Vortex can check installed mods for updates and install some of them automatically, but it is not a universal one-click updater. Nexus-linked mods are usually the easiest to update; local archives and mods without a clear update path may require you to choose and install the new file yourself.
What Vortex can update
Vortex separates finding an update from installing it. Its Mods page documentation describes updates that Vortex can download automatically and others that send you to the mod’s download page so you can select the right file.
- Automatic: Vortex recognizes the mod and update file, so you can start the download from the update control.
- Choose the file: Vortex identifies a possible update, but you must select the appropriate file on the mod page.
- Manual: You check the author’s page, download the archive, and import it into Vortex.
Automatic updating works best when the installed mod is associated with its Nexus Mods page and has usable version and file information. Installing an archive through Vortex does not by itself guarantee that Vortex can track its source or find later updates. Updating a mod is also different from updating the game or Vortex itself. Your game launcher handles game patches; Vortex manages mods. A game patch can break a script extender, framework, DLL plugin, or version-specific mod even if Vortex reports no mod updates.

How to check for updates
- Open Vortex and select the game you want to manage.
- Open Mods and click Check for Updates. The control is described in the official Mods page guide; its icon or appearance can vary by version and theme.
- Start with the optimized check. If you know a newer version exists but it is not listed, run the full check, which requests fuller mod details.
- Review the results and the mod’s version, changelog, requirements, and file choices before installing anything.
A newer date does not necessarily mean a file is the right update: a mod page can offer optional files, hotfixes, patches, legacy versions, or builds for different game editions.
Update one mod in Vortex
When Vortex can download it
- In the update results, find the mod and review its change notes and requirements.
- Use the available update or download control. If Vortex can identify the file, it can start the download directly.
- Install the downloaded archive, then confirm that the intended version is enabled in the correct game profile.
When you must select a file
- Open the mod’s page from Vortex or in your browser.
- Under Files, choose the file that matches your game edition and the mod’s instructions.
- Use Mod Manager Download if it is offered for that file, then return to Vortex to install it.
If Vortex opens a page instead of downloading, that can be expected: it may not know which of several files is appropriate. Select the file yourself rather than assuming the newest upload is a drop-in replacement.

Update a mod installed from an archive or another site
A local ZIP, RAR, or 7Z archive can be managed in Vortex, but the manager may not have the Nexus page, file ID, or update relationship needed to check it automatically. For mods from another site, follow the author’s installation and update instructions.
- Download the new archive from the mod author’s official page and check its requirements and compatibility notes.
- In Vortex, use Install From File or drag the archive into the app.
- Install the new version as Vortex presents the option. If the mod uses an installer, select the required options again.
- Check the Mods page to confirm which version is enabled and whether the old version remains active.
- Deploy the mods and test the game before deleting the previous archive.
Vortex’s UI guide documents both installing from a file and the update workflow. Whether an old installed entry remains available for rollback depends on how the update was installed, so keep the earlier archive until the new version works.

What to check after installing an update
An update is not proof that the mod is compatible with your game, profile, or other mods. Check these items before returning to a main save:
- Installer choices: FOMOD installers may ask again about texture quality, optional features, compatibility patches, or other choices. Compare the options with the previous setup and the mod’s instructions. FOMOD behavior depends on the mod, game extension, and Vortex version; an older Vortex issue documents an update-related menu problem in a 1.16.7 workflow, not a universal current defect.
- Dependencies: Check whether a framework, script extender, address library, or other prerequisite also needs an update for your game build.
- Enabled version and conflicts: Confirm the new version is enabled, the old one is not unintentionally active, and review Vortex’s file, plugin, and dependency warnings.
- Load order and deployment: Use the appropriate sorting tool for your game when needed. Click Deploy Mods if Vortex has not deployed the enabled files. Installation adds the archive to Vortex; enabling marks it for use; deployment applies managed files to the game’s mod location.
- Testing and rollback: Launch from a safe save or a test profile. If the game crashes, disable the updated mod and test again; if that resolves the problem, inspect its requirements and restore the prior archive or version if needed.

When Vortex does not find or download an update

If Vortex itself fails to update, its official FAQ says it is safe to download the newest installer from the official source and install it.

Premium offers download convenience, including uncapped downloads and one-click collections, but it does not make unsupported mods update automatically or ensure that an update is compatible. Nexus says removing its speed restriction does not guarantee a particular real-world speed; its download speed guidance also describes approximate free-user limits, which can change.

Is Vortex the right updater for your mod list?
Vortex is a practical choice if your game is supported and you want Nexus integration, a central mod list, and update checks for eligible mods. For unsupported sources, complex installers, or strict version control, expect to make more choices and preserve archives yourself.
Advanced Bethesda players who want more explicit profile and file-management control may prefer Mod Organizer 2, a community-created alternative discussed in Nexus Mods’ migration guide. Manual installation can suit a handful of unusual mods, but it gives up centralized update detection and makes cleanup and rollback harder. The best alternative depends on the game; a tool suited to Skyrim may not be right for Stardew Valley or Baldur’s Gate 3.
