Yes—many Xbox Store games can be installed remotely to an Xbox Series X or Series S before you buy them. Use the Xbox mobile app to send the download to your console. The files install, but they do not grant permission to play: at launch you still need a digital purchase, an eligible Game Pass entitlement, a valid code, or (on Series X) the matching game disc. Microsoft documents remote installation and preloading for Xbox games, while its licensing rules distinguish installed files from the license required to run them. What “no purchase necessary” really means
No purchase is needed to begin the download—not to play the game. The Xbox app can send a downloadable Store package to a registered console even when your account has not bought that title. Once installed, the game can still show a lock, a purchase prompt, an entitlement error, or a release-date message.
Installation and ownership are separate checks. A download reaching 100 percent does not create a license, remove a publisher’s release lock, or include add-ons that were not installed. When you launch, Xbox checks for one of the following:
- a digital license on your Microsoft account;
- an eligible Game Pass entitlement that still includes the title and the correct console edition;
- a valid code or other license; or
- on Xbox Series X, the required physical disc in the drive.
That is why this method saves launch-day download time without making a paid game free.

Choose the right Xbox app and method
| Situation | Where to look | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Game is in the Xbox Store, owned or not yet purchased | General Xbox mobile app | Many listings show Download to Console, Install to Console, or a download icon. |
| Upcoming title included with Game Pass | Xbox app’s Game Pass area or Game Pass catalog | Eligible titles may show Pre-install or Pre-install to console. |
| Physical game planned for Series X | General Xbox app Store listing, if a downloadable package is offered | Install the package early, then insert the disc on launch day for the license check. |
These workflows overlap but are not identical. A Game Pass title is not automatically pre-installable, and a Store listing may expose remote installation without showing a special “preload” badge. Button names and availability can change with the app version, game edition, publisher, region, and release status. Xbox described mobile-app pre-installation in its April 16, 2025 update. Before you start
- An Xbox Series X or Series S connected to the internet.
- The console and Xbox app signed in with the Microsoft account you intend to use.
- The official Xbox app installed on iPhone, iPad, or Android.
- Remote features enabled on the console, with a power mode that keeps network access available while it is off or asleep.
- Enough free space on the internal SSD or a compatible expansion card.
- A Store listing that offers an install or pre-install control.
- Current console and app software; labels can differ after an update.
Series S is digital-only. Series X can use a disc as its ownership check, but the disc game still installs to storage and normally must remain inserted to launch. Remote installation does not bypass regional availability, age or family controls, publisher restrictions, or account restrictions. How to preload an unreleased game with the Xbox mobile app
1. Enable remote access on the console
- Open Settings on the Xbox.
- Open Devices & connections, or the current section containing remote features.
- Select Remote features and enable them.
- In the power options, choose a mode that permits network connectivity while the console is off or asleep.
Xbox changes power-setting labels periodically. If the app cannot find the console, return to this screen, update the console, and restart it before trying again.
2. Send the game from the app
- Install and open the official Xbox mobile app, then sign in with the account used on the target console.
- Tap Search and enter the game title.
- Open the correct game page and check the edition carefully. Cross-generation bundles, Xbox One versions, Series X|S versions, deluxe editions, and bundles can be separate listings.
- Tap Download to Console, Install to Console, or the equivalent download icon.
- Select the Xbox Series X or Series S that should receive the files.
- Choose the installation destination if the app asks, then confirm.
- On the console, open My games & apps > Manage > Queue to watch progress. The app may also provide a device or queue view.
If the listing has no install control, do not assume buying the game will fix it. Check the edition, app, region, and publisher’s preload availability first.

How to pre-install an eligible Game Pass title
- Open the Xbox app and enter the Game Pass catalog or upcoming-games area.
- Select the title and verify that the console edition is covered by your subscription.
- Look for Pre-install or Pre-install to console.
- Choose the target console and confirm.
- Keep the subscription active and the game in the catalog until you play.
Microsoft and the publisher decide which titles expose this control. Catalog membership, day-one access, and unlock times can vary by plan, country, edition, and date. A game can also leave Game Pass, or one platform edition can be covered while another requires a purchase. Do not treat the presence of a Game Pass listing as a promise that every upcoming release can be pre-installed.
Preparing for a physical game on Xbox Series X
- Use the Xbox app to install the downloadable Store package, if that game and edition offer one.
- On launch day, insert the matching disc into the Series X.
- Let Xbox verify the disc and install any required launch update.
- Leave the disc inserted whenever you play, unless you separately own a digital license.
The disc supplies the entitlement check; the preloaded files supply the local installation. A day-one patch or server-side unlock can still be required. Remote installation is not guaranteed for every disc release, especially when no corresponding downloadable Store package is exposed.

- Experience The World's Game in EA SPORTS FC 27. Play in The Grounds, team up with friends in Clubs, learn from football mentors and express your style on and off the pitch

Why this does not work on Series S
Series S has no disc drive. A boxed copy cannot provide its license, so you need a compatible digital purchase, redeemed code, or eligible subscription entitlement. Installing files remotely by itself is never enough.
How to verify that the preload worked
- The title appears in My games & apps > Manage > Queue and the progress advances.
- The game occupies space under My games & apps > Manage > Storage devices.
- It may appear in your library with a lock or launch restriction; that is expected without an entitlement.
- Launching it before release can show a purchase, subscription, disc, or release-date prompt.
A preload is not necessarily the final launch build. The publisher may replace the package, apply a day-one update, or keep the executable locked until a regional or server-side release time. Leave free space for updates and do not assume the game will launch the instant the initial download finishes.

Why the Install or Pre-install button is missing
| What you see | Likely reason | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No button on the game page | Preload is not enabled, or the listing is not the correct console edition | Try the Series X|S listing, the general Xbox app, and the publisher’s release information. |
| Only a cloud, PC, or Xbox One option appears | Wrong platform listing or entitlement | Open the edition details and select the package intended for Series X|S. |
| Game is unavailable | Region, age, family, delisting, or account restriction | Check the account and local Store availability. |
| Title is already installed or queued | No second install command is needed | Check the console queue and storage. |
| Console is not offered as a destination | Remote features, account, network, or power-state problem | Follow the connection checks below. |
Some titles expose a normal remote-install command rather than a feature labelled “preload.” Others appear in the Game Pass area but not with the same control in the general Store view. App behavior also changes as Xbox rolls out updates.
Fixes when the console is missing or the download fails
The console does not appear in the app
- Confirm that the phone and console use the same Microsoft account.
- Verify that remote features are enabled and the console is online.
- Check that its power mode supports network access while asleep or off.
- Force-close and reopen the Xbox app, then restart the console.
- Update the app and console software.
- Remove and re-add the console in the app if it remains undiscoverable.
The download starts and stops
- Open My games & apps > Manage > Queue and resume, or cancel and restart, the item.
- Quit any game running in the foreground.
- Check available storage and clear space if necessary.
- Restart the console and confirm the network connection.
- Reissue the install from the mobile app.
A download stuck at 0 percent can be a broader Store or console-install problem rather than proof that remote preloading is unsupported. Microsoft Q&A documents this type of Series S installation failure. Microsoft Q&A example
The game is installed but locked
That is normal until the license and release conditions are satisfied. Buy the digital version, insert the disc on Series X, confirm the correct Game Pass entitlement, wait for the official unlock time, and install any launch update. A locked icon does not mean the download failed.
Storage and download planning
- Series X|S games use internal SSD storage or an approved expansion card; check the individual Store listing for the current size.
- A compatible expansion card keeps native Series X|S games on fast storage while preserving internal space.
- A USB external drive is useful for archiving and moving games. Optimized Series X|S titles may need to move back to internal or approved expansion storage before they can run.
- Preloading consumes space before you decide to buy. Cancel a queued installation if you change your mind; deleting local files does not remove a digital license you already own.
- When bandwidth is limited, avoid queuing several large releases together and reserve room for day-one patches.
What to expect at launch
At release, Xbox performs separate checks for the local package, your license, and the publisher’s unlock state. A digital purchase or eligible subscription can authorize play; a Series X disc can do so while it is inserted. The package may still need an update, and midnight availability can differ by region, platform, edition, and publisher. Cloud streaming, where offered, is an alternative way to play but is not a preload and still requires a supported entitlement.
