On Java Edition, the fastest fix for most home servers is to stop every server instance, set server-ip= (blank) in the correct server.properties file, leave server-port=25565 initially, and start the server again. If the log says Address already in use, identify and stop the process occupying the port. If it says Cannot assign requested address, the configured local IP is usually invalid or stale.
This startup problem normally occurs before router port forwarding or internet connectivity matters. Those settings become relevant only after the server starts and local or remote players still cannot connect. Quick fix for a Java Edition server
# server.properties
server-ip=
server-port=25565- Use the console
stopcommand, close the server window or panel, and back up the server folder. - Open the
server.propertiesfile used by the server you actually launch. - Delete everything after
server-ip=. Do not enter your public IP, router address, an old private IP, or a friend’s address. - Leave
server-port=25565until you establish that the port is genuinely occupied. - Check for a second Java/server process, then restart.
- Test from the host with
localhostor127.0.0.1.
For most home-hosted Java servers, a blank server-ip lets Minecraft listen on the machine’s available interfaces. It is not a field for the public/WAN address. Deliberate interface binding for a VPN, Hamachi, or multi-interface host is an advanced exception.
Read the complete exception
Address already in use: bind
Another process is already listening on the requested port. It may be an old server that did not exit, another modpack, a proxy, a container, a hosting-panel instance, or an unrelated application.

Cannot assign requested address: bind
The server was told to use an IP address that this computer does not currently own or cannot use. Clear server-ip first. A public IP normally belongs to the router, not a local network interface.
Java Edition troubleshooting, step by step
1. Stop and back up the intended server
Run stop in the console when possible, close launchers and wrappers, and back up the world and configuration files before editing. Confirm the startup script’s working directory; multiple installations, modpacks, and panels can each have a different server.properties.
2. Correct server-ip
Open the file in a plain-text editor and use:
server-ip=Remove accidental spaces and check that there is not a duplicate configuration file elsewhere. If you intentionally need a specific interface, verify that address locally with ipconfig (Windows), ifconfig (macOS), or ip addr (Linux). A DHCP change, disconnected VPN, or removed virtual adapter can make a previously valid address disappear.

3. Find and stop the process holding the port
Do not kill every Java process: Java may be running unrelated software.

- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, then inspect Processes or Details for
java.exe,javaw.exe,bedrock_server.exe, panels, and wrappers. - For a precise check, run
netstat -ano | findstr :25565The final number is the PID. Identify it with
tasklist /FI "PID eq <PID>" - If it is definitely the unwanted server, stop it gracefully or use
taskkill /PID <PID> /Fas a last resort.
macOS and Linux
lsof -nP -iTCP:25565 -sTCP:LISTENOn Linux, ss -ltnp | grep 25565 is an alternative. Stop the identified service gracefully; use kill <PID>, and reserve kill -9 <PID> for a process that will not exit normally.
4. Check all server and proxy configurations
Every listening service needs a distinct local port. For example:

# Server A
server-port=25565
# Server B
server-port=25566Check server.properties, startup scripts, Docker or container mappings, proxy settings such as Velocity or BungeeCord, and hosting-panel allocations. A port collision can persist if only one of those layers is changed.
5. Change server-port only for a confirmed conflict
If another required application owns 25565, choose an unused port such as 25566:
server-port=25566- Restart the server and confirm it binds.
- Update the operating-system firewall for the new port and process.
- For internet players, change the router forwarding destination and any DNS, tunnel, proxy, or panel allocation.
- Tell Java players to use
public-address:25566.
Changing the port does not repair an invalid server-ip, and the normal Java port is a default rather than an immutable requirement. The official server download page explains the Java runtime and network setup context: Minecraft Java server download.

Separate startup failure from connection failure
Test locally first
Once the console stays running, connect on the host using localhost or 127.0.0.1 and the configured port. Then test from another device on the same LAN using the host’s private IP.
Only then investigate outside connections
If local and LAN tests work, examine the router’s forwarding rule, the host’s current private address, firewall permissions, ISP CGNAT, public-address changes, DNS, VPNs, and whether the client and server versions and editions are compatible. A stale router destination usually lets the server start but prevents outside players from reaching it. Port forwarding and firewall rules usually affect traffic to a listening service; they do not normally cause Address already in use.

Bedrock Dedicated Server differences
Bedrock Dedicated Server uses the bedrock_server executable, not a Java .jar. Microsoft documents Windows and Ubuntu Linux support. Its documented default ports are:

Values may be changed within the documented 1–65535 range. Use the configured port, not Java’s 25565, in diagnostic commands. Microsoft references local Windows testing with 127.0.0.1:19132 and explains startup and firewall requirements at Bedrock Dedicated Server getting started and Bedrock server properties.
Multiple Bedrock instances
Assign each instance a unique server-port and, when IPv6 is enabled, a unique server-portv6. Check enable-lan-visibility: Microsoft notes that true can make a server bind default LAN-discovery ports even when custom game ports are set, creating an additional collision on a shared host.
Same-machine Windows client
A Windows Bedrock client can have a separate loopback restriction even when the server has started. Microsoft provides this command:

Advanced causes worth checking
- Hidden restart loop: a panel or script may immediately launch a second copy after a crash.
- VPN and virtual adapters: Hamachi, Tailscale, ZeroTier, and corporate VPNs can add or remove local addresses.
- Changed DHCP address: keep
server-ipblank; reserve the host’s private address in the router if forwarding is required. - IPv6 configuration: avoid adding IPv6 to the first fix; establish ordinary IPv4 operation first.
- Management ports: newer Java releases can expose an optional
management-server-port, separate fromserver-port. If enabled, it also needs an unused port; see Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.9 release notes. - Different error category:
UnsupportedClassVersionErrorindicates an incompatible Java runtime, while outdated-client or world-version messages are compatibility problems, not port binding failures.
Final diagnostic checklist
- The server folder and startup command are the intended ones.
- The console shows the complete exception line.
server-ip=is blank unless deliberate interface binding is required.- The configured port is not owned by an unwanted process.
- Other servers, proxies, containers, and panels use distinct ports.
- Local connection succeeds before router or firewall troubleshooting begins.
- Any changed port is reflected in firewall, forwarding, DNS, tunnel, and client instructions.
- Java and Bedrock settings and default ports have not been mixed.
