The remark is genuine, as is Microsoft’s February 20 appointment of Sharma. But the idea that Xbox is being shut down is Blackley’s interpretation—not an announced Microsoft plan. Microsoft’s official message says the opposite: a “return of Xbox,” renewed commitment to console, and expansion across PC, mobile and cloud.
What Blackley actually said
Blackley used the phrase in an interview with GamesBeat, published February 23 and updated February 27, 2026. His complete characterization was that Sharma would be “a palliative care doctor who slides Xbox gently into the night.” He also described Xbox as being “sunsetted,” while acknowledging that Microsoft does not use that language for its strategy.
Blackley is not a current Microsoft executive or spokesperson. He is a prominent critic whose comments carry unusual symbolic weight because he was among the people who pushed Microsoft to create the original Xbox, alongside figures including Ed Fries, Otto Berkes, Ted Hase, Nate Brown and Kevin Bachus.

What “palliative care doctor” means
Palliative care manages symptoms and quality of life when the priority is no longer a cure. In Blackley’s metaphor, Sharma is being cast as a leader who will manage a declining or changing Xbox business instead of restoring the console platform to its former central position.
That is deliberately provocative commentary. It does not establish that Microsoft has ordered the end of Xbox hardware, that Sharma was hired to close the division, or that a shutdown has been approved.
Who Asha Sharma is and what changed
Microsoft appointed Sharma Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft Gaming on February 20, 2026, replacing Phil Spencer. The company’s announcement is available at Microsoft’s official blog.

Microsoft said Microsoft Gaming covered nearly 40 studios across Xbox, Bethesda, Activision Blizzard and King. GamesBeat’s account notes that Spencer had overseen Game Pass, cloud gaming, cross-platform initiatives, the Xbox Series X|S era and Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard acquisition.

Before Microsoft, Sharma was chief operating officer at Instacart and a vice president at Meta. At Microsoft she had been associated with Core AI. The company presented her experience as scaling consumer services, platforms, business models and global operations rather than as a conventional game-development or publishing career.
Microsoft’s announcement page later added that, as of April 23, 2026, the organization was known as XBOX and Sharma’s title was CEO XBOX. That is a later naming update, not a different appointment.
Why Blackley sees the appointment as a warning
Blackley’s argument is about corporate priorities as much as Sharma’s résumé.
- He believes Microsoft is making an enormous generative-AI bet and applying an AI-centered framework to businesses outside core AI.
- He sees games as a creator-led entertainment business whose problems cannot be reduced to software, compute or data.
- Sharma’s background in AI, platforms and consumer services therefore looks to him like a signal that Xbox will be operated primarily as an AI-enabled platform or service.
- In that reading, Microsoft’s most valuable assets—Game Pass, cloud, PC, mobile and major publishers—can be preserved while the traditional console becomes less important.
Those are Blackley’s views, reported in the GamesBeat interview. They are not evidence of an internal decision to eliminate Xbox consoles.

What Microsoft says Sharma is supposed to do
Microsoft’s official statement offers a direct counterpoint. Sharma said her first responsibility was to understand what makes the gaming business work and protect it. She listed these commitments:
- Great games: continued investment in iconic franchises and bold new ideas.
- The return of Xbox: a renewed commitment beginning with console.
- More ways to play: expansion across console, PC, mobile and cloud.
- Human-created games: AI may influence future monetization and play, but games should remain human-made art rather than “soulless AI slop.”
- The original spirit of Xbox: a return to the “renegade spirit” that built the brand.
These statements are promises about intent, not proof that the strategy will succeed. They nevertheless contradict the claim that Microsoft has announced a quiet euthanasia of Xbox.

Blackley’s managed-decline reading
On Blackley’s interpretation, Microsoft is preserving Xbox’s software, services and intellectual property while gradually reducing the importance of its own hardware. A console that is no longer the primary destination for Xbox games could become a transition product rather than the center of the business.
Microsoft’s ecosystem-expansion reading
Microsoft says the same reach can strengthen Xbox. Console remains part of the plan, while PC, mobile and cloud let more people play and give Microsoft additional ways to grow its games business.

The unresolved question is whether “Xbox everywhere” reinforces the console brand or weakens the reason to own an Xbox. More platforms can increase audience and software revenue; they can also reduce hardware differentiation. Future console launches, game releases, subscription decisions and studio investments—not this leadership announcement alone—will determine which reading proves more accurate.
Is Microsoft abandoning Xbox consoles?
Not according to the evidence currently available. Microsoft’s official announcement explicitly describes a renewed commitment to Xbox “starting with console,” while also promising broader access through PC, mobile and cloud: Microsoft’s announcement.
The defensible description is that Microsoft is trying to keep Xbox as a console brand while making the wider Xbox ecosystem available on more devices. Blackley fears that this approach will eventually make the console less central. Microsoft says it will make gaming larger. Neither the metaphor nor the corporate promise settles that business question.
What Blackley advised Sharma
Blackley did not present only a doomsday forecast. He advised Sharma to leave if she cannot develop a genuine passion for games, and to build trust by speaking with experienced industry leaders, including people from Nintendo and other major gaming companies. His advice shows that his criticism is also a challenge to demonstrate understanding of game development and the culture that created Xbox.

Blackley’s statement is best understood as a warning from an Xbox founder about Microsoft’s priorities, not as a corporate announcement. Microsoft says Xbox is entering a growth phase and remains committed to console. The meaningful test will be whether its future products, games, hardware and business decisions match that promise.
