On July 15, 2025, Microsoft began testing “Stream your own game” in the Xbox app for Windows PCs, letting Xbox Insiders in the PC Gaming Preview stream supported Xbox games they owned instead of installing them locally. At launch, the preview required Game Pass Ultimate and offered more than 250 eligible titles, according to Thurrott’s July 15, 2025 report. The feature has since expanded: Microsoft said on February 25, 2026, that the catalog exceeded 1,000 games and named Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and Essential as eligible tiers.
What “Stream your own game” does
The feature lets Microsoft run an eligible game in the cloud and stream the session to a supported device. You need an Xbox license the service recognizes, but you do not need to download that game to the PC to play it. The key word is “eligible”: it is a curated Xbox catalog, not a cloud host for every game in your library.
- Stream your own game: Microsoft’s cloud runs a supported game associated with your Xbox account.
- Local PC play: Your PC runs an installed game itself.
- Xbox Remote Play: Your own Xbox console runs the game and streams it to another device; this is separate from Microsoft’s cloud catalog.
- Game Pass catalog streaming: This lets subscribers stream eligible Game Pass titles; the owned-game feature is specifically for eligible titles the player owns.
The distinction opened a route to play some console-only Xbox games on a Windows PC without owning an Xbox console. It did not make every console game available on PC.
Who could use the PC preview at launch
The July 2025 rollout was a test, not general availability. Thurrott reported that participants needed to meet all of these launch-era conditions:

- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Be enrolled in the Xbox Insider Program and the PC Gaming Preview.
- Use the updated Xbox app for Windows PC.
- Have an active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription.
- Own a game included in the supported Stream your own game catalog.
Those are the requirements reported for the original preview. They should not be confused with Microsoft’s later subscriber-tier statement.
How the launch-era PC workflow worked
The reported preview path was:
- Open the Xbox app on your Windows PC.
- Go to Cloud Gaming.
- Find the Stream your own game catalog.
- Select a supported game associated with your account and start streaming.
That is the menu path described at launch, not a guarantee that the current app uses the same labels or placement.

What counts as an owned, supported game
A purchase alone does not guarantee that a title can be streamed. The game must be in Microsoft’s supported catalog, tied to the Microsoft/Xbox account signed into the app, and available for cloud streaming on the user’s device and in their region. Licensing and publisher restrictions can also affect availability.
In particular, owning a PC copy through Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, or another storefront does not automatically make that copy streamable through Xbox’s feature. The launch report described more than 250 supported titles, not unrestricted access to a player’s PC library. Check Microsoft’s current catalog and availability for the title and region before relying on it.

What changed by February 2026
Microsoft’s February 25, 2026 Xbox update said the Stream your own game collection had grown to more than 1,000 games. That update named Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and Essential subscribers as able to stream games they own across supported devices. This is a later service description; Ultimate alone was the subscription named in the July 2025 preview report.
Microsoft listed recent additions including Gears of War, High on Life 2, Mordhau, Pummel Party, Reanimal, Ride 6, and Starsand Island. It also identified Ghostrunner 2, Slay the Princess – The Pristine Cut, and SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake as coming soon at the time of that update. Catalog membership and regional availability can change, so these examples are not a guarantee that a title is streamable for every player now.

If an owned game does not appear
Start with eligibility rather than reinstalling the game: cloud play does not depend on a local installation. Check the likely causes in this order:
- Confirm that the Xbox app is signed into the Microsoft account that owns the eligible Xbox license.
- Check whether the title is in the current Stream your own game catalog; a PC storefront purchase by itself may not qualify.
- Confirm that the title and service are available in your region and on your device, and that your subscription tier qualifies.
- Update or restart the Xbox app. If the entitlement still looks wrong, sign out and back in to refresh the account session.
- If available to you, try the supported Xbox Cloud Gaming web experience. If the game works there but not in the app, the issue may be specific to the app; if not, check catalog, account, region, and service eligibility.
Even when a game is eligible, streaming quality depends on connection stability, latency, Wi-Fi congestion, server availability, device and browser or app support, and controller compatibility. Microsoft’s February 2026 update discussed up-to-1440p streaming on selected Xbox consoles for Ultimate members; that console-specific statement is not a resolution or performance promise for PC streams.

Why the feature matters to PC players
For a supported title, cloud streaming can avoid a large download, an installation wait, and using local storage. It can also let a player access some console-only games on a PC without purchasing an Xbox console. The trade-off is that play depends on a supported title, qualifying account and subscription, regional service availability, and a sufficiently responsive connection.
Microsoft’s later description places owned-game streaming across supported devices, but “supported” does not mean every device or country. Check current Xbox service and catalog information for your location and hardware rather than assuming the launch-era PC path or a particular device list still applies.
