There is no universal fix for GTA V crashes on Epic. The correct path depends on whether you have GTAV Enhanced or GTAV Legacy, and whether the failure occurs in Epic Games Launcher, before the game window appears, at BattlEye startup, or during Story Mode or GTA Online. Work through the low-risk checks first, then use the branch that matches your symptom.

Identify your edition and the exact crash point

Epic-distributed GTA V still uses Rockstar account authentication and Rockstar Games Launcher components. Start the game from Epic Games Launcher, not an old desktop shortcut, batch file, command prompt, or undocumented launch command.

Enhanced or Legacy?

Rockstar currently lists both editions on its product page: GTAV Enhanced and GTAV Legacy. Check the edition name in your Epic Library, Rockstar Games Launcher, installation entry, or title screen before applying advice. A PC that runs Legacy may not meet Enhanced’s requirements.

Edition Recommended configuration
GTAV Enhanced Windows 11; AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or Intel Core i5-9600K; 16 GB dual-channel RAM; NVIDIA RTX 3060 8 GB or AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT 8 GB; 105 GB on a DirectStorage-compatible drive.
GTAV Legacy Windows 10; Intel Core i5-3470 or AMD FX-8350; 8 GB RAM; NVIDIA GTX 660 2 GB or AMD HD7870 2 GB; 125 GB storage.

These are Rockstar’s recommended, not minimum, specifications. Requirements can change, and some mobile or integrated graphics configurations may be unsupported.

The computer reboots, freezes, or blue-screens Investigate hardware, power, temperatures, RAM stability, overclocking, and Windows errors rather than treating it as an ordinary game crash.

Work through the safe fixes in order

  1. Restart Windows. This clears a stuck launcher, driver process, or anti-cheat service.
  2. Check service status and updates. Confirm Epic services are available, update Epic Games Launcher and Rockstar Games Launcher, install pending Windows updates, and update your GPU driver. Launch once while connected to the internet so available GTA V patches can apply. Rockstar’s general checklist is documented at Rockstar Support; Epic’s launcher checks are at Epic Games Help.
  3. Use the normal launch path. Sign in to the Rockstar account linked to your Epic purchase, open Epic’s Library, and select GTA V there. Do not add copied launch arguments while diagnosing.
  4. Verify the installation. In Epic, open Library, use GTA V’s three-dot menu, choose Manage, then select the available Verify or Verify Files control. Labels can change between launcher versions. Wait for completion before launching. Verification can replace missing or damaged game files, but it cannot repair hardware, Windows components, or mods stored outside the verified files. Rockstar’s Epic instructions are at this support article.
  5. Remove injected software temporarily. Back up, then move out of the GTA V folder any ScriptHookV files, dinput8.dll, ASI loaders, ReShade, Special_K, ENB, FiveM/RAGE Plugin Hook components, and other DLL injectors. Also disable Discord, NVIDIA or AMD, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, audio enhancers, and motherboard-utility overlays. A clean launch is a diagnostic test; restore items one at a time only after the unmodified game works.
  6. Repair bundled runtimes. Open the actual GTA V installation folder from Epic’s Manage page. In its Redistributables folder, run the DirectX and Visual C++ installers. Rockstar’s default Rockstar-launcher path is C:Program FilesRockstar GamesGrand Theft Auto VRedistributables, but Epic installations may be elsewhere. Use bundled or official Microsoft installers, never random DLL-download sites.
  7. Test permissions and fullscreen handling. In Epic, open GTA V’s three-dot menu, choose Manage, click the folder icon, right-click GTAV.exe, and select Properties → Compatibility. As a controlled test, enable Run this program as an administrator and Disable fullscreen optimizations, apply, and relaunch. Administrator mode is not a performance upgrade; undo it if it changes nothing or creates privilege mismatches with launcher or overlay processes.

Fix crashes at BattlEye startup

BattlEye is required to connect to official GTA Online servers. It is principally an Online branch, so a Story Mode crash without BattlEye on screen may have another cause. Rockstar’s current procedure is in BattlEye troubleshooting.

  1. Close GTA V and open Rockstar Games Launcher.
  2. Open Settings and enable the BattlEye checkbox.
  3. Under My installed games, select GTA V and scroll to Launch arguments. Disable launch options and leave the box blank.
  4. In Epic Games Launcher, open Library → GTA V three-dot menu → Manage. Ensure Epic Launch Options are disabled and the text box is blank.
  5. Remove ReShade, Special_K, and other injectors. Rockstar identifies ReShade and Special_K as known BattlEye compatibility problems, even when antivirus exceptions exist.
  6. Launch directly through Epic or Rockstar, not a shortcut, .bat file, or command prompt.

Rockstar lists the default Epic BattlEye folder as C:Program FilesEpic GamesGTAVBattlEye. If your library is on another drive, use its real path. A narrow antivirus exclusion for that folder can be a temporary test, not a reason to disable protection permanently. Rockstar specifically notes AVG and Trend Micro compatibility issues and provides vendor-specific exception guidance.

Fix ERR_GFX_STATE and graphics-related closes

For the specific ERR_GFX_STATE error, Rockstar recommends current GPU drivers, testing an earlier stable driver if the problem began after an update, and changing the graphics API. Follow the targeted instructions at Rockstar’s ERR_GFX_STATE article.

  1. Update the GPU driver. If the newest driver does not help, test a known-stable earlier driver, particularly when the crashes began immediately after updating.
  2. Launch GTA V and open Settings → Graphics.
  3. Under Advanced Settings, set the option to Unlocked.
  4. Change Graphics API from Vulkan to DirectX 12.
  5. Save the setting, return to the main menu, and then relaunch if prompted.

This is a controlled test for ERR_GFX_STATE, not a guarantee for every crash. DirectX 12 can change frame pacing, performance, or feature behavior; record Vulkan first so you can revert. If the game cannot stay open long enough to change the setting, reset its graphics configuration after backing up the settings files, then test again.

Check crashes that occur after several minutes

  • Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures and watch for thermal throttling.
  • Return CPU, GPU, and RAM overclocks or undervolts to stock settings.
  • Check whether VRAM or system memory is exhausted, especially on Enhanced.
  • Test RAM stability and update chipset drivers.
  • Look for display-driver resets, visual artifacts, power loss, or crashes in other demanding games.

If Windows reboots, freezes completely, or shows a blue screen, repeated reinstalls are unlikely to solve the root cause. Treat that behavior as a hardware, power, driver, or Windows-stability investigation.

Collect evidence before reinstalling

When the above steps fail, gather evidence instead of guessing. Rockstar’s standard diagnostics include the following:

  • Remove or archive mods from the game directory.
  • Record the installation location and confirm the Rockstar account linked to the Epic purchase.
  • Reboot when Epic, Rockstar, or BattlEye asks you to.

In Epic, open Library, use GTA V’s context menu, choose Uninstall, then select Install again. Allow Rockstar Launcher components and prerequisites to be installed. A reinstall replaces software; it will not cure an unstable overclock, overheating, failing storage, unsupported hardware, or a system-wide driver fault.

What not to do

  • Do not download replacement DLLs from unofficial sites.
  • Do not use registry cleaners or delete arbitrary files from System32.
  • Do not permanently disable Windows Defender or antivirus; use narrow, reversible exclusions only for testing.
  • Do not copy undocumented launch arguments from an old video.
  • Do not delete saves before backing them up.
  • Do not disable BattlEye while expecting to connect to official GTA Online servers.
  • Do not assume a Legacy fix applies to Enhanced, or that DirectX 12 is universally better.

The Bottom Line

Start with the edition and symptom, then update, verify, launch cleanly, repair runtimes, and branch into BattlEye or ERR_GFX_STATE guidance. If the whole PC crashes, investigate system stability; if software checks and logs do not identify a cause, a clean reinstall or Rockstar support ticket is justified.
