NVIDIA Launches Native GeForce NOW App on Linux—But It’s Still in Beta

NVIDIA’s official GeForce NOW Linux client brings a native desktop app to Linux PCs, but it remains in beta and officially targets Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and later.

Yes: NVIDIA released an official GeForce NOW app for Linux PCs on January 29, 2026. It is a beta, with NVIDIA’s documented Linux target starting at Ubuntu 24.04 LTS—not a promise of support for every distribution. The app streams games from NVIDIA’s servers; “native” describes the Linux client, not where the games run.

What NVIDIA launched

The Linux client entered beta on January 29, 2026. NVIDIA presents it as a desktop app for Linux PCs, and its download page is the official place to get it. Launch coverage identifies the package as a Flatpak build. NVIDIA lists Steam Deck separately, so this is a broader Linux-PC client announcement, not simply a new name for the handheld’s existing access path. See NVIDIA’s launch announcement, its CES announcement, and the GeForce NOW download page.

Native means an official desktop client rather than a browser tab or an unofficial wrapper. The games still run on GeForce NOW’s cloud computers and stream to your Linux machine. Locally, your PC runs the app, decodes the video, and sends your controls.

What Linux systems NVIDIA supports

NVIDIA’s stated Linux target is Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and later. That wording should not be read as formal support for every Ubuntu-based distribution or every Linux desktop. Fedora, Mint, Pop!_OS, Debian, Arch, and other systems may be able to run a Flatpak, but technical possibility is not the same as NVIDIA-supported compatibility.

Hardware and graphics requirements

  • A dual-core x86/x64 processor running at 2.0 GHz or faster and at least 4 GB of system memory.
  • A modern GPU with Vulkan video-codec support for H.264 or H.265.
  • For NVIDIA GPUs, driver version 580.126.07 or newer. For Intel or AMD systems using Mesa, NVIDIA recommends Mesa 24.2.8.
  • NVIDIA recommends Xorg/X11 with NVIDIA GPUs and Wayland with AMD or Intel GPUs.

These are NVIDIA’s published requirements and recommendations; consult its Linux system-requirements page for current details. The network matters too: NVIDIA recommends less than 80 ms latency to a data center. Its published minimum bandwidth figures range from 15 Mbps for HD/60 fps to 65 Mbps for 5K/120 fps; the higher modes need substantially more bandwidth.

How to install the Linux app

  1. Open NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW download page and choose Linux (BETA).
  2. Download the package offered there and install it through your distribution’s software manager or Flatpak tooling. Follow the current page’s instructions rather than relying on an old command or package link.
  3. Launch GeForce NOW from your application menu and sign in. The Linux app hands authentication to a web browser.
  4. Connect the supported game-store accounts relevant to your library, choose a catalog game, and open the in-stream settings to select the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and other options available to your plan and setup.

If launch or sign-in fails

If the app does not start, check the Ubuntu version, graphics driver or Mesa release, Vulkan video support, and the recommended display server. NVIDIA also says to reinstall the GeForce NOW app after installing a new NVIDIA host driver. Its Linux launch troubleshooting guide covers app-start problems.

If clicking GET IN appears to do nothing, confirm that a default browser is configured, allow the browser handoff, and try again. NVIDIA documents this issue in its Linux login troubleshooting guide.

What resolution and frame rate can you get?

NVIDIA advertises streaming up to 5K at 120 fps or 1080p at 360 fps on Linux. Those are ceilings, not the default experience. NVIDIA says premium membership is required for high-end modes such as 5K/4K and ultrawide streaming, RTX features, and 120/240/360-fps streaming in the Linux app. The option you can use also depends on your GPU, display, game, connection, server availability, and plan.

NVIDIA’s published bandwidth requirements illustrate the network side: 35 Mbps for QHD/120, 45 Mbps for 4K/120, 55 Mbps for QHD/FHD at 240 or 360 fps, and 65 Mbps for 5K/120. A high-refresh stream is useful only if the display can show the extra frames. A missing resolution or frame-rate setting may reflect the plan, display, title, connection, region, or beta feature limits rather than a faulty installation.

The dedicated app gives Linux users access to client capabilities beyond the browser experience, whose limits can depend on browser codec support, input handling, and browser-specific streaming modes. It does not guarantee lower latency: Wi-Fi quality, routing, distance to NVIDIA’s servers, and display behavior still matter. Browser access remains an option on unsupported distributions or machines where the beta app does not work.

Which games are available?

GeForce NOW is not a universal PC game library. You need a game supported in the service’s current catalog and, in most cases, access to it through a connected PC storefront such as Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, or Ubisoft Connect. Free-to-play games are also available, and NVIDIA describes Install-to-Play as expanding the catalog for premium members. Availability varies by title and region; check NVIDIA’s membership information and catalog and membership details rather than assuming that every game in a connected store works.

The Linux app does not make Windows games run locally on Linux. The cloud service runs the game on its infrastructure and streams the result, so local Linux compatibility is not the same issue as it is with a locally installed game.

Free Price not stated in the cited pricing materials. Try the service and check whether your device and network work for your needs.
Performance $9.99 per month or $49.99 for six months, in NVIDIA’s latest indexed pricing signal. A lower-cost premium option; not the tier to choose specifically for the Linux app’s highest-resolution and highest-frame-rate modes.
Ultimate $19.99 per month or $99.99 for six months, in NVIDIA’s official pricing materials. For users seeking the highest-end cloud hardware and premium streaming modes, provided their display, connection, and games can take advantage of them.
Day Pass Price not stated here; NVIDIA advertises 24-hour access and shows the current price at checkout. A short-term way to evaluate the service before committing to a recurring plan.

See NVIDIA’s membership page, its Blackwell pricing announcement, and the membership FAQ. The key buying distinction is that installing the Linux client does not require buying Ultimate, but the headline premium modes do require a qualifying membership.

Should you use the native app or another route?

Choose the Linux app if

  • You run Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or later and meet NVIDIA’s graphics requirements.
  • You want an official desktop client and streaming modes beyond what your browser offers.
  • You have a reliable, low-latency connection and are comfortable using beta software.

Use the browser if

  • Your distribution is outside NVIDIA’s documented Linux target.
  • You want to try the service without installing the app, or the native client does not work on your system.
  • Your browser and device offer the resolution and frame rate you need.

NVIDIA continues to list browser access alongside the Linux download options. It is a practical fallback, though browser-specific codec, input, and streaming-mode limits may apply. Community reports that a Flatpak works on another distribution are useful clues, not an NVIDIA support guarantee.

Keep the Steam Deck path distinct

NVIDIA lists Steam Deck separately from the Linux PC app. Deck owners should use the device-specific guidance on NVIDIA’s download page; the January 2026 beta is notable because it brings an official client aimed at Linux PCs more broadly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider local Linux gaming instead

Steam with Proton, native Linux games, and launchers such as Heroic can avoid streaming latency and a cloud membership, but they require local hardware and do not make every Windows game compatible. The native GeForce NOW app is a way to stream supported games, not a replacement for installing Linux games.

Who should wait?

The beta is a poor fit if you need every distribution formally supported, depend on unverified HDR or peripheral behavior, have an older GPU without the required Vulkan video decoding, or face unstable Wi-Fi, high latency, data caps, or limited service availability. It also will not help with games missing from the GeForce NOW catalog or titles you cannot access through a supported entitlement.
