Start with Steam’s official recovery flow at help.steampowered.com. Choose the sign-in help option, search with your account email, linked phone number, or Steam account name, and follow the verification prompts to create a new password. The correct branch depends on which recovery methods you still control—and whether the account may have been hijacked.
Before you start
- Use only
steampowered.com,store.steampowered.com,steamcommunity.com, orhelp.steampowered.com. Steam warns against unsolicited “support” messages from chat, Discord, or social media; its official guidance is at Steam’s account-security FAQ. - Have your Steam account name, former email addresses, linked phone number, or saved Steam Guard recovery code available. Do not post these details publicly.
- If you see changed account details, unknown trades or purchases, or suspect malware, secure the computer and email account before resetting Steam (see Steam’s stolen-account instructions).
Choose the recovery route that matches your situation
| Situation | Best first action | If it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Password forgotten; email works | Search with the Steam account email and request a reset message. | Check filtered folders, request a new message, and use the newest code. |
| Password forgotten; phone works | Search with the phone number associated with Steam. | Use Steam Support if the number is no longer recognized. |
| Only the account name is known | Search by Steam account name. | Use the contact-support option if Steam cannot identify the account. |
| Email account unavailable | Try the linked phone number or account name. | Open a Steam Support case and separately recover the old email account. |
| Phone or Mobile Authenticator lost | Try the linked phone number or saved authenticator recovery code. | Use Steam’s lost-authenticator/support route. |
| Account may be stolen | Scan the device and secure the email account first. | Then use the hijacked-account recovery path. |
Reset your Steam password with your email or phone
- Open Steam Support.
- Choose Help, I can’t sign in (wording can change between the website and client).
- Select I forgot my Steam Account name or password, or the equivalent forgotten-login option.
- Enter your account email address, linked phone number, or Steam account name, then complete the CAPTCHA or other verification challenge.
- Select the account Steam finds and request the available recovery email, text message, or code.
- Open the message from Steam and follow its reset link or instructions. Create a new, unique password that you do not use for email or another service.
- Sign in and review Steam Guard and other security settings.
The exact buttons depend on your account configuration. Steam’s current lookup page supports email, phone, and account-name searches and provides a support route when it cannot find the account: Steam login recovery.
Recover Steam when you know only the account name
Use the same recovery page and choose the account-name search. If Steam locates the account, it may show a partially masked recovery destination or offer another verification route. The account name starts the lookup; it does not guarantee an automatic reset.
If no account appears, choose the page’s option to contact Steam Support. Explain that you know the account name but lost the password, provide a new accessible contact email, and submit only information requested inside the official form. Do not repeatedly guess passwords or create a replacement account before completing this attempt.

If you still control the email account
- Check Inbox, spam, junk, Promotions, quarantine, and server-side filters.
- Confirm that the address is the one actually associated with Steam; an old address or alias may be different.
- Request a fresh message and use the newest code. Older Steam Guard codes can stop working.
- Add
[email protected]and[email protected]to trusted senders. Steam advises contacting support if a message has not arrived after three hours; see Steam Guard email troubleshooting.
Knowing the Steam password is not required when you can successfully verify the account through its recovery email or another offered method.
If you lost access to the email address
- Try the phone number linked to Steam or search with the account name.
- If Steam identifies the account, select the option saying that you no longer have access to the displayed email address.
- Provide a new, accessible contact email when the Steam Support form requests one.
- Answer ownership questions using only information requested in that case. Steam’s evidence requirements are case-specific; no particular receipt, payment record, or document is guaranteed to be accepted.
- In parallel, use your email provider’s own account-recovery process to regain the old mailbox.
If you lost your phone or Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator
- If the Steam-linked phone number is still active, use it to request a text-message recovery code. Steam describes phone recovery and Mobile Authenticator capabilities at Steam Guard’s official page.
- Use the recovery code you saved when adding the authenticator, if you still have it.
- Choose the lost-authenticator option in the official login-help flow: Steam login recovery.
- If the phone, number, and recovery code are all unavailable, contact Steam Support through that flow. A text-message branch may remove the authenticator and return the account to email-based Steam Guard, but only when Steam can verify the linked number; the sign-in prompts are shown at Steam’s sign-in page.
The Mobile Authenticator is the stronger everyday Steam Guard option because it relies on possession of the physical device for sign-ins, trades, and Community Market listings. Losing that device therefore creates an extra recovery step.

If your Steam account was hacked
A forgotten password alone does not prove theft. Treat the case as hijacking when the email, phone, password, profile, trades, or purchases changed without your permission.
- Stop entering credentials on suspicious pages and stop following instructions from unofficial “support” accounts.
- Scan the computer for malware, keyloggers, spyware, malicious browser extensions, and unauthorized software.
- Change the password of the email account associated with Steam, secure its recovery methods, and enable its two-factor authentication.
- Return to Steam’s stolen-account recovery page and recover the Steam account.
- After access is restored, change the Steam password again if necessary and inspect devices, contact details, trades, market activity, and purchases.
Steam says Support representatives will not ask for your Steam password. Its stolen-account FAQ is available at this official page.

When the recovery email or code does not arrive
- Verify the destination address and check every inbox category, spam folder, quarantine area, and forwarding rule.
- Request one new code and use that newest message rather than an older code.
- Add Steam’s official sender addresses to trusted contacts as described in Steam’s email-code guidance.
- Wait for delivery; Steam advises contacting support when the message has not arrived after three hours.
- If a browser privacy tool or cleanup utility keeps deleting cookies, it can cause repeated Steam Guard prompts. Retry later through the official site instead of using an unofficial recovery service.
Secure the account after recovery
- Use a long, unique Steam password and do not reuse it for email.
- Confirm the account email address and phone number are yours.
- Enable Steam Guard; prefer the Mobile Authenticator where practical.
- Review authorized devices. Deauthorize unfamiliar devices or use Sign out everywhere when something looks wrong. Steam notes that there is no limit to authorized machines, so remove access you do not recognize.
- Check profile details, associated accounts, trades, Community Market listings, and recent purchases. Contact Steam promptly about unauthorized transactions.
- Remove suspicious programs and browser extensions, and keep the computer and email account protected.
- Store the Steam Guard recovery code offline in a secure place. Steam warns never to provide Steam Guard files or codes to another person; see Steam’s security guidance.
Avoid Steam recovery scams
- There is no legitimate shortcut around Steam’s ownership checks. Paid “account recovery” services can steal credentials or money.
- Do not call phone numbers found in search results, send your password to a supposed employee, or give anyone Steam Guard files, codes, screenshots, or remote access.
- Check the address bar before signing in. A page that merely resembles Steam is not an official recovery page.
- Use the support website yourself rather than clicking an unsolicited link, even if the message came from a friend whose account may have been compromised.
Official Steam Support is free and begins at help.steampowered.com. Outcomes and requested ownership information vary by account, so no outside service can guarantee recovery.
