Should You Disable Hyper-V for Gaming? What Actually Helps on Windows 10 and 11

Hyper-V is not an automatic FPS problem. Learn which Windows virtualization feature is active, what to test first, and why BIOS virtualization should usually stay enabled.

Usually, no. Do not disable Hyper-V just because you play games, and do not turn off Intel VT-x or AMD-V/SVM in BIOS as a first step. On Windows 10 and 11, any performance effect is system- and game-dependent. Leave virtualization and Memory Integrity enabled unless a repeatable test shows stutter, a driver conflict, an emulator problem, or a third-party virtual machine running in a slower compatibility mode.

The safest approach is to identify which layer is active, change one Windows setting at a time, benchmark the same workload, and restore protection if it does not make a meaningful difference.

Hyper-V is not one switch

Hyper-V is Microsoft’s hypervisor and virtualization platform. Its optional management tools can be installed without a virtual machine currently running, but an active Windows hypervisor can affect third-party virtualization software. Microsoft says VMware Workstation and VirtualBox may fail to start a VM or fall back to a slower compatibility mode when Hyper-V is active: Microsoft’s Hyper-V compatibility guidance.

Other Windows components use the same virtualization layer:

Layer or feature What it does Why a gamer might notice it
Hyper-V Microsoft’s hypervisor and VM platform Can conflict with VMware, VirtualBox and some VM tools
Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) Uses the hypervisor to isolate security functions May add overhead that varies by hardware
Memory integrity (HVCI) Checks kernel code and drivers in an isolated environment Can expose incompatible drivers; older CPUs may incur more impact
Virtual Machine Platform (VMP) Windows virtualization component used by features such as WSL2 Disabling it can stop Linux, containers or some emulators
Windows Hypervisor Platform (WHP) API layer for software that uses the Windows hypervisor May change how third-party VM or emulator software operates
Credential Guard and enterprise policies Additional VBS-based protections May keep the hypervisor active even after Hyper-V tools are unchecked

Therefore, unchecking only Hyper-V does not prove that the hypervisor or VBS is gone.

Does Hyper-V reduce FPS?

There is no universal FPS penalty and no reliable promise of a 10–20 percent gain from disabling it. A modern processor may show no meaningful change, while an older CPU or a system running VBS and Memory Integrity may show measurable frame-time or 1% low differences. Microsoft’s documentation describes a hardware-dependent security/performance trade-off, not one percentage that applies to every game: Microsoft’s Memory Integrity documentation.

Do not treat low FPS or high CPU usage as proof. Shader compilation, graphics drivers, overlays, recording software, thermal throttling, RAM pressure and game-engine behavior are more common causes. Hyper-V is a stronger suspect when a VM application explicitly reports a conflict, an emulator performs abnormally, or a driver is incompatible with Memory Integrity.

When testing a change is reasonable

  • Persistent frame-time spikes or stutter remain after ordinary game and driver troubleshooting.
  • A controlled enabled-versus-disabled comparison shows a repeatable improvement.
  • VMware or VirtualBox reports that Hyper-V is active or is using a slower mode.
  • An Android emulator reports a Hyper-V incompatibility or is substantially slower than expected.
  • A game, anti-cheat component or peripheral has a documented virtualization or driver conflict.
  • Memory Integrity identifies a legacy driver that will not work correctly.

Anti-cheat requirements are title- and vendor-specific. Disabling Hyper-V is neither a universal fix nor a universal cause of launch failures; check the particular game’s current support documentation.

Check what is actually active

Use System Information

  1. Press Win+R, enter msinfo32.exe, and press Enter.
  2. In System Summary, look for “A hypervisor has been detected. Features required for Hyper-V will not be displayed.”

That message means the Windows hypervisor is running. Microsoft documents this check here: Hyper-V troubleshooting.

Record Memory Integrity and security status

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Choose Device security, then Core isolation details.
  3. Record whether Memory integrity is On or Off, and note any VBS status shown on the Device security page.

Memory Integrity is a VBS feature, not a synonym for the Hyper-V optional role. Its purpose is to make kernel attacks and malicious drivers harder: Windows Security device protection.

Optional PowerShell diagnostic

Run PowerShell as an administrator and use:

Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_DeviceGuard -Namespace rootMicrosoftWindowsDeviceGuard

The Win32_DeviceGuard class exposes VBS-related status fields: Microsoft’s Win32_DeviceGuard reference.

Disable the least amount necessary

1. Test Memory Integrity first

  1. Open Windows Security → Device security → Core isolation details.
  2. Set Memory integrity to Off.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Repeat the same game test with identical settings and background applications.

Windows 11 version 22H2 and later can display a warning when Memory Integrity is off. Turning it off removes HVCI protection; Microsoft also warns that incompatible drivers can malfunction and, rarely, contribute to boot problems: Memory Integrity compatibility guidance.

2. Test relevant Windows features

If the first test changes nothing and you do not need virtualization workloads, search Windows for Turn Windows features on or off. Test only the relevant entries, restarting when prompted:

  • Virtual Machine Platform
  • Windows Hypervisor Platform
  • Hyper-V and its subcomponents

Disabling these can stop or degrade WSL2, Docker, Windows Sandbox, Windows Subsystem for Android, Android emulators and virtual machines. Do not uncheck WSL, Sandbox or another dependent feature without accepting that consequence.

3. Advanced boot test

For a reversible diagnostic, an administrator can run:

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off

Restart, test, then restore normal launching with:

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto

This is more disruptive and may not override VBS, Memory Integrity, Credential Guard or enterprise policy. Microsoft’s documented optional-feature methods are the safer ordinary-user route: Hyper-V disablement methods.

Run an A/B test instead of guessing

  1. Use the same game build, map or benchmark, graphics settings, resolution, refresh rate and frame cap.
  2. Keep the same driver and background applications.
  3. Let shaders and caches settle before measuring.
  4. Run the scenario at least three times with features enabled and three times with the test change applied.
  5. Record average FPS, 1% lows, frame-time graphs, crashes, input latency if available and anti-cheat behavior.
  6. Change one major variable at a time.

Re-enable the feature when the difference is within normal run-to-run variation. Frame-time consistency can matter more than a small average-FPS change.

Do not disable BIOS virtualization for this problem

Intel VT-x, AMD-V or SVM in UEFI/BIOS are processor capabilities. Hyper-V, VBS, WSL2, virtual machines, Android emulators and Windows Sandbox use them, but Windows controls those features separately. Turning firmware virtualization off is a broad change that can break unrelated software. Microsoft’s distinction between firmware virtualization and Virtual Machine Platform is explained at Enable virtualization on Windows.

Do not disable Secure Boot or TPM as a routine gaming tweak, and do not change security policy on an employer- or school-managed PC.

Choose the trade-off deliberately

Choice Possible benefit Cost
Leave everything enabled Often no meaningful gaming penalty; preserves protections and virtualization workloads Any system-specific VBS overhead remains
Disable Memory Integrity only Isolates a driver or HVCI conflict Removes kernel-code protection and triggers a Windows warning
Disable VMP or WHP May resolve a particular emulator or compatibility issue Can break WSL2, Sandbox, containers or VM tools
Disable Hyper-V components May restore third-party hypervisor performance Removes Hyper-V functionality and dependent features
Disable hypervisor launch at boot Provides a stronger conflict test More disruptive; security features may stop working
Disable VT-x/AMD-V/SVM in BIOS Rarely relevant Can disable broad virtualization support and complicate recovery

Common failure cases and rollback

Hypervisor detected after Hyper-V was unchecked

Check Memory Integrity, VBS, Virtual Machine Platform, Windows Hypervisor Platform, Credential Guard and enterprise policy. Restart after every feature change. A dependent component such as Sandbox can keep the hypervisor active. Microsoft explains these dependencies in its third-party virtualization guidance: Hyper-V compatibility guidance.

A driver or Windows installation becomes unstable

Restore Memory Integrity from Windows Security → Device security → Core isolation details when possible. If Windows cannot boot, use Windows Recovery Environment and follow Microsoft’s HVCI recovery procedure; registry changes and Secure Boot changes belong only in that documented recovery scenario, not as routine optimization: HVCI recovery documentation. Create a restore point or recovery media before advanced changes.

A game stops launching

Restore the last changed feature, restart, and check the title’s anti-cheat and security requirements. The cause may be Secure Boot, TPM, a disabled emulator component, a driver or an unrelated game issue.

Settings change after an upgrade or reinstall

Recheck msinfo32.exe and Windows Security after major Windows, firmware or driver updates. Microsoft documents automatic Memory Integrity enablement for certain clean Windows 11 installations and Secured-core PCs when compatible processors, drivers, virtualization, at least 8 GB of RAM and an SSD of at least 64 GB are present: Windows HVCI enablement criteria.

Quick decision guide

  • No measurable gaming problem: leave Hyper-V, VBS and Memory Integrity enabled.
  • VMware or VirtualBox is slow: investigate the documented Hyper-V/VBS conflict before changing BIOS settings.
  • Emulator will not start: identify whether it requires the Windows hypervisor or a separate virtualization mode; do not disable components blindly.
  • Driver failure or stutter with Memory Integrity: test Memory Integrity first and check driver compatibility.
  • Work, school or security-managed PC: consult the administrator before changing VBS or Credential Guard.
  • Windows Security warns after the change: that warning is expected when Memory Integrity is off; restore it if testing shows no clear benefit.
