Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThere is no single best Linux gaming distro for everyone. For most people starting out, Bazzite is the strongest all-round first choice; Nobara suits a conventional gaming desktop; SteamOS or ChimeraOS fit a dedicated controller-first PC. Drauger OS is still a real, downloadable project, but its own guidance makes it a better fit for experienced Linux users willing to handle extra maintenance than for a first-time switch from Windows.
The right choice depends on your exact GPU and handheld hardware, the games you play—especially multiplayer titles—and how much troubleshooting you will accept. A gaming-focused distribution can simplify setup, but it cannot make every Windows game or anti-cheat system work.
Quick comparison: which Linux gaming distro fits?
| Distribution | Best starting point for | Base and interface | Gaming setup | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bazzite | Most newcomers; desktop, handheld, or Steam-style gaming setups | Fedora-based image system, with desktop and gaming-mode variants | Steam and Lutris included; rollback to a previous system image is available | Image-based administration differs from a traditional distro; Intel and NVIDIA Steam Gaming Mode/HTPC support has known beta-quality issues. Bazzite · Documentation |
| Nobara | A more conventional desktop with gaming-oriented defaults | Fedora-based; Official, GNOME, KDE, Steam-HTPC, Steam-Handheld, and NVIDIA images | Gaming-focused setup and dedicated NVIDIA images | Hobby project, uses third-party repositories, and is supplied without warranty. Nobara downloads |
| SteamOS | Steam Deck and supported controller-first setups | Valve’s Linux-based Steam environment, with desktop mode | Tightly integrated Steam interface, suspend/resume, and Proton | Do not assume Valve’s installation path suits every desktop PC; check current hardware scope. SteamOS |
| ChimeraOS | A dedicated living-room gaming PC | Console-oriented Steam interface | Web-based route for adding supported non-Steam stores and games | Hardware may need troubleshooting, and some software or games will not work. Getting Started |
| Drauger OS | Experienced users seeking an Ubuntu-based gaming-first system | Ubuntu LTS base with KDE Plasma | Gaming-oriented system changes, PipeWire, and custom-kernel work are described by the project | Its maintainers say it is not intended as an everyday-use distro and that maintenance may be needed. About Drauger OS |
| Mainstream Fedora, Ubuntu/Kubuntu, Mint, or Arch-based distro | People who want a broad desktop, flexibility, or familiar distribution documentation | Varies by distribution and desktop | Gaming tools can be installed and configured as needed | Usually involves more manual setup than a gaming-focused image. |
This is a use-case guide, not a benchmark ranking. There is no controlled evidence here that one distro delivers universally higher frame rates.
What Drauger OS is—and who should use it
Drauger OS is a standalone Linux distribution built on Ubuntu LTS and explicitly focused on desktop gaming, rather than a general-purpose desktop that merely has Steam installed. Its project describes KDE Plasma, PipeWire, a custom kernel, and other gaming-oriented changes. Those choices describe the system’s design; they do not establish a universal performance advantage over Ubuntu, Fedora, or another distro. The project’s overview and home page also caution that it is not intended as an ordinary everyday-use system and may need maintenance.

Is Drauger OS still active in 2026?
As of the research cutoff of August 16, 2026, the official download page is live and the project’s GitHub organization shows repository activity in 2026. That supports calling it an active project, but does not prove a large development team, rapid release cadence, mature support operation, or long-term continuity. Drauger OS on GitHub
The published release information is inconsistent: the search-visible download listing reports version 7.8 stable and 7.9 beta, while the page content returned from the same URL shows 7.7. The ISO size likewise differs between those page representations. Treat the version, beta status, and download size as unverified until the official page is checked at the time you download; do not rely on a search snippet as the release record. How Linux gaming works—and what a distro cannot fix
Linux games fall into several distinct categories. A native Linux game has a Linux build. A Windows game launched through Steam may run with Proton, Valve’s compatibility tool based on Wine. Games outside Steam may use Wine-based tools such as Lutris or Heroic, but each launcher, game, and required service can add its own compatibility hurdles. It cannot guarantee that a specific game works. Compatibility can change with a game update, Proton version, launcher, DRM, mods, GPU driver, or anti-cheat policy. Multiplayer games are particularly important to verify before switching: support depends on the game and its developer’s configuration, not simply on whether the distro is gaming-branded.
- Check recent player reports: Search your exact games on ProtonDB. Read current reports, look for your GPU family and Proton version, and note any launch options rather than treating a community rating as a guarantee.
- Check multiplayer anti-cheat separately: Consult Are We Anti-Cheat Yet? and the game developer’s current statements. A title can launch yet still block online play.
- Test your real library: Install and play your most important games, including the launchers and peripherals you actually use, before removing Windows.
Bazzite: the best starting point for most new Linux gamers
Bazzite is the strongest default recommendation for a new Linux gaming user who wants gaming tools ready to use and a choice of desktop or SteamOS-like gaming interfaces. The project advertises Steam, Lutris, desktop and handheld/HTPC-oriented options, HDR and VRR support, NVIDIA drivers, and current Mesa components. It also retains system images so you can select an earlier image if an update causes trouble. These are project-described capabilities; check the documentation for your specific device and image. The trade-off is its image-based system model: it is not administered exactly like a traditional package-managed Fedora or Ubuntu installation, and installing system-level packages may require learning the project’s approach. Hardware and mode matter, too. Bazzite warns that Intel and NVIDIA support in Steam Gaming Mode and HTPC configurations is beta-quality with known issues, recommends desktop images for users who do not want to troubleshoot those gaming-mode problems, and notes limited support for Intel and some Ayaneo handhelds. Untested hardware may behave unpredictably. Bazzite documentation · Gaming hardware compatibility
Nobara: a conventional desktop with gaming conveniences
Nobara is a Fedora-based option for people who want a recognizable desktop as well as gaming-oriented defaults. Its download page lists Official, GNOME, KDE, Steam-HTPC, Steam-Handheld, and NVIDIA images; the NVIDIA downloads include the proprietary driver. That makes it a reasonable candidate for a gaming desktop that also needs to work for browsing, creative applications, or development. The project lists Nobara 43 images dated April 19–25, 2026, but check its current download page for the version available when you install. Nobara downloads
Nobara describes itself as a hobby distribution, uses third-party repositories including RPMFusion, and is provided without warranty. Its page notes that an NVIDIA image may take one to two minutes on first boot while DKMS builds kernel modules, and advises checking supported NVIDIA hardware. Do not infer that Nobara is more stable than another option without comparative evidence.

SteamOS and ChimeraOS for controller-first PCs
SteamOS: best when the Steam experience is the point
SteamOS is Valve’s Linux-based, gaming-optimized system, not just a general desktop with the Steam client. Its strengths are a controller-oriented Steam interface and integration with Steam features such as Cloud, Chat, game recording, system updates, and suspend/resume; it also provides desktop mode and runs many Windows games through Proton. Its most compelling path is supported Steam hardware, especially Steam Deck. Before installing it on another PC, check Valve’s current installation availability and hardware support rather than assuming every desktop is a supported target. Valve’s SteamOS page
ChimeraOS: a console appliance for a living-room PC
ChimeraOS boots into a gamepad-oriented Steam experience and documents a web-based path for adding Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Flathub, and some retro systems; added non-Steam games appear in Steam. Its appliance-like focus suits a PC mainly used for couch gaming, not someone who wants a flexible everyday desktop. Updates require a reboot. The project warns that some hardware may fail to initialize Steam or gamescope and fall back to GNOME; not every Steam game works, and AppImage compatibility is not guaranteed. Fedora KDE, Ubuntu or Kubuntu, Linux Mint, and Arch-based options such as Arch or EndeavourOS can all be sensible gaming systems. Their package ecosystems, documentation, and general desktop focus may matter more than preloaded gaming tools, particularly on a computer used for work or development. The cost is often additional setup for Steam, Proton, launchers, codecs, and drivers.

A gaming distro’s main advantage is usually reduced setup friction, not a guaranteed FPS boost. Outcomes depend heavily on the GPU driver, Vulkan support, kernel and Mesa versions, Proton build, compositor settings, game-specific compatibility, and the user’s willingness to troubleshoot. A custom or gaming kernel is not, by itself, proof of a measurable improvement in every title.
Check your hardware before choosing an image
Compatibility is about more than the graphics card. Use the selected project’s device-specific documentation—Bazzite, for example, separates minimum requirements, gaming-mode requirements, handheld compatibility, Vulkan support, and storage considerations—then confirm these items for your own PC. Bazzite hardware guide
- Exact GPU model and vendor, Vulkan capability, driver path, and whether NVIDIA gaming-mode support is established for the chosen image.
- Wi-Fi chipset, Bluetooth, audio output, and wired or wireless controller behavior.
- UEFI and Secure Boot requirements, storage layout, and whether you need to dual-boot.
- On a handheld: controls, TDP and fan controls, suspend/resume, and screen rotation.
- External-monitor output and variable refresh rate (VRR), if you use them.
Hardware support varies by distro, edition, and device. Do not assume that a feature advertised for one image or GPU vendor applies equally to all configurations.
Quick Recap
A safer installation and test workflow
- Back up first. Save personal files and, if keeping Windows, create Windows recovery media. Dual-booting can involve bootloader changes, Secure Boot, Windows Fast Startup, and shared-filesystem complications; using a separate drive for Linux reduces some risk but does not remove the need for a backup.
- Confirm the exact image and hardware support. Use the project’s image picker or device guide rather than guessing an ISO filename. Bazzite explicitly does not support Ventoy in its desktop installation guide, while Nobara recommends it for multi-ISO USBs—follow the instructions for the distro you chose. Bazzite desktop/laptop installation · Nobara download guidance
- Download from the official project and verify the file. Check its published checksum where provided. Nobara documents checksum verification on its download page.
- Boot the USB in UEFI mode and test before installing. Where a live environment is available, check graphics, Wi-Fi, sound, controller input, external display, and suspend/resume. Nobara’s installation guidance recommends UEFI and disabling Secure Boot to avoid installation problems; follow the chosen distro’s current instructions rather than applying that setting universally.
- Install, then update. Prefer a separate drive if practical. Apply the distro’s first-boot updates and use its documented driver and recovery process.
- Set up a representative slice of your library. Select or install the needed Proton version, configure non-Steam launchers if required, and test your most important single-player and multiplayer titles.
- Keep a recovery route. Know how to roll back an image where supported, restore Windows, or reinstall before relying on the new system as your only working PC.
Which distro should you choose?
- Pick Bazzite if you want the broadest ready-to-play starting point and a choice of desktop or Steam-like gaming mode, after confirming your hardware fits the chosen image.
- Pick Nobara if you prefer a more conventional Fedora desktop with gaming-oriented defaults or need its dedicated NVIDIA image path.
- Pick SteamOS or ChimeraOS if the machine is principally a controller-first gaming PC and the exact hardware is supported.
- Pick Drauger OS if you specifically want an Ubuntu-based gaming-first setup and are prepared for more maintenance and a smaller project ecosystem.
- Pick a mainstream distro if gaming is one part of a broader work, creative, or development machine, or you value general-purpose documentation and flexibility most.
