It ran from December 18, 2025, through January 5, 2026, and Valve described it as offering discounts “by the thousands.” Reports from the sale identified discounts as deep as 95 percent on some titles, but that was an observed maximum—not a typical store-wide discount or a blanket Valve guarantee. The next announced Winter Sale runs from December 17, 2026, through January 4, 2027.
Is the Steam Winter Sale live?
No. The 2025 event ended on January 5, 2026. Valve’s official announcement also promoted the 2025 Steam Awards, Discovery Queue stickers and new Steam Points Shop items; those extras did not reduce game prices. See Valve’s announcement at Steam News.

Valve schedules four Steam-wide seasonal sales each year, although future dates can change. Its schedule also lists the 2026 Autumn Sale for October 1–8.
What “up to 95 percent off” really means
“Up to” identifies the single deepest discount available on at least one eligible product. It does not mean that most games are 95 percent cheaper, or that the average discount approaches 95 percent. The 95-percent figure was reported by community observers during the 2025 event; Valve’s primary announcement confirmed thousands of discounts without stating a maximum. Which products reach the ceiling?
- Older games and legacy editions are the most likely to receive 90–95 percent reductions.
- Smaller releases and selected bundles can also be discounted very heavily.
- Newer premium games commonly receive more modest reductions, such as 10–40 percent, when their publishers participate.
A large percentage can still be poor value if a game is abandoned, technically broken, badly reviewed by recent players, incompatible with your hardware, dependent on an unwanted launcher or DLC, or attached to a shrinking multiplayer population.
How to find worthwhile deals
- Open Steam and enter the seasonal-sale page while the event is live.
- Sign in. Steam can then show wishlist information and recommendations connected to your library.
- Check your wishlist first; a discount on a game you already intended to play is usually more useful than a random headline bargain.
- Filter or sort by discount percentage, price, review rating, genre and tags. If you use a Steam Deck, include its compatibility status in your decision.
- Open each game’s store page before buying. Confirm the regional price and currency, edition, recent reviews, last update date, system requirements, third-party launcher or DRM, multiplayer requirements and available DLC.
- Compare the current price with historical lows using SteamDB. Distinguish the current percentage discount from the lowest price the same edition has previously reached.
- Buy only when you expect to start the game soon. A low price is not a saving if it remains unplayed in your backlog.
Steam’s sale layout, labels and featured sections can vary by region, language, account and client version. Featured placement is merchandising, not an endorsement.

How to judge whether a discount is genuine value
Look beyond the percentage
Compare the actual amount saved and the final price. A 95-percent cut on a very cheap game may save less than a respected game discounted 50 percent. Also check whether the list price is a realistic reference point and whether the current price is close to the title’s historical low.
Read recent reviews, not only the lifetime score
A high all-time rating can conceal current problems. Recent reviews may reveal broken updates, missing servers, abandoned support, intrusive DRM or compatibility changes.

Check the edition and DLC
A base game reduced by 90 percent may not include expansions needed for the intended experience. Compare the standard, deluxe and complete editions, and examine the cost of buying missing DLC separately. Steam bundle pricing can account for content you already own, but the result depends on the bundle type, region and account.
Match the game to your hardware
For PC, compare the listed CPU, GPU, memory and storage requirements with your system. Steam Deck compatibility is separate from ordinary PC compatibility: check the current Steam designation and recent player reports. “Verified” is not a promise of perfect performance after every game or SteamOS update.

Consider multiplayer longevity
For online games, investigate current player activity, matchmaking in your region and server requirements. A spectacular discount cannot restore a community that has largely moved on.

Steam prices, currencies, taxes, regional pricing and availability differ by country. Any price example must be tied to a currency, region, edition and observation date; a U.S.-dollar price cannot be treated as universal. Publishers can also add, remove or alter individual offers during an event. Do not assume that every title follows identical timing or that an unverified flash-deal pattern applies to the whole sale.

Who can participate in a seasonal sale?
Valve’s seasonal-sale documentation says released Steam games can participate when they meet the applicable release and pricing cooldown rules. Participating games discounted by 20 percent or more can trigger automatic wishlist email notifications under Steamworks’ developer rules. Details are documented at Steamworks seasonal sales.
Extras from the 2025 event
- Discovery Queue activity awarded three stickers.
- New Winter Sale items appeared in the Steam Points Shop.
- Players could vote in the 2025 Steam Awards.
These were profile, discovery or promotional features, not additional reductions in game prices.
Buying safely when the event returns
Steam’s refund rules can change and include conditions for play time, purchase age, downloadable content, gifts, bundles and preorders. Check the current Steam Support wording at the time of purchase rather than relying on an old summary. Keep the sale end date visible: January 4, 2027 for the announced 2026 event. A seasonal deadline creates urgency, but many games return in later sales, so a wishlist and price-history check are safer than an impulse purchase.
What to expect from the 2026 Winter Sale
The announced window is December 17, 2026, through January 4, 2027. The exact participating catalog, prices, discount depths, featured sections and regional offers will only be known when publishers submit eligible titles and the live store page opens. Start with your wishlist, then evaluate each candidate using its recent reviews, historical price, edition contents, hardware compatibility and likelihood that you will actually play it.
