driver-removal tools as a first-line fix. Manual kernel-driver removal can leave broken services and reduce Windows security.
What to do if the game stops launching
- Install the game’s latest patch, verify its files and reboot.
- Update Windows and hardware drivers.
- Temporarily check whether antivirus or endpoint-security software is blocking installation, following that product’s supported exception process.
- Review conflicts involving virtual machines, hypervisors, debuggers, overlays and hardware-monitoring utilities.
- Note whether failure occurs at launch, matchmaking or only in ranked play.
If Windows is blocking a driver, preserve the event details and let the game publisher provide the compatible build. Do not bypass driver protections simply to make the game start.

How to identify a Windows driver block
- Open Event Viewer by running
eventvwr.msc. - Go to Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → CodeIntegrity → Operational.
- Record the event ID, driver filename, publisher/signature information and timestamp.
- Also record the game version, Windows build and the point of failure.
Microsoft documents Event 3076 as a driver that was audited and would have been blocked in enforcement mode, and Event 3077 as a driver blocked from loading (Code Integrity guidance). A Denuvo-related filename still does not prove Denuvo is the root cause; the publisher may need to update its integration.
Denuvo on Linux, Proton and Steam Deck
Denuvo says compatible Windows games can run through Proton and on Steam Deck when the game itself is compatible (current kernel anti-cheat documentation). That is not a promise that every Denuvo-protected title works on Linux. Proton configuration, launcher behavior, anti-cheat settings and the game’s own Steam Deck support all remain decisive.
How it compares with other kernel anti-cheat systems
Riot Vanguard, BattlEye, Easy Anti-Cheat, Ricochet and Denuvo Anti-Cheat are separate products. A “kernel-mode” label does not tell you when a driver starts, what it scans, how long it remains installed or how bans are reviewed.
| Question | Denuvo Anti-Cheat | Other products |
|---|---|---|
| Starts at Windows boot? | Denuvo says no for its published model. | Verify per product and game. |
| Runs during competitive play? | Yes, where the game requires it. | Verify per game. |
| Required for single-player? | Denuvo says no in its published comparison. | Verify per game. |
| Kernel component? | Yes, in the kernel anti-cheat implementation. | Varies. |
| Removed with game uninstall? | Denuvo says this is supported in relevant implementations. | Verify per product. |
| Consumer pricing? | No public consumer plan; it is a publisher/developer service. | Usually no consumer signup. |
A practical decision checklist
- Is the competitive mode optional?
- Can you play offline or single-player without anti-cheat?
- Does the publisher explain data collection clearly?
- Does the title support your Windows security, virtualization and hardware setup?
- Are you comfortable granting kernel-level access?
- Is Steam Deck or Proton support documented for this specific game?
- Can the component be removed through official Windows controls?
- Is there a clear publisher support route for driver conflicts?
Bottom line
Denuvo Anti-Cheat is a legitimate commercial anti-cheat component according to its publisher, and its published Windows model says the kernel driver does not start with Windows and runs only while a protected game is active. Those assurances do not erase the trade-off: kernel software has elevated privilege, game integrations vary, privacy details are not universal, and independent title-specific performance evidence is limited. Identify which Denuvo product you actually have, use Windows’ supported uninstall and diagnostic paths, and treat the game publisher—not a generic “Denuvo” label—as the authority for that title’s requirements.
