Epic’s MetaHuman 5.6 release left Early Access on June 3, 2025, and made MetaHuman Creator an Unreal Engine editor workflow rather than a browser-only character creator. It added body and clothing authoring, broadened capture and DCC workflows, and changed the licensing terms for characters created in 5.6 and later. The launch is historical: MetaHuman 5.8 is the current public release described by Epic, and the old web app is scheduled to close on November 5, 2026.

What MetaHuman is—and what launched

MetaHuman is a framework for creating and animating rigged digital humans, not just a face-generation website. Its tools include MetaHuman Creator for authoring characters, MetaHuman Animator for performance capture, and workflows for hair, clothing, assembly and export. Epic’s documentation describes the framework as intended for Unreal Engine 5 projects, with integrations and workflows involving tools such as Maya and Houdini. Epic’s MetaHuman documentation outlines the broader toolset.

The June 3, 2025 announcement concerned MetaHuman 5.6. Its defining change was moving character authoring into Unreal Engine. “Out of Early Access” marked a broader production release and a significant change in delivery, but it did not mean every workflow was finished or free of limitations.

What changed in MetaHuman 5.6

Character creation moved into Unreal Engine

Instead of relying on the browser app as the main authoring destination, users could create a MetaHuman Character asset in an Unreal project and open it in the editor. That let teams author characters alongside project assets and tools. Epic’s UE 5.6 creation guide documents the asset-based workflow.

Body authoring joined face editing

The new parametric body system let creators blend and sculpt body shapes and adjust measurements such as height, chest, waist and leg length. Epic presented the broader range of proportions as useful for characters with specific requirements, including fashion work. Its announcement described a “near infinite” range of body types; that should be understood as a claim about the system’s parametric flexibility, not arbitrary modeling without constraints.

Outfit Assets organized clothing and accessories

An Outfit Asset could group garments and accessories into a reusable wardrobe. Clothing could be authored for multiple body shapes and resized for compatible characters. Epic also said these assets could be distributed through Fab and other marketplaces, alongside MetaHumans and compatible hair or clothing assets.

Capture and grooming workflows expanded

MetaHuman Animator expanded real-time capture beyond stereo head-mounted cameras and iPhones to mono cameras, including compatible webcams and some Android devices using Unreal Engine Live Link. Offline processing remained available. Camera compatibility depends on the device, app, capture mode and project setup; this is not a promise that every camera works automatically.

Epic also added a Houdini workflow for creating MetaHuman-compatible grooms, including more complex hairstyles, and bringing them into Unreal Engine through Alembic. The announcement additionally described improvements to scan coverage and capture processing intended to preserve more facial variation and detail. Those fidelity improvements are Epic’s product claims; the announcement did not provide an independent benchmark or quantified comparison.

Shared standards supported reuse and distribution

Epic said MetaHumans created in 5.6 or later shared standards that made it possible to reuse animation, clothing and grooms across characters. The release also brought MetaHuman-compatible assets to Fab and third-party marketplaces. Standardization can make reuse easier, but it also means teams are working within Epic’s character and asset conventions.

How to create a MetaHuman in the current workflow

The in-editor Creator workflow requires Unreal Engine 5.6 or later, an Epic Games account, MetaHuman Creator Core Data, and an internet connection. Although authoring takes place in Unreal Editor, Epic said its 5.6 workflow still used cloud services for autorigging and texture synthesis, so it was not a fully offline replacement for the web app. See Epic’s getting-started guide and character creation documentation.

  1. Install Unreal Engine through the Epic Games Launcher. In the engine installation options, select MetaHuman Creator Core Data.
  2. Create or open an Unreal Engine project running a supported version, then enable the MetaHuman Creator and related MetaHuman plugins as required.
  3. In the Content Browser, right-click and choose MetaHuman > MetaHuman Character. Name and save the asset.
  4. Double-click the MetaHuman Character asset to open Creator in Unreal Editor.
  5. Use the available Presets, Import, Head and Body, Materials, Hair and Clothing, Export, and Assembly tools to build and prepare the character.

For an overview of the editor’s panels and tools, consult Epic’s Creator navigation guide.

If Creator or its assets are missing

  • Return to the Epic Games Launcher’s Unreal Engine installation options and add MetaHuman Creator Core Data.
  • Check that the required MetaHuman plugins are enabled and that the project uses UE 5.6 or later.
  • Do not expect the legacy web app to have the same features as the in-editor workflow; its generation was frozen at the UE 5.5 era, and Epic has announced its retirement.

What changed after the Early Access exit

MetaHuman 5.6 was a milestone, not the endpoint. Epic released 5.7 with Unreal Engine 5.7 on November 12, 2025. Later 5.7 body-conforming improvements addressed constraints present in 5.6: source meshes generally needed the standard MetaHuman A-pose, character height was restricted, and FBX round-tripping could fail when vertex ID ordering was not preserved. Suitable source preparation remained important. These corrections are a reason to test a pipeline against the specific engine and MetaHuman versions in use rather than assuming all 5.6 assets will behave identically in later releases. See the 5.7 body-conforming update.

As of August 18, 2026, Epic’s current public release was MetaHuman 5.8, made available June 18, 2026. Epic’s release information highlights crowd tools, expanded body workflows, single-camera body capture and the open-sourcing of core MetaHuman libraries under the MIT license. Crowd features address a different problem from creating a single hero character: populating scenes at scale with lower-fidelity instances, levels of detail and optimized assets. Consult the 5.8 release notes for version-specific details.

The web Creator is scheduled to close

Epic announced that access to the MetaHuman Creator web application will end on November 5, 2026. It had already frozen that browser workflow at the UE 5.5 generation when the in-editor version arrived with UE 5.6, and new users were directed to Unreal Engine. Epic’s discontinuation notice is the key source for staged access restrictions and the termination date.

If a project depends on characters authored in the older web app, preserve and export the assets you need before access ends, and check Epic’s migration and asset documentation for the applicable character generation. Do not assume legacy browser-created characters and UE 5.6-or-later MetaHumans are interchangeable. Epic documents changes to body rigs and joint orientations in later assets; studios using Maya rigs, retargeting, corrective setups or custom scripts should validate upgrades before replacing production characters. See the plugin overview and the asset changes documentation.

Licensing, cost and production trade-offs

Epic says MetaHuman is included under the standard Unreal Engine license and is free for users making under $1 million in revenue. That is a qualified licensing statement, not a guarantee that every commercial use is cost-free: projects above the threshold may be subject to the applicable Unreal Engine commercial terms. Review Epic’s MetaHuman license information and the Unreal Engine content license for the terms that apply to your project.

  • Strong fit: Unreal-centric teams seeking realistic human characters, standardized rigs, facial or performance capture, reusable wardrobes, or integration with Unreal animation and production workflows.
  • Less suitable: Teams centered on Blender, Unity, Godot or a proprietary engine; projects needing a fully offline generator, unrestricted topology or bespoke rig architecture; and productions built around highly stylized or non-human characters.
  • Plan for pipeline and runtime costs: High visual fidelity does not guarantee acceptable frame rates or storage costs on target hardware. Character assets, shaders, animation data and integration work all matter. Test representative characters in the intended project and deployment environment.
  • Consider ecosystem dependence: Export and DCC integrations exist, but the primary authoring and assembly workflow remains Unreal-centered. A transfer to another application does not make the full workflow engine-neutral.

Should you adopt MetaHuman?

For teams already building in Unreal Engine, MetaHuman’s transition out of Early Access made character creation more directly part of the project pipeline, while adding body authoring, wardrobe assets and wider capture options. The best starting point for new work is the current in-editor workflow, not a browser tutorial that targets the frozen legacy app. Before migrating an established production, verify character-generation compatibility, rig changes, licensing and performance on the actual target platform.
