AMD formally unveiled its RDNA 4 graphics architecture and the first desktop Radeon RX 9000 cards—the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070—on February 28, 2025. The cards were slated to reach retail through board partners on March 6, with U.S. launch prices of $599 and $549, respectively. Their pitch was strong 1440p and practical 4K gaming, improved ray tracing, and ML-powered FSR 4—not a new ultra-expensive flagship tier.

What AMD announced—and when

RDNA 4 is the GPU architecture; Radeon RX 9000 is the product family; and the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 were the first desktop graphics cards announced under that family. FSR 4 is a software upscaling feature designed to use RDNA 4’s AI hardware, not a graphics card. AMD’s February announcement did not introduce every model that would later join the RX 9000 family.

AMD set U.S. suggested e-tail prices (SEP) at $599 for the RX 9070 XT and $549 for the RX 9070. SEP is a launch reference, not a promise that every partner card would sell at that price: premium cooling and factory-overclocked models can cost more. AMD’s launch specifications and pricing

RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 specifications

The launch models share 16GB of GDDR6 memory, a 256-bit memory interface and 64MB of Infinity Cache. The XT has more compute resources and a higher board-power rating; AMD’s reference specifications are the baseline, not a guarantee of every partner card’s clocks, dimensions or connectors.

What RDNA 4 changes in practice

Ray tracing gets a bigger role

AMD added new dedicated ray-tracing accelerators and made ray tracing a central part of the RDNA 4 pitch. Independent launch reviews found a meaningful step forward over comparable previous-generation Radeon cards. That is an improvement, not a guarantee of parity with Nvidia in every game: conventional ray tracing and especially demanding path tracing can produce very different rankings. Tom’s Hardware’s RX 9070 XT review; Ars Technica’s launch review

AI accelerators support FSR 4—but do not promise universal AI compatibility

RDNA 4 brings second-generation AI accelerators. One gaming use is FSR 4, AMD’s machine-learning upscaler, which the company said was trained using high-quality game data on AMD Instinct accelerators and designed to run with RDNA 4’s FP8 matrix capabilities. Dedicated AI hardware does not make these cards equivalent to Nvidia GPUs in every AI or creator task; support depends on the application, API, drivers and software ecosystem. AMD’s RDNA 4 and FSR 4 announcement

FSR 4 is game-specific and separate from frame generation

AMD said FSR 4 could be integrated into supported FSR 3.1 games through an upgrade path for developers and cited more than 30 supported games at launch. It is not automatically available in every game that supports an earlier FSR version. Upscaling reconstructs an image from a lower rendering resolution; frame generation creates additional displayed frames. A particular game may support one, both or neither, and image quality and perceived smoothness vary with the game, motion, resolution and settings. An FSR-enhanced result should not be compared with native rendering or another upscaler without identifying those test conditions.

How the cards performed against Nvidia at launch

Rasterized games

Independent launch testing generally found the RX 9070 XT competitive with the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti in conventional rasterized games, while the RX 9070 was closer to the RTX 5070. That made the XT’s $599 launch SEP an attractive value proposition on paper, but the value depended on the price of the actual partner card and the competing card in stock. Review averages are not a promise of the same result in every game or system. Ars Technica; Tom’s Hardware

Ray tracing and path tracing

Keep rasterized results separate from ray-tracing results when comparing cards. RDNA 4 improved Radeon’s ray-tracing position, but a buyer focused on heavy path tracing should check results from the specific games and settings they use; Nvidia may remain the better fit in those workloads. Upscaling and frame generation can change displayed performance, so comparisons should label whether they were enabled and distinguish generated frames from conventionally rendered ones.

1440p and 4K use

1440p high-refresh gaming is the clearest target for the RX 9070 XT, with the RX 9070 offering a lower-power option for players who do not need as much performance. Both can be used for 4K gaming, but “4K capable” does not mean native 4K at ultra settings in every demanding new game. Ray tracing, path tracing, texture settings, upscaling and frame generation all affect the experience. At high-refresh 1080p, a CPU can become the limiting factor before a GPU of this class is fully utilized.

Choosing between the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070

At their launch SEPs, the XT cost $50 more. Its 64 compute units versus 56 and 304W total board power versus 220W mark the basic trade: more GPU resources and a higher power target for the XT, against a lower price and power rating for the RX 9070. The launch price gap alone does not establish the performance-per-dollar in a particular game.

Memory, power and fit in your PC

What 16GB does—and does not—mean

Both launch cards have 16GB of GDDR6, a useful capacity for demanding textures and high-resolution gaming. Capacity is only one part of performance: bandwidth, cache, compute throughput, ray-tracing speed and game optimization also matter. Sixteen gigabytes is not a guarantee of future performance or a cure for every game’s memory demands.

Check the exact partner card before buying

  • For the RX 9070 XT, AMD lists 304W total board power, recommends a 750W PSU and specifies two 8-pin power connectors for the reference design. These figures describe the baseline, not every partner model.
  • The RX 9070’s listed total board power is 220W; check the specific card maker’s power-supply recommendation and connectors.
  • Confirm the card’s length, thickness, slot occupancy and connector placement against your case. A reference specification does not mean every partner model is compact.
  • Check PSU quality, age and available connectors, not just the wattage printed on its label.
  • Verify the outputs and the board model you are considering. AMD lists DisplayPort 2.1a and HDMI 2.1b support for the XT; partner implementations can vary.

AMD’s quick-reference guide and the official specifications page provide baselines. For partner-card examples, see ASUS’s RX 9070-series announcement; specifications should still be checked for the precise model being considered.

What the launch prices mean in the later market

The $599 and $549 figures are AMD’s U.S. launch SEPs from February 2025, not current street prices. A Tom’s Hardware price report available in August 2026 cited the RX 9070 XT at about $719—roughly $120 above its $599 launch SEP. That is a dated market signal, not a live quote or a price that applies to every seller or region. Tom’s Hardware’s GPU price report

The RX 9000 family and GPU market have changed since the original launch. Compare the current price of the exact card in stock, including taxes, shipping and rebates, against its closest Nvidia alternative. A premium RX 9070 XT can lose its value advantage if it approaches the price of a faster or better-suited competitor. Later family additions should not be confused with the two cards AMD announced on February 28, 2025.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Heavy path-tracing players: Compare current game-specific results; AMD’s rasterized position does not settle this workload.
  • CUDA-dependent creators or AI users: Confirm the exact application’s GPU support rather than inferring compatibility from AI accelerator counts.
  • Owners of a recent high-end card: The upgrade case from RX 7900 XT/XTX-class hardware is less compelling unless RDNA 4’s ray tracing, AI features or FSR 4 support is a priority.
  • 1080p-only players or owners of a capable midrange GPU: A cheaper card may be more sensible, particularly if the CPU limits high frame rates.
  • Compact-PC builders: Check the dimensions and power needs of the particular partner design; family-level specifications do not guarantee a small card.
  • Linux or professional-software users: Gaming specifications alone do not establish equivalent application support across operating systems or workloads.
