How to Set Up a VPN on PS4: Router, Windows and Mac Options

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can’t install a conventional VPN app directly on a PS4. To route the console through a VPN, connect it to a VPN-enabled router or share a computer’s VPN connection. For most people who can’t change their router, a Windows hotspot is the simplest starting point; a wired connection is generally the steadier choice when available.

Choose a setup method

Method Best for What you need Main trade-off
VPN router Regular home use and multiple devices A router that supports a VPN client and a VPN subscription Initial configuration can be difficult; router hardware may limit speed.
Windows Wi-Fi hotspot A no-router-change setup Windows 10 or 11 PC, VPN app and a Wi-Fi adapter that supports Mobile Hotspot The PC must stay on, and the correct VPN adapter must be shared.
Windows Ethernet sharing A wired connection from a nearby PC Windows PC, VPN app and Ethernet cable If Ethernet is also the PC’s internet source, it may need a second Ethernet port.
Mac Ethernet sharing Mac owners with Ethernet hardware Mac, VPN app, Ethernet cable and, if needed, a USB-C or Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter Internet Sharing and adapter behavior can vary by macOS version and VPN client.
Smart DNS Some DNS-based streaming or location features A compatible Smart DNS service It does not encrypt the PS4’s traffic or offer the same IP privacy as a VPN.

A phone hotspot can be a temporary option, but mobile data limits, carrier NAT and phone or VPN-app support for sharing vary. It is not a dependable universal substitute for the methods above.

What a VPN can—and can’t—do for PS4

A VPN routes traffic through a VPN server, so other players may see the server’s public IP rather than your home IP. That can reduce direct exposure to connection-based attacks, but it does not stop every attack or secure a compromised account. A VPN can also let you test a connection through another geographic endpoint or, in some cases, avoid ISP traffic management. It may instead add latency or reduce speed.

A VPN endpoint does not change your PlayStation account’s country, Store region, payment region or game ownership. Games and streaming services can detect or block VPN and proxy addresses, and their rules and availability vary. A VPN is not a guaranteed way to access a particular game feature or streaming catalog.

What PS4 network settings support

The PS4’s connection setup covers Wi-Fi or LAN, IP address, DNS, MTU and proxy settings; it does not provide the normal app-install and sign-in flow for a commercial VPN. Sony’s PS4 internet setup guide documents the console’s standard connection path: Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection.

For a VPN supplied by a router or shared computer, the usual choices are automatic IP, DHCP host name not specified, automatic DNS, automatic MTU and no proxy. Follow your VPN provider’s instructions if they explicitly call for a different DNS setting. Do not enter VPN server details into the PS4 proxy field: a proxy and a VPN are different services.

Before you start

  • Have an active VPN subscription and a VPN server location selected. Choose a nearby endpoint first if gaming performance is the priority.
  • Choose a router, Windows PC or Mac that can run the VPN. Provider guidance for “PlayStation support” generally means one of these external connection methods, not a native PS4 app. See NordVPN’s console guidance and Surfshark’s PlayStation setup options.
  • For computer sharing, keep the computer awake, connected and running the VPN while the PS4 uses it.
  • Have an Ethernet cable for a wired setup. A Mac without a built-in Ethernet port may need a compatible adapter.
  • Update the PS4 system software if an update is available. Menu labels can vary slightly by language and software version.

Set up a VPN on a router

This is usually the most convenient arrangement for a permanent home setup: the PS4 connects to the router like any other device, and the computer can be off. Router VPN clients differ, so use the instructions for your router firmware and VPN provider rather than assuming a single universal interface. The router must support a VPN client and the protocol your provider requires. See Surfshark’s router and console guidance.

Configure the router

  1. Sign in to the router’s administrator interface.
  2. Open its VPN-client section and select a protocol supported by both the router and provider.
  3. Enter or import the provider’s configuration details and required credentials or authorization.
  4. Choose a VPN server location, save the configuration and activate the client.
  5. Confirm the router reports an active VPN connection. On another device connected to the same router, check that the public IP corresponds to the chosen VPN endpoint.

Connect the PS4

  1. On the PS4, open Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection.
  2. Select Use Wi-Fi or Use a LAN Cable, depending on how the console connects to the router.
  3. Choose Easy, then select the router’s network if using Wi-Fi.
  4. When prompted about a proxy server, choose Do Not Use.
  5. Select Test Internet Connection.

Router VPNs can be slower on hardware with limited processing power. Unless the router supports per-device routing, every device using its VPN connection may share the same endpoint.

Share a VPN through a Windows 10 or 11 hotspot

This is a practical no-router-change option. Windows Mobile Hotspot alone does not ensure that the PS4 uses the VPN: Internet Connection Sharing must route through the VPN adapter, not merely the computer’s ordinary internet adapter. Adapter labels vary by VPN app. ExpressVPN documents this approach for Windows 10 and 11 in its Windows sharing guide.

  1. Install the VPN app on the Windows PC, sign in and identify its VPN network adapter. If the provider’s sharing instructions require setup before connecting, temporarily disconnect the VPN while configuring the hotspot.
  2. Open Settings → Network & internet → Mobile hotspot. Under Share my internet connection from, choose the PC’s internet source, commonly Wi-Fi.
  3. Turn on Mobile hotspot. Open its properties and set a network name and password you can recognize.
  4. Open Settings → Network & internet → Advanced network settings → More network adapter options on Windows 11. On Windows 10, open Change adapter options.
  5. Right-click the VPN adapter and choose Properties. The name depends on the VPN client; ExpressVPN’s guide identifies a WinTUN adapter for its setup.
  6. Open the Sharing tab. Select Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection, then choose the virtual hotspot adapter as the home-network connection. Apply the change.
  7. Connect the VPN app to a server. Keep the VPN connected before testing the PS4.
  8. On the PS4, open Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection → Use Wi-Fi, select the Windows hotspot and choose Easy.
  9. Choose Do Not Use a Proxy Server, then run Test Internet Connection.

Windows updates or VPN-app changes can alter adapter names or sharing configuration. If the PC sleeps, turns off or disconnects from the VPN, the PS4 may lose internet access or use an unprotected route, depending on the sharing design and kill-switch behavior.

Share a VPN through Windows Ethernet

A wired PC-to-PS4 link avoids the extra wireless hop between those devices and is often the more consistent computer-sharing option. It does not guarantee lower ping: the VPN server and network route still matter. Surfshark’s Windows Ethernet sharing guide notes that a PC using Ethernet as its internet source may need two Ethernet ports to share by cable.

  1. Connect the PC to the internet and install and sign in to the VPN app.
  2. Connect the PS4 to the PC with an Ethernet cable. If the PC’s internet connection also arrives over Ethernet, ensure it has a second Ethernet port; alternatively, use Wi-Fi as the PC’s upstream connection.
  3. In Windows network-adapter settings, open the VPN adapter’s Properties → Sharing tab.
  4. Allow other network users to connect through the PC’s internet connection and select the physical Ethernet adapter connected to the PS4.
  5. Connect the VPN to a server.
  6. On the PS4, open Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection → Use a LAN Cable → Easy.
  7. Choose Do Not Use a Proxy Server, then run Test Internet Connection.

Share a VPN from a Mac

Mac sharing is generally a wired setup. The exact interface names and which connection can be shared depend on macOS version and VPN client; if using a dock or adapter, select its actual network interface rather than assuming it is named “Ethernet.” Surfshark documents the current path in its PlayStation setup guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the VPN app, sign in and connect the Mac to a VPN server.
  2. Connect the Mac and PS4 with Ethernet. Use a compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter if needed.
  3. On the Mac, open System Settings → General → Sharing, then select Internet Sharing.
  4. Under Share your connection from, choose the interface carrying the internet connection. Under To devices using, select the Ethernet adapter connected to the PS4.
  5. Turn on Internet Sharing and confirm.
  6. On the PS4, open Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection → Use a LAN Cable → Easy.
  7. Choose Do Not Use a Proxy Server and run Test Internet Connection.

Smart DNS is not a VPN

Smart DNS may help with certain streaming-device configurations or DNS-based location handling, but it does not create the same encrypted tunnel as a full VPN. ExpressVPN distinguishes its MediaStreamer Smart DNS from its VPN on its PlayStation page: MediaStreamer does not provide VPN encryption or hide your IP in the same way. Use Smart DNS only if that fits your goal; it is not a substitute for privacy or reducing direct IP exposure.

Check that the PS4 is using the connection

Run the console test

  1. Open Settings → Network → Test Internet Connection. Sony also uses this path in its PS4 connection troubleshooting guidance.
  2. Review Obtain IP Address, Internet Connection and PlayStation Network Sign-In, along with NAT Type and the reported download and upload speeds.
  3. Launch the game you actually play and check login, matchmaking, voice chat, NAT status, latency indicator, downloads and party or cross-play features. A successful console test does not guarantee every game service will accept the VPN endpoint.

Check the public IP from another device

The PS4 has limited options for checking its public IP directly. Connect a phone or laptop to the same VPN router or shared hotspot, then use an IP checker to see whether the public IP and approximate location correspond to the selected VPN server rather than the home ISP. ExpressVPN describes this verification approach in its Windows sharing guide. This confirms the route for that device; also check the VPN adapter or router status if the PS4’s behavior differs.

Troubleshoot common problems

The PS4 cannot obtain an IP address

  • Confirm the Windows hotspot or Mac Internet Sharing is on and the computer has not gone to sleep.
  • Check that Windows Internet Connection Sharing points to the correct destination adapter: the hotspot’s virtual adapter for Wi-Fi, or the physical Ethernet adapter connected to the PS4 for wired sharing.
  • Check the Ethernet cable and port, if wired.
  • Keep the PS4 connection setup on Easy with automatic IP settings.

The PS4 has internet, but it is not going through the VPN

  • Connect the VPN before testing the PS4.
  • Confirm the VPN adapter, not the normal Wi-Fi adapter, is shared in Windows.
  • Check the public IP on a device connected to the same shared network.
  • If the VPN app has changed adapters after an update, repeat the sharing configuration. On a router, confirm the VPN client is active, not merely configured.

The console or game reports NAT Type 3

A restrictive NAT can result from the VPN server, double NAT between the home router and sharing computer, carrier-grade NAT, blocked inbound or peer-to-peer traffic, or a game’s requirements. Try a different, preferably nearby VPN server and compare the PS4’s NAT type with the VPN off. A VPN change may not resolve it; do not assume port forwarding will help, since many commercial VPN services do not offer inbound port forwarding. If matchmaking, party chat or performance remains poor, the VPN route may not suit that game.

Gaming is slower or ping is higher

A distant or congested server, limited router or computer performance, an inefficient ISP-to-VPN route, the extra VPN hop or Wi-Fi sharing can all affect speed and latency. Test with the VPN off as a baseline, try another nearby server, use Ethernet between the PS4 and router or computer, and restart the network equipment and apps if necessary. Keep the VPN only if it addresses the problem you intended to solve; it is not a general lag fix.

Streaming is blocked

Streaming services may identify and block known VPN or proxy addresses. Access can change by service, title, location and date, and the service’s terms apply. A VPN or Smart DNS setup is not a guarantee of access.

The VPN disconnects or PSN or a game will not sign in

A dropped VPN may interrupt the PS4 connection or expose it to the ordinary internet route, depending on the router, sharing design and kill switch. Test what happens when the VPN disconnects rather than assuming the kill switch covers the shared console. If sign-in or matchmaking fails, try a nearby alternate server, compare with the VPN off, and check the specific game’s network behavior.
