A USB hard drive is the easiest all-purpose buy; an SSD can reduce some storage-related delays, but it cannot give a PS4 newer-console performance. Whether to invest further depends on your game library, the condition of your console, and the total cost of the upgrades.
Which PS4 upgrades are worth buying first?
Start with the problem you actually have. Storage is the most broadly useful upgrade; a controller, headset, network change, or repair is worthwhile when it fixes a specific frustration. A wheel or flight stick is a more substantial experience upgrade, but only for compatible games.
- Running out of room: Add a USB extended-storage drive.
- Slow or failing internal drive: Consider a 2.5-inch SATA SSD, especially as a replacement for a failing drive.
- Drift, dead buttons, or poor battery life: Replace the controller.
- Chat or game audio is the issue: Choose a wired or explicitly PS4-compatible headset.
- Disconnects, loud fan, or overheating: Improve the network or ventilation, or arrange service before spending on extras.
Sony’s PS4 accessories page separates PS4-compatible products from newer PlayStation accessories. Check the exact model’s compatibility rather than assuming that “PlayStation-compatible” means full PS4 support.
What storage should you add to a PS4?
For most owners, an external USB hard drive is the simplest way to expand a game library. It is easy to install and costs less per terabyte than an SSD in many markets. An external SSD is a reasonable speed-focused choice, but results vary by game and the PS4’s hardware. Either type can hold PS4 applications; extended storage does not hold saves, themes, or screenshots and video clips.

PlayStation supports extended storage on system software version 4.50 or later with a USB 3.0 or later device between 250GB and 8TB. Connect it directly to the console, not through a USB hub; only one drive can be active as extended storage at a time. Sony notes that operation is not guaranteed for every drive model. See its PS4 external storage requirements and troubleshooting before buying.
Set up and manage extended storage
- Connect the drive directly to a PS4 USB port.
- Open Settings > Devices > USB Storage Devices, select the drive, then choose Format as Extended Storage. Formatting erases the drive’s contents.
- To install new applications there by default, open Settings > Storage, press OPTIONS, choose Application Install Location, then select Extended Storage.
- To move installed games, open Settings > Storage, select the storage containing the applications, choose Applications, press OPTIONS, select Move to Extended Storage or Move to System Storage, select titles, then choose Move.
Stop using a drive before disconnecting it: use Quick menu > Sound/Devices > Stop Using Extended Storage, or open Settings > Devices > USB Storage Devices and select Stop Using This Extended Storage. Games stored there cannot launch while it is disconnected. If a drive is not recognized, try another port or cable and connect it directly; a speed warning is a reason to try a different USB 3.0-or-later drive. If the PS4 asks to repair storage after an unsafe disconnect, follow the on-screen process. A drive can also interfere with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth; move it farther from the console if connections become unreliable. If duplicate copies of an application are on both drives, delete one copy before using extended storage normally.
Is an internal SSD worth installing?
An internal 2.5-inch SATA SSD is most compelling when the original drive is failing or you are comfortable replacing it as a maintenance job. It may make some loading and storage-related tasks feel quicker, but it does not change the CPU or GPU, guarantee shorter waits in every game, or increase frame rates. Avoid paying extra for NVMe or PCIe speeds: the PS4’s internal drive bay uses SATA.

Replacing the internal drive is more disruptive than adding external storage. PlayStation’s PS4 drive replacement guide calls for backing up saves, identifying the model, having a long Phillips screwdriver, and preparing a USB device with at least 1GB of free space for system software reinstallation. PlayStation Plus cloud saves are another save-backup option. Obtain the system-software reinstallation file and follow Sony’s current instructions for its folder and filename requirements; a routine update file should not be assumed to initialize a blank drive.

Identify the model before opening it
Find the CUH model number on the console label and use the matching instructions in Sony’s guide. The guide groups the original PS4 as CUH-1000, CUH-1100, and CUH-1200 series; Slim as CUH-2015 series; and Pro as CUH-7000 series. In each case, back up data, remove the drive and its mounting bracket, replace the drive, reinstall system software, and restore saves. The cover and drive-access steps differ by model, so do not use one model’s disassembly sequence for another.
When should you replace the controller?
A worn controller can make an otherwise serviceable console frustrating to use. Replace it if it has stick drift, unresponsive buttons, unreliable Bluetooth, a damaged charging port, a weak battery, or worn triggers. The genuine DUALSHOCK 4 is the safest feature match, but availability and pricing vary by region because it is an older product. Check current stock with local retailers rather than assuming a particular price.

An officially licensed alternative is worth considering if its exact model clearly supports PS4. Sony’s Official Licensed Product program says licensed peripherals are designed for the relevant platform and confirmed by licensees to meet SIE standards; that does not mean every controller reproduces every DUALSHOCK 4 feature. Confirm support for the touchpad, motion controls, headset connection, wireless pairing, and wired operation if those matter to your games. Avoid vague listings that say only “for PS4/PC/mobile.”
Which headset, charging dock, or cable makes sense?
Headset: choose by connection and comfort
A wired headset connected to the DUALSHOCK 4’s 3.5mm jack is a straightforward choice for many players. Prioritize comfort, a clear adjustable microphone, and accessible game/chat volume controls. For a wireless model, verify that the product explicitly supports PS4 and note whether it needs a USB transmitter; PS4 does not pair with every Bluetooth headset. Sony’s PS4 accessories listing includes licensed audio products, but newer PlayStation headsets may be designed primarily for PS5 or other devices. Do not pay for PS5-specific features you cannot use on PS4.

Sony says its DUALSHOCK 4 charging station charges up to two controllers at once. A dock earns its space if you regularly use two controllers or want a dedicated place to store them. Check controller-revision compatibility, charging contacts, stability, indicator lights, and whether the required power adapter is included. If you have one controller and a reliable Micro-USB cable, the dock is optional convenience rather than an upgrade.

HDMI cable: replace a fault, not a working picture
Replace an HDMI cable if it causes flickering, dropouts, no signal, or a connection that fails when moved. A more expensive cable cannot improve the picture when the existing connection is already working. PS4 Pro owners with a 4K HDR display should first check the TV input, console video settings, display compatibility, and cable condition. Sony lists an officially licensed 10-foot PowerA HDMI cable as supporting 4K HDR with compatible displays; that is a compatibility claim, not evidence that every PS4 needs a new cable.

Use Ethernet for a more consistent connection
If the console is near the router, a normal Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable is a sensible low-cost way to avoid some Wi-Fi instability. It cannot fix a slow internet plan, a poor router, or a distant game server, and buying an expensive “gaming” cable does not guarantee lower latency. If wiring is impractical, improve router placement or coverage; use a 5GHz network where supported and suitable for the distance and walls in your home. Mesh, powerline, or MoCA equipment addresses home-network coverage or wiring, not PS4 processing performance.
For Remote Play, PlayStation recommends a broadband connection of at least 5Mbps and recommends 15Mbps or higher for a better experience, according to its PS4 accessories and Remote Play information. A faster connection alone does not ensure a smooth session if local Wi-Fi or the remote device is the bottleneck.

Clean and ventilate a loud or hot console
Clear dust from vents and give the console open space; avoid shutting it inside a cramped TV cabinet. If it remains unusually loud, overheats, or shuts down, the cause could include a failing fan or aging thermal material, not just surface dust. Back up important data before any disassembly. If you are not comfortable opening the console, use a repair service. Cleaning may restore quieter operation, but it cannot add graphical features or make a base PS4 equivalent to a Pro.
Which specialty accessories are worth considering?
Racing wheel and pedals
A compatible wheel can transform supported racing games, but it is a genre-specific purchase. Compare force feedback, pedal quality, rotation range, mounting options, and the exact game’s support before choosing. Sony’s PS4 accessories page lists licensed options from brands including Logitech, Fanatec, Thrustmaster, and Hori; models and availability vary.
Flight stick and fighting stick
The Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas 4 is listed by Sony as licensed for PS4 and PS5, making it relevant to compatible flight games rather than a general-purpose controller replacement. For a fighting stick, verify support in the exact game and decide whether you prefer a lever or leverless layout before spending.
Capture card
A capture card is for recording or streaming, not for improving the game’s image on the console. A typical setup runs HDMI from PS4 to the capture device, HDMI pass-through from the device to a display, and USB from the device to a computer running recording or streaming software. It is unnecessary for players who only want a better-looking picture on their TV.

These are planning bands, not current price quotes; stock and prices vary by country and retailer. Before buying several premium accessories, compare the total with a used, refurbished, or new-generation console. Further PS4 spending is easiest to justify if you already own a substantial library, prefer physical PS4 games, or are fixing a specific fault.
