Before replacing a world, download a copy of the current Realm: replacing a slot does not merge worlds, and Realm backups are not a permanent archive.
First check the edition. Bedrock players can upload a compatible local world through the Realm’s world slots; Java players use the Realm’s Configure and Worlds controls. A Java world cannot be uploaded directly to a Bedrock Realm, or vice versa.

Before you upload a world
- Match editions. Bedrock Realms are for Bedrock worlds and Java Realms are for Java worlds. Realms cross-play works within an edition, not between Java and Bedrock. See Minecraft Realms for edition details.
- Use an active Realm. Uploading through Realms requires an active trial or subscription. Mojang recommends updating Minecraft on both devices when transferring a Bedrock world; see its Bedrock transfer guidance.
- Test the local world first. Open it, check that it loads, then exit normally so its latest changes are saved. Make a separate local copy before uploading.
- Download the Realm world you might replace. Replacement changes the world in that slot; it does not combine it with the upload. Mojang advises downloading the current world first and warns that backups may not be retained indefinitely. See Change Your Realm World.
- Plan for players to pause. Ask invited players to leave while the replacement is underway so nobody makes progress in the world being changed.
- Check the content and size. Bedrock uploads have a stated 4 GB maximum. World data can include more than terrain, such as player data, structures, maps, add-ons and pack data. This limit is specific to Bedrock uploads, not Java Realms. See Mojang’s Bedrock upload guide.
The Realm owner, or an account with the necessary Realm-management access, should do the upload. An invited member can play but should not assume they can replace a world.
Add a custom world to a Bedrock Realm
These steps apply to Bedrock Edition on supported platforms, including Windows, mobile, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and Chromebook. Menu wording can vary slightly between platforms and game updates. The key distinction is that an empty slot uses Upload World, while an occupied slot uses Replace World.

Upload to an empty slot
- Launch Minecraft and select Play.
- Open the Realms tab and enter the Realm’s Realms Hub.
- Open Worlds, then Slots, and select an empty slot.
- Select Create World. At the bottom of Game Settings, choose Upload World.
- Select the local world and wait for upload and any conversion to finish.
- If needed, activate that slot so it becomes the world players enter.
Bedrock Realms can store up to three worlds, but only one is active and playable at a time. The upload path and limit are documented in Mojang’s upload instructions; slot information is on the Realms page.
Replace a world in an occupied slot
- Open Play → Realms → the Realm’s Realms Hub.
- Select Worlds → Slots, then choose the occupied slot.
- Choose Edit World, scroll to the bottom of Game Settings, and select Replace World.
- Choose the local world and confirm the replacement.
- Wait for the upload to finish. Enter the Realm yourself and check the result before inviting players back in.
Replacing a slot overwrites that slot’s world; it does not bring its builds or player progress into the uploaded save. Download the existing world before starting. For a separate copy, use the Realm slot’s download controls; Mojang’s Bedrock download guide covers downloading a Realm world.
Add a custom world to a Java Realm
For Java Edition on Windows, macOS or Linux, use the Realm’s configuration screen. The stable landmarks are Minecraft Realms → select the Realm → Configure → Worlds; exact button labels can change with the interface. Mojang documents the management controls in Manage Settings for a Java Realm.
- Launch Minecraft: Java Edition and select Minecraft Realms.
- Select the Realm, then choose Configure.
- Open Worlds and select the slot you intend to change.
- Use the reset or replace control for that slot, then choose the option to upload a world.
- Select the local Java world and confirm. If the file picker asks for a folder, choose the world folder itself—not an unrelated parent folder or a compressed archive.
- Wait for the upload to complete, enter the Realm, and check the spawn point, inventories, builds, advancements and player access.
A typical Java world folder contains level.dat, a region folder and often playerdata, DIM-1 or DIM1; contents vary. Back up the world before opening it in another version. A world saved in a newer Minecraft version may not work in an older one, and downgrading can damage or remove version-specific data. Test datapacks and command systems in the version used by the Realm.

What kinds of custom worlds can you use?
Worlds you made or downloaded maps
A local world you created or a downloaded map is usually the straightforward case if it is for the same edition, compatible with the current game version and appears in the local Worlds list. Import the file into Minecraft first, open it locally to test it, then upload it. A map’s successful upload does not guarantee that every external pack or tool used to create it will work on the Realm.
Marketplace worlds and templates
On Bedrock, you can create a local world from a Marketplace template or other supported content and then upload that world. Marketplace access is a Bedrock content route, not a way to convert a world to Java; Java Realms do not support the Bedrock Marketplace. See the official Realms information.
Bedrock add-ons
Add-on behavior depends on the add-on, game version and how its resource and behavior packs are associated with the world. Before inviting friends, check that the packs are enabled, present and compatible with the current Bedrock version, and that players can use or download any required content. Do not assume every third-party add-on will work on Realms; some world settings or content can also affect achievements.
Java datapacks, mods and plugins
A vanilla-compatible Java map may upload even if the setup used to make it cannot run on Realms. A standard Java Realm is not a general-purpose host for Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, custom server jars, or server-side plugins. Datapacks and command-driven maps should be tested after upload, especially functions, scheduled commands, scoreboards, loot tables, advancements, structures, resource-pack dependencies and command-block behavior.

Back up the Realm and recover from a bad upload
For Bedrock, open the Realm’s Worlds → Slots, select the current world and use its download control. Verify that the copy appears in the local Worlds list. If an upload goes wrong, Bedrock Realm backups may allow you to restore an earlier automatic or manual save; see Mojang’s restore instructions.
For Java, use the Realm’s download or backup controls before replacing the world. The Java management page covers backups and downloading or restoring a world: Manage Settings for a Java Realm.
If the new world is wrong or important progress is missing, stop playing in it, leave the Realm, and download or restore the previous world before trying again. Check that you chose the intended slot and the correct local save. A backup can help, but Mojang cautions that Realm backups are not retained indefinitely, so keep an independent copy of worlds that matter.

The upload or replace option is missing
- Confirm you opened Realm management rather than the local-world menu.
- On Bedrock, check Realms Hub → Worlds → Slots; on Java, check Minecraft Realms → Configure → Worlds.
- Make sure you have the required Realm-management access, the correct edition and an active trial or subscription.
- Check whether the selected slot is empty or occupied: the upload and replacement controls differ.
The world does not appear in the picker
- Import it into the device’s Minecraft installation first and open it locally.
- Confirm it belongs to the same edition as the Realm.
- If using Java, select the actual world folder; do not leave the map compressed if Minecraft expects an imported world.
- Keep the original file untouched. If the world still does not appear, re-import it or test with a known-good save.
The upload fails or stalls
- For Bedrock, check whether the world exceeds the documented 4 GB upload maximum.
- Restart Minecraft and install the latest available game update.
- Check that the device has free storage and the connection is stable.
- Open the world offline to check for corruption, then try a separate copy or another slot.
- Do not repeatedly replace the live world without a backup.
If a world exceeds the Bedrock limit, reduce its size only with a method suitable for your platform and world; removing chunks is not guaranteed to solve every oversized upload.

The world loads but players spawn or appear incorrectly
Test the Realm as the owner before everyone rejoins. Check world spawn, individual player locations and inventories, gamerules, permissions, command blocks and any packs or datapacks the map needs. A world’s saved player data and settings come from the uploaded save, not from a merge with the former Realm world.
The previous Realm world seems missing
Check whether it is still stored in another slot, whether you downloaded a local copy, and whether a Realm backup is available. Do not assume a backup will remain available indefinitely; download important worlds for long-term safekeeping.
When Realms is not the right host
Realms is a practical choice for a private, always-online world when the group uses one edition and wants official hosting without managing server software. Invited friends can play without buying their own Realm subscription, and Realms offers world management and backups; see Minecraft’s Realms page.
Consider a dedicated server instead if the world requires a mod loader, plugins, custom server software, full file access, advanced configuration or a world that exceeds Bedrock’s upload limit. A self-hosted or third-party server gives more control but also means more setup, maintenance, backup responsibility and potentially separate hosting costs. For occasional play, local multiplayer avoids a Realm subscription, but the host device and network must be available.
