Do PS5s Have DisplayPort? What Works, What Doesn’t, and Which Adapter You Need

PS5 has no native DisplayPort output. Here is how HDMI-to-DisplayPort conversion works, which features may be lost, and why direct HDMI is usually the safer choice.

No. PS5 consoles have no native or documented DisplayPort output; their display connection is HDMI. Sony supports HDMI 2.1 features including up to 4K at 120 Hz, HDR, VRR and ALLM on compatible equipment. A DisplayPort-only monitor can sometimes work through an active, directional HDMI-source-to-DisplayPort-display converter, but 120 Hz, HDR, VRR, ALLM, audio and HDCP support must be verified for that specific converter. For the most reliable console setup, choose a monitor with a suitable HDMI input.

Does the PS5 itself have a DisplayPort socket?

No. PS5, PS5 Slim, PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro consoles use an HDMI output for video. A DisplayPort socket on a monitor is an input on the monitor, not an indication that the console has DisplayPort. The PS5’s USB ports are intended for accessories and storage, not general-purpose DisplayPort video output.

Sony’s setup guidance treats the connected screen as an HDMI device and recommends connecting the console directly by HDMI. See Sony’s PS5 4K-resolution and video-output guide.

What the PS5 can output over HDMI

  • Up to 4K at 120 Hz: Requires a compatible game, display, HDMI cable and settings. HDMI 2.1 is the appropriate connection for a 4K/120 Hz target.
  • 1440p: The console includes a test mode for 1440p SDR/HDR at 60 or 120 Hz and supported VRR output.
  • VRR: Available with compatible HDMI displays; results vary by display and signal mode.
  • ALLM: Available through the PS5’s HDMI video-output controls when the display supports it.
  • HDR: Requires a compatible display and a signal path that successfully negotiates HDR.
  • 8K: Sony limits 8K output to consoles in the CFI-7000 model group, including PS5 Pro hardware. It requires an 8K/60 Hz display with Display Stream Compression, and VRR is disabled in 8K mode.

Check the console’s video settings

  1. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
  2. Review Current Video Output Signal.
  3. Leave Resolution on Automatic, or select a mode supported by the display.
  4. For 1440p, choose Test 1440p Output.
  5. Enable 120 Hz Output when the display and game support it.
  6. Enable VRR and configure ALLM under the same video-output menu when applicable.

Use the HDMI cable supplied with the console first. If you need a replacement for an HDMI 2.1 mode, Sony recommends an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for that bandwidth.

Can a PS5 work with a DisplayPort-only monitor?

Sometimes, but only with an active converter designed for the correct direction:

PS5 HDMI output → active HDMI-to-DisplayPort converter → monitor DisplayPort input

Look for all of these specifications:

  • “HDMI source to DisplayPort display” wording.
  • Explicitly active conversion, not a passive cable.
  • Unidirectional operation with the HDMI plug connected to the PS5.
  • Support for your exact resolution and refresh-rate timing.
  • HDCP compatibility if protected games or media are involved.
  • USB power requirements and audio support.

StarTech’s 148B-HDMI-DP-8K is an example of an active, one-way HDMI 2.1-source-to-DisplayPort 1.4-display adapter that requires USB power and advertises 4K/120 Hz among its supported modes. Its computer-oriented specifications are not a Sony guarantee that it will work with every PS5. By contrast, Cable Matters’ uni-directional HDMI-to-DisplayPort model states that it does not support HDR or game consoles including PS5, illustrating why the exact model matters.

What features survive HDMI-to-DisplayPort conversion?

Feature Direct HDMI connection HDMI-to-DisplayPort converter
Basic picture Yes, with a compatible display Often possible; model-dependent
1080p/60 Hz Yes Usually the easiest target
1440p/60 Hz Yes, if the monitor supports it Possible; verify timing support
1440p/120 Hz Possible with a suitable display Model-dependent
4K/60 Hz Yes with suitable HDMI bandwidth Requires a converter rated for the mode
4K/120 Hz Yes with compatible HDMI 2.1 equipment Do not assume; check the exact adapter and monitor
HDR Supported with compatible equipment Uncertain; EDID and adapter support can force SDR
VRR Supported on compatible HDMI displays Uncertain; Sony does not guarantee it through third-party converters
ALLM Supported with a compatible HDMI display Uncertain
Audio Handled by the HDMI/display setup Adapter and monitor dependent
240 Hz PS5 output No No

An adapter’s “8K” label is not proof of PS5 compatibility, VRR, HDR or 120 Hz operation. Older HDMI 1.4-to-DisplayPort products can be limited to 4K/30 Hz; for example, StarTech’s HD2DPMM3M is unsuitable for a 4K/120 Hz goal.

Amazon Basics DisplayPort to HDMI Cable, Uni-Directional, Gold-Plated, Video and Audio, 3 Foot, Black Temp
  • IMPORTANT: This cable is not USB-A compatible. Signal direction is one-way only: DisplayPort (computer) → HDMI (display)
  • IN THE BOX: 3-foot DisplayPort to HDMI cable
  • COMPATIBILITY: Transmits audio and video from DisplayPort enabled computer to HDMI display; NOT compatible with a USB port; does NOT work with Thunderbolt Dock; does NOT support LVDS signal sources such as audio/video players
  • PERFORMANCE: Supports uncompressed digital audio channels (7.1, 5.1, or 2) and video resolutions up to 4K@30Hz
  • UNI-DIRECTIONAL: From DisplayPort to HDMI only (not bi-directional)

Why 120 Hz is not automatic

Both the converter and monitor must accept the exact signal the PS5 negotiates. A converter may display 4K/60 Hz but fail at 4K/120 Hz, or work at 1440p/120 Hz while rejecting 4K. The monitor must also accept that timing through its DisplayPort input. Verify the manufacturer’s detailed timing table rather than relying on “8K” marketing.

The PS5 does not use a monitor’s full PC refresh rate. Sony’s PlayStation 27-inch gaming monitor is rated up to 240 Hz, yet its listing specifies up to 120 Hz when connected to a PS5. It has two HDMI inputs and one DisplayPort input for multi-device use. See the official monitor listing.

Should you use an adapter or buy a different monitor?

Use direct HDMI when

  • The monitor has an HDMI input that supports your desired mode.
  • You need the lowest number of compatibility variables.
  • 4K/120 Hz, HDR, VRR, ALLM or HDCP is important.

An adapter can make sense when

  • You already own an expensive DisplayPort-only monitor.
  • Your target is primarily a basic 1080p or 1440p image.
  • The converter is explicitly active, directional and returnable.
  • You accept that advanced features require separate testing.

Replace the monitor when

  • You want dependable 4K/120 Hz and PS5 VRR.
  • The converter costs a substantial portion of a suitable HDMI monitor.
  • The existing display has weak HDR, scaling, HDCP or console compatibility.

If you are shopping for a monitor now, HDMI compatibility is the lower-risk choice. HDMI 2.0 models can often provide 1080p/120 Hz, 1440p/120 Hz or 4K/60 Hz, depending on their specifications. HDMI 2.1 is the better fit for 4K/120 Hz and the broadest chance of retaining console features. A monitor can still include DisplayPort for a PC.

How to install and test a converter

  1. Confirm that the monitor has no usable HDMI input for the required mode.
  2. Connect the converter’s HDMI plug to the PS5 and its DisplayPort output to the monitor.
  3. Attach the converter’s USB power cable to the required power source.
  4. Select DisplayPort as the monitor’s input.
  5. Start the PS5 and inspect Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Current Video Output Signal.
  6. Test 1080p/60 Hz first, then 1440p and 120 Hz separately.
  7. Test HDR and VRR independently; an image alone does not prove either feature works.

If the screen stays blank

  • Power-cycle the PS5, converter and monitor.
  • Reconnect USB power before reconnecting the video cables.
  • Temporarily disable 120 Hz and VRR, then retry at 1080p/60 Hz.
  • Connect the PS5 directly to an HDMI display to confirm the console and cable.
  • Check HDCP support and whether the monitor accepts the negotiated timing.
  • Remove passive adapters or chains of converters; replace the converter with a correctly directional model if necessary.

Other PS5 connectivity extras

DisplayPort conversion is not the only way to use a PS5 away from a television. Remote Play streams the console to a compatible device over a network, but it is not a DisplayPort output and games requiring certain peripherals, including PS VR2, are not compatible. Details are available on Sony’s Remote Play page.

The console also provides USB ports for peripherals and storage, Ethernet and Wi-Fi networking, and support for PlayStation Link accessories. None of these changes the native display path: video leaves the PS5 through HDMI.

The practical verdict

A PS5 does not have DisplayPort. Connect it directly to a monitor’s HDMI input whenever possible, using the included cable or a compliant Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.1 modes. An active HDMI-source-to-DisplayPort-display converter can rescue an existing DisplayPort-only monitor, but it is a workaround: verify each desired mode and do not assume that a working picture includes 120 Hz, HDR, VRR, ALLM or audio.
