You can use voice chat without buying a camera, but GameChat requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership as of September 28, 2026.
What happens when you press the C button?
Pressing C opens the C Menu, the control panel for GameChat. The button is on the right Joy-Con 2, Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller and Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube Controller. It does not take a screenshot or act as a camera shutter.
Opening the menu is not the same as starting a conversation. From there, you can create a GameChat room, join one you were invited to, or manage an active chat. Invitations can also appear as on-screen notifications while you play; Nintendo says you can respond by pressing C or HOME. In a room, use the available controls to mute or unmute, turn video on or off, and start screen sharing. Which options appear can depend on the game or context. Nintendo’s GameChat guide explains the controls.
GameChat is a console-integrated way to talk and share play with friends, whether you are playing the same game, different games, or no game. A group can include up to 12 friends, but no more than four users can share video and/or their game screen simultaneously.

Nintendo’s support documentation says GameChat requires Nintendo Switch Online. The temporary free-access period ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026. The membership requirement and phone verification apply to using the feature; a camera is only needed if you want to send video. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ and GameChat guide for setup details.
Nintendo says the built-in microphone adjusts to the surroundings, filters background noise and game audio, and adapts its volume. Those are Nintendo’s descriptions of the feature, not independent test results.
How to set up GameChat
- Connect the Switch 2 to the internet and sign in to a Nintendo Account.
- Register and verify the phone number associated with the account by text message.
- Make sure the account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and add or approve the friends you want to chat with.
- If you want video, connect a compatible USB camera. For a third-party camera, check it at HOME Menu → System Settings → Controllers & Accessories → Test USB Camera.
- Press C on the right Joy-Con 2 or another supported Switch 2 controller, then create a room or accept an invitation.
- Use the C Menu to enable voice, video or screen sharing as needed.
In handheld or tabletop mode, a USB-C camera can connect to the console’s top USB-C port. In TV mode, a standard USB camera can connect to the dock. Nintendo’s own camera is designed to connect to the console’s top USB-C port. Nintendo says some third-party USB cameras may work, but it does not guarantee compatibility; the test tool is the practical check before relying on one. Nintendo’s FAQ has the camera guidance.

Do you need to buy Nintendo’s camera?
No. The Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is a separately sold accessory for video chat and compatible CameraPlay features, but neither the camera nor video is required for voice chat. Nintendo says compatible third-party USB cameras may work, too. If you already own a webcam, test it before buying another one.
Nintendo’s official camera page describes the accessory and its Switch 2 uses: Nintendo Switch 2 Camera. TechRadar reported a U.S. list price of $54.99 and described the camera’s 1080p video, approximately 110-degree field of view, privacy shutter and fixed stand in a January 2026 comparison. That is a reported price signal and independent review description, not a guaranteed current checkout price or Nintendo performance promise. TechRadar’s camera comparison provides that review context.

The camera is not always on. Nintendo says its green status light is illuminated when the camera is on and off when it is not in use; it activates when a player turns on the camera in GameChat or uses CameraPlay in a compatible game. Nintendo’s own camera also has a physical privacy shutter. You can use GameChat with voice only and leave video off.

Nintendo’s rules for younger and supervised users add approval steps. Users under 16 and supervised users require parent or guardian approval through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smart-device app. Children can chat only with Nintendo Account friends approved by a parent or guardian, and video chat requires separate permission. Nintendo also provides parents access to chat-related information, including who the child chatted with and for how long, and parents can restrict video. Consult the Nintendo Switch 2 FAQ for the account and parental-control details.
Quick Recap
If something does not work
The C button opens a menu, but you cannot start a chat
- Check that the console is online and GameChat setup is complete.
- Confirm that the Nintendo Account has completed text-message verification and has Nintendo Switch Online.
- Make sure you have an approved friend to invite, or an active invitation to join.
- Check whether a supervised-account restriction or the current game context limits the option you want.
- Make sure you are using a supported Switch 2 controller; the C button is not a general feature of original Nintendo Switch controllers.
Voice works but video does not
- Check that the camera is connected to the console’s top USB-C port or, in TV mode, the dock.
- Run HOME Menu → System Settings → Controllers & Accessories → Test USB Camera.
- Check camera permission, especially for a supervised account, and make sure another feature is not already using the camera.
- If it is a third-party model, remember Nintendo does not guarantee that every USB camera will work.
Is the camera worth it?
- For voice coordination: Skip the camera. The console’s built-in microphone supports voice chat.
- For face-to-face play: A camera adds video, but consider the room’s four-person simultaneous video/screen-sharing limit and the privacy controls.
- If you already own a webcam: Test it through the console settings before spending more.
- If you want a first-party accessory: Nintendo’s camera is designed for Switch 2, but compare its current price and placement needs with your setup before buying.
