The Xbox app is installed through Microsoft Store, so a failed Xbox download is often a Store, Windows Update, account, region, or permissions problem—not just an Xbox-app problem. Work through the low-risk checks first, then move to repair tools if other Store apps or Windows updates are failing too.
Identify what is actually failing
Choose the symptom that matches your PC before changing advanced settings:
- Xbox is missing from Microsoft Store: investigate account, region, family, compatibility, or administrator restrictions.
- Get or Install is missing or disabled: check Store sign-in, authorization, region, and device compatibility.
- Download stays at 0%: check pending Windows restarts, Store updates, network access, storage, and cache.
- Installation starts and rolls back: repair the apps, then check Windows component health.
- Xbox installs but will not launch: repair, reset, or reinstall Xbox.
- Only games inside Xbox fail: capture the exact error; the issue may involve licensing, Gaming Services, a target drive, or permissions.
- Microsoft Store itself will not open: reset its cache and investigate Windows app infrastructure.
- Every Store app fails: prioritize Windows Update troubleshooting, DISM, and System File Checker.
1. Restart, then check the basics
Restart Windows before attempting a reinstall. A restart may be required after a feature or cumulative update before Store apps can install.
- Use a stable internet connection and temporarily test without an unnecessary VPN, proxy, DNS filter, or third-party firewall.
- Check free space on the system drive and on the drive selected for Microsoft Store apps or Xbox games.
- Disconnect unnecessary external drives and docks while testing.
- Confirm Windows date, time, and time zone are correct.
- If security software is suspected, pause it only for a controlled test and re-enable it immediately.
Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance covers connectivity, storage, external hardware, administrator access, update services, and security software as possible contributors: Windows Update troubleshooting.

2. Sign in to the correct Microsoft account
Windows sign-in and Microsoft Store sign-in are separate. Open Microsoft Store, select your account icon, and sign in with the Microsoft account that should own or access the app, subscription, or games. A local-only Windows account may not provide Store access, and a work or school account may be restricted by policy.
If the Store account is wrong, sign out and sign back in, then check the Store library again. On a managed PC, ask the organization’s administrator rather than trying to bypass policy. Microsoft describes local-account and managed-device restrictions here: Can’t find Microsoft Store.
3. Install Windows updates and restart again
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart Windows, even if no prominent restart prompt appears.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the updates and restart.
Try Xbox again after the restart. If a Settings label differs, search Start for Windows Update.
4. Update Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates or Check for updates, depending on the Store version.
- Let Store and related components finish updating.
- Restart Windows and retry Xbox.
Microsoft documents Store app updates through the Library: Get updates for apps and games in Microsoft Store.

5. Reset the Microsoft Store cache
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand select OK. - Wait while the blank Command Prompt window closes. This normally takes about ten seconds.
- Microsoft Store should open automatically; search for Xbox and try again.
wsreset.exe clears Store cache data. It does not repair every Windows component, so move on if the behavior is unchanged. Microsoft’s procedure is described in I can’t find or install an app from Microsoft Store.
6. Repair, then reset Xbox and Microsoft Store
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox, select its three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair and test Xbox.
- If it still fails, return to the same page and select Reset.
Repair attempts to fix the app without the full disruption of a reset. Reset is more destructive and can remove app data or sign-in state. Repeat the same process for Microsoft Store. If Gaming Services or Xbox Identity Provider is already listed and the error specifically names it, you may inspect its repair options; neither component appears on every Windows build.
Windows 10
Search Start for Apps & features, select Xbox, choose Advanced options, and use Repair before Reset. Microsoft’s app repair guidance is at Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed.
7. Check region, family settings, compatibility, and policy
Use this branch when Xbox is absent, unavailable, or the Install button is blocked. Microsoft lists region, family settings, compatibility, account authorization, and a required post-update restart as possible reasons an app cannot be found or installed.

Region and time
- Windows 11: Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Windows 10: Settings > Time & Language > Region.
- Make sure the country/region matches where you actually live.
Do not change region merely as a workaround. Microsoft warns that region affects apps, games, Xbox subscriptions, and account balances: Change your country or region in Microsoft Store.
Family and managed devices
A child account may be prevented from viewing or installing Xbox. The family organizer must review Microsoft Family Safety settings. On a work or school PC, Store availability may be disabled by organizational policy; only the administrator can change that.
Compatibility and catalog refresh
Sign in with the correct account, restart after updates, and search the Store again. A missing listing does not prove that Xbox has been removed: the Store may be filtering it because of compatibility, region, family controls, authorization, or catalog state.
8. Run the Store-app troubleshooter where available
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select Windows Store Apps.
- Select Run the troubleshooter.
Windows 11
Microsoft increasingly routes troubleshooting through the Get Help app and built-in troubleshooters. The older Windows Store Apps troubleshooter may not appear on every Windows 11 installation.

9. Repair Windows system files
Use these commands when multiple Store apps fail or Windows Update is also malfunctioning. Open Command Prompt as administrator, run the first command, wait for it to finish, then run the second:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows afterward and test Microsoft Store before Xbox. Both commands can pause for a while; do not close the window solely because progress appears stalled. Microsoft’s procedure is included in its Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.

Use reinstalling only after updates, cache reset, repair, and reset have failed:
- If Xbox is listed under Installed apps, uninstall only the Xbox app.
- Open Microsoft Store and select Library.
- Find Xbox and select Install or its download icon.
- If it is absent, search the Store again while signed in to the correct account.
The Store library is Microsoft’s supported route for reinstalling Store apps: Find and install your Microsoft downloads from Microsoft Store. Do not begin by removing shared gaming components.

Error-code clues
Record the complete code and where it appears before searching for a fix. Microsoft documents these examples, but a code can have different causes depending on whether it appears in Store, Windows Update, or Xbox:
| Code | Possible area |
|---|---|
| 0x80070005 | Permissions or access denied |
| 0x80248014 | Windows Update database or service |
| 0x80070002, 0x80070003, 0x80070057 | Update or installation failure conditions |
| 0x800705b4 | Timeout or operation taking too long |
| 0x80131500 | Microsoft Store connection or cache issue |
See Microsoft’s 0x80131500 in Microsoft Store guidance and Windows Update troubleshooting for context. These codes do not have one universal fix.
If the error mentions Gaming Services
Do not blindly run old PowerShell or Registry scripts copied from forums. A command that was valid for one Windows build may be inappropriate for another, and mass re-registration can affect unrelated Store apps. Preserve the exact Gaming Services error, your Windows version, and whether ordinary Store apps install normally, then use current official Xbox or Microsoft support for the matching build.
When to escalate
Contact Microsoft or Xbox Support when repair and Windows servicing checks fail, the error is licensing- or account-specific, or the PC is managed. Provide:
Quick Recap
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition and version
- Xbox app and Microsoft Store versions, if visible
- The complete error code and the screen where it appears
- Whether other Store apps install
- Whether the PC is personal, work-managed, or school-managed
- Whether only Xbox games fail or all Store downloads fail
