There is no single DirectX fix for Need for Speed Payback. The right repair depends on whether the message indicates unsupported hardware, missing legacy files, a driver reset, damaged game files, or an unstable graphics configuration. Work through these checks in order:
- Restart Windows and install pending updates.
- Confirm your GPU supports the game’s DirectX 11 requirement.
- Install Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtime.
- Update or clean-install the graphics driver.
- Repair the game files, then clear the EA app cache if the launcher is misbehaving.
- On a laptop, force the dedicated GPU.
- Disable overclocks and overlays, then lower settings, cap FPS and enable V-Sync.
- Create a DxDiag report if the error remains.
First, identify the exact error
Record the complete message before changing anything. A missing DLL points toward runtime components; “A DirectX 11 compatible graphics card is required” points toward GPU support; DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED and DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG usually require driver, stability and load testing. Black screens and crashes during the intro or races can also result from GPU selection, damaged files or overlays. Reports on the EA forum show these errors, but user workarounds are not universal fixes.
Check whether your PC supports Payback
The current EA product listing specifies a 64-bit Windows 10-or-later system and a DirectX 11-compatible video card, with a minimum class of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti or AMD Radeon HD 7850 and 2 GB of graphics memory. Treat that as a compatibility floor, not a performance guarantee; verify the current listing for your region at EA’s Payback page. Steam lists the same DirectX 11 GPU class and requires linking the Steam and EA accounts: Steam store page.
To identify your hardware, press the Windows key, type dxdiag, open the tool and select Display. DxDiag may show DirectX 12 even though Payback requires a DirectX 11-compatible card. That is not, by itself, an error: the installed Windows runtime, the GPU’s Direct3D feature level, the driver and legacy libraries are separate requirements. Installing a newer DirectX version cannot add missing feature-level support to an unsupported GPU.

Apply the low-risk fixes first
- Restart and update Windows. Install all pending Windows updates, restart, then test the game. EA places Windows Update first in its DirectX troubleshooting guidance.
- Install the official DirectX End-User Runtime. Close the EA app and use the Microsoft installer linked from EA’s instructions. It restores legacy side-by-side libraries that some games still call; it does not replace Windows’ built-in DirectX or repair an unsupported GPU. Never download individual DLL files or “DirectX updater” tools from third-party sites.
- Update the graphics driver. In DxDiag, note the manufacturer and model, then download the driver from the official NVIDIA, AMD or Intel site. Restart after installation. If the normal update fails, use the installer’s clean-install option where offered. If crashes began immediately after a driver update, testing the previous stable driver is reasonable.

Repair the game installation
EA app
- Open Library.
- Find Need for Speed Payback.
- Select the game’s Manage icon or three-dot menu.
- Choose Repair and wait for verification and replacement to finish.
- Restart the game.

Steam
If you own the Steam version, use Steam’s built-in game-file verification for that installation, then let the EA app complete its launch and account checks. Steam verification and EA app repair are separate operations. Reinstall only if repair repeatedly fails or files remain missing; reinstalling the launcher is not a first response to a GPU error.
Clear the EA app cache when the launcher is stuck
Cache clearing is useful when the game is missing from the library, updates fail, or repair will not start. It is not a guaranteed graphics or DirectX repair and cannot resolve an EA service outage.

- In the EA app, open the three-line menu at the far left.
- Select Help, then App recovery.
- Choose Clear cache.
If the app will not open on Windows 10 or 11, open Start → All Apps → EA → App Recovery → Clear Cache. See EA’s current paths at Clear cache.
Make sure the game uses the right GPU
Hybrid-graphics laptops can start Payback on integrated graphics even when a dedicated NVIDIA or AMD GPU is installed. Use Windows graphics settings or the GPU vendor’s control panel to assign the game executable to High performance; menu names vary by Windows release and driver. Connect the laptop to AC power, launch the game and verify actual GPU use rather than assuming the setting applied. On a desktop, check that the display cable is connected to the intended discrete card. EA documents vendor-specific approaches in its graphics troubleshooting guide.

Stop crashes under graphics load
Remove instability while testing
- Return GPU and CPU clocks, undervolts and fan-control profiles to factory defaults.
- Temporarily disable NVIDIA, AMD or Intel overlays, Discord overlay, EA overlay, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner and recording or RGB utilities.
- Close unnecessary background applications. If crashes persist, use a clean boot as EA describes in its crash guide.
These are controlled diagnostic tests, not permanent requirements.
Reduce rendering demand
- Lower resolution and overall quality.
- Reduce post-processing first if the crash occurs in the intro, transitions or demanding scenes. This is a community-reported workaround, not an EA-validated universal fix.
- Cap the frame rate and enable V-Sync.
- Try borderless or windowed mode if exclusive fullscreen produces a black screen.
Lower settings can expose a stability or thermal problem, but they cannot make unsupported hardware compatible.

Create a DxDiag report if the error remains
- Press the Windows key and search for
dxdiag. - Open the application and select Run 64-bit DxDiag when available.
- Choose Save All Information to create a text report.
- Check the GPU model, driver version and date, DirectX version, display-device errors and Windows Update errors.
- Attach the report and the exact error text to an EA support case or relevant EA forum post, following EA’s DxDiag instructions.
When software cannot fix it
If the GPU is below the published minimum, lacks the required DirectX 11 feature level, overheats, or is physically failing, runtime installation and file repair will not solve the problem. Persistent errors after factory settings, current drivers, repaired files and reduced load may indicate a hardware fault or a game-specific compatibility bug. Escalate with DxDiag rather than copying DLLs, editing the registry, using unverified driver tools, permanently disabling antivirus or trying pirated/injected files. Origin-specific instructions are obsolete; EA directs Windows players to the EA app, as explained in its launcher troubleshooting guidance.
