Microsoft began testing “Stream your own game” on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles on December 11, 2024. The preview was limited to Xbox Insiders in the Alpha Skip-Ahead or Alpha ring with Game Pass Ultimate, and it covered selected owned games—not every title in a player’s library. The test let the game run on Microsoft’s cloud servers rather than requiring a local installation. Microsoft’s announcement
What “Stream your own game” does
The feature uses Xbox Cloud Gaming to run an eligible game on Microsoft’s servers. Your console receives the video stream and sends controller input back to the cloud session. That can save the time and storage needed to download a full game, but it still depends on an internet connection and an eligible cloud-playable title.
- Cloud streaming: The game runs on Microsoft’s cloud hardware.
- Remote Play: The game runs on your own Xbox and is streamed to another device.
- Local play: The game is installed and runs on the console.
The December 2024 announcement concerned cloud streaming, not Remote Play. It was a console Insider preview, not a public launch for every Xbox owner.
Who could use the original console preview?
At launch, participation required all of the following:

- An active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription.
- An Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console.
- Access from one of the 28 countries where Xbox Cloud Gaming Beta was available at that time.
These are the terms of the December 2024 preview, not a confirmed statement of every current console access rule. Microsoft’s current Xbox Cloud Gaming page describes streaming selected games you buy; availability and requirements can depend on title, device, account and region.
How to start a cloud stream on console
- Open My games & apps.
- Select Full library, then Owned Games.
- Find a game marked with a cloud badge. You can also choose Filter → Ready to play → Cloud gaming.
- Select the eligible game and choose Play with Cloud Gaming.
If the option is available, the game starts as a cloud session rather than showing an installation prompt. Microsoft said direct launching from the Store app was planned for a future update; the December 2024 instructions used the library path above. See the original Xbox Wire instructions.

Which owned games can be streamed?
Ownership alone does not make a game streamable. Microsoft must include that specific title in its owned-game cloud catalog, and availability may also depend on edition, platform, region and account. The catalog changes over time.
Contemporary coverage put the initial selection at approximately 50 games. Examples reported around the preview included Baldur’s Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Dying Light 2, Final Fantasy XIV Online, Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat 1, NBA 2K25, Star Wars Outlaws, The Witcher 3 and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. That is a historical sample, not a guarantee that each title is available to stream now. Thurrott’s coverage of the launch selection

How the feature changed after the preview
The console test began as a narrow Insider feature, while Microsoft later reported much broader growth in the owned-game cloud catalog across supported devices. Those milestones do not, by themselves, establish that the original console ring restrictions were lifted for every user.
| Date | What Microsoft reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| December 11, 2024 | Console preview for Alpha Skip-Ahead and Alpha Insiders with Game Pass Ultimate on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; the original supported-country context was 28 countries. | A limited console test, not a general public release. |
| March 26, 2025 | More than 50 owned cloud-playable games on supported devices. | A dated catalog figure; it does not specify universal console access. Xbox Wire update |
| August 28, 2025 | More than 450 owned games available to stream across supported devices for Game Pass Ultimate members. | A broader service milestone, not proof that every device or console account has identical access. Xbox Wire update |
The latest official service framing identified here is that users can buy and stream selected games. Check the live Xbox Cloud Gaming listing and your console library for current title and account availability rather than relying on an old launch list.

Streaming or installing: which is the better choice?
| Consideration | Cloud stream | Local installation |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | Avoids downloading the full game before play; a session still needs to connect and load. | Requires installation and any needed updates before play. |
| Console storage | Avoids the full game installation, though the console still uses some space for system, session and possibly save data. | Uses space for the installed game and updates. |
| Internet | Requires a reliable connection throughout play; congestion or instability can interrupt the session. | After installation, many games can run without a continuous connection, though online features may still need one. |
| Latency and image | Input delay and image quality can vary with network conditions and service availability. | Usually offers more consistent local responsiveness and rendering, subject to the console and game. |
| Offline access | Not available without a working cloud connection. | Can be preferable when offline access is needed, subject to the game’s own requirements. |
| Entitlement and catalog | For the original console preview, Game Pass Ultimate was required, and the game had to be in the supported owned-game catalog. | Requires the game license and enough storage; cloud-catalog eligibility is not needed. |
Streaming is most useful when storage is tight or you want to start without waiting for a large download and already meet the applicable subscription and title requirements. Installing is the safer choice for unreliable or capped internet, offline play, or latency-sensitive games. If you want to play a game installed on your own Xbox from another room or device, Remote Play is the relevant alternative—not “Stream your own game.”

An owned game without a cloud badge is not necessarily a console fault. It may not be in the supported catalog, the owned edition may not qualify, or access may differ by region, device or account. Catalog availability can also change. For a missing option, check these items in order:

- Tri-mode Connectivity: Wired for Xbox, 2.4G & Wired for PC, and Bluetooth for Android. The G7 Pro supports seamless connectivity across Xbox, PC, and Android. Effortlessly switch between modes using the convenient physical mode switch.
- TMR Sticks: The G7 Pro features GameSir's Mag-Res TMR sticks, combining Hall Effect durability with traditional potentiometer performance. This advanced technology delivers stable polling rates for smooth, drift-free gaming with low power consumption.
- Hall Effect Analog Triggers: The GameSir precision-tuned Hall Effect analog triggers provide unmatched smoothness and linear input for precise control. Featuring clicky Micro Switch trigger stops, gamers can easily switch based on their preferences.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate on PC: Experience ultra-responsive gaming with a 1000Hz polling rate on PC, available through both wired and 2.4G wireless connections. This ensures instantaneous input registration, reducing lag and optimizing your performance for the most competitive gameplay.
- GameSir Nexus App: The G7 Pro is compatible with the upgraded GameSir Nexus app, which brings a significant upgrade over the original. It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
- Make sure the console is signed in to the account that owns the game.
- For the original preview, verify that Game Pass Ultimate is active.
- Check the game’s current listing on Xbox Cloud Gaming for its streaming availability.
- If you are using the historical console preview, confirm the console is enrolled in the Alpha or Alpha Skip-Ahead ring.
- Update the console software and restart it, then revisit Owned Games and the cloud-gaming filter.
- If a title that should be available remains missing or fails to launch, use Xbox Insider support channels to report it.
An Install button without Play with Cloud Gaming usually indicates that the game can be installed but is not currently enabled for streaming on that account, region, edition or platform. Reinstalling is not a general fix for missing cloud eligibility.
When a stream stutters or responds slowly
Download speed alone does not determine stream quality. Latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, household network use and service conditions can all affect responsiveness. Try a wired Ethernet connection first if practical, then reduce competing downloads, uploads and video streams on the network. If problems continue, check Xbox’s current network and cloud-gaming support guidance; the diagnostic labels and console menus can change with software updates.
Game ownership, subscription and saves
“Stream your own game” refers to streaming a title for which you have a qualifying ownership entitlement; it is not simply another name for streaming any game included in Game Pass. A game may be available through a subscription catalog while a different title requires purchase, and neither circumstance guarantees that it is in the owned-game streaming catalog. For the original console preview, buying the game did not replace the stated Game Pass Ultimate requirement.
Cloud play uses your Xbox account, but save behavior can vary by game and platform. Check the individual title’s support details if moving between devices or if a save does not appear as expected; cross-device synchronization should not be assumed to work identically for every game.
