What kind of game is The Mermaid’s Curse?
PARANORMASIGHT: The Mermaid’s Curse—Japanese title PARANORMASIGHT FILE38 伊勢人魚物語—is a single-player supernatural mystery adventure presented as an interactive story. Rather than a conventional action game or open-ended detective simulator, it centers on reading, investigation, clue interpretation, and deduction.

The story moves to Ise-Shima, Japan, and the fictional island of Kameshima, where local legends about the “Mermaids of Ise” become entangled with a series of curses. The main character, young pearl diver Yuza Minakuchi, and his friend Azami Kumoi are among the people drawn into the mystery. Other perspectives include a girl of unknown origins, a foreign treasure hunter, and a housewife investigating a drowning. Their intersecting stories gradually bring the island’s hidden history into view; that setup is best approached without spoilers.
How investigation and progression work
Players follow multiple character viewpoints and inspect scenes for clues as they work toward the truth. Square Enix highlights 360-degree backgrounds based on real locations and vistas, created in collaboration with Mie Prefecture, as well as new gameplay systems and a diving minigame. Those features add ways to explore the setting, but the game remains fundamentally narrative-led: expect substantial reading and paced investigation rather than combat or reflex challenges.
Do you need to play The Seven Mysteries of Honjo first?
No hard prerequisite is identified in Square Enix’s presentation of the game. The Mermaid’s Curse begins a new story with a new cast, setting, and regional legend, so it is a reasonable entry point. The earlier PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo is set in Sumida, Tokyo, and follows a different supernatural mystery. Playing it first can provide broader series context, but the available official descriptions do not say it is required.
What Android buyers should know
- Age rating: Google Play lists the game as Mature 17+. Its occult and horror themes may not suit younger players.
- Player format: The listing identifies it as single-player, with an interactive-story presentation intended for touch play.
- Device compatibility: A Google Play listing does not guarantee compatibility with every Android phone or tablet. The available listing information does not establish minimum Android version, chipset, RAM, storage, or controller support; check the store page on the device you plan to use.
- Updates: Google Play’s change notes mention puzzle adjustments, clearer guidance and Storyteller hints, a fix for a display issue on certain device models, and other minor bug fixes. If you encounter a display problem, update the game before troubleshooting further.
- Safe purchase: Use the official Google Play listing, rather than unofficial APK sites, which can introduce malware, licensing, update, and save-compatibility risks.
Is it a reduced Android port?
The official release notice lists Android alongside iOS and Nintendo Switch as a launch platform, and the Google Play listing describes the same story and promoted gameplay features. That supports treating Android as an official release, not an unofficial adaptation. It does not establish performance or visual parity with Switch or Steam, so claims about frame rate, resolution, or comparative quality would require device-specific testing.
Who is it for?
Consider it if you enjoy visual novels, Japanese folklore, atmospheric supernatural mysteries, and stories that ask you to connect clues across several viewpoints. Its one-time purchase also suits players who would rather pay upfront for a complete story than deal with ads, energy timers, or in-game purchases.
It is a weaker fit if you want action-heavy gameplay, short casual puzzles, or a free mobile game. The $24.99 U.S. listing price is a substantial commitment for a phone game, and the experience depends on enjoying extended stretches of narrative and reading.
