Alexa cannot natively pair with a PS5 or PS4 to control games, menus, or controller buttons. The reliable arrangement is Alexa → compatible TV → HDMI-CEC → PlayStation. Alexa controls the television’s power, volume, and HDMI input; HDMI-CEC may then wake or display the console, depending on your TV, console settings, firmware, and power state.
If you need genuine remote control of the console, use Sony’s PS Remote Play instead.
What “connect Alexa to PS5 or PS4” actually means
There are three different setups that are often confused:
Direct PlayStation control
There is no documented first-party Alexa pairing or PlayStation skill that lets Alexa navigate PS5 or PS4 menus, launch games, press controller buttons, or control gameplay. Sony’s official console support points users to Remote Play for remote operation: PS5 support and Remote Play.

TV control
On a supported television, Alexa can turn the TV on or off, adjust volume, and select an HDMI input. This is the practical hands-free method for reaching a PlayStation.
Remote Play
Remote Play gives you actual console control from a supported phone, computer, Mac, or Android TV. Alexa is not the controller in this arrangement.
What you need
- A PS5 or PS4 connected to the TV by HDMI.
- An Echo or another Alexa-enabled device, plus the Alexa app.
- A television with a supported Alexa integration, or a compatible TV-control platform.
- HDMI-CEC support on the TV and HDMI Device Link support on the console.
- Internet access and, where required, the TV and Alexa device on the expected network and account region.
“Smart TV” does not automatically mean Alexa-compatible. Sony models may use either the TV Control with Smart Speakers app with the Sony’s TV skill, or TV Control Setup with Amazon Alexa with Sony’s TV – Basic. Check which app is installed on your TV before enabling a skill. See Sony’s TV skill, Sony’s TV – Basic, and Sony’s setup notes at Sony support.
Step 1: Connect the PlayStation to the TV
- Plug the PS5 or PS4 HDMI OUT port into a TV HDMI IN port.
- Turn on the TV and select that input manually.
- Confirm that the PlayStation picture appears.
- Write down the input number, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
Sony’s hardware instructions cover PS5 connections and PS4 connections. For a PS5 using 4K, HDR, or 120 Hz, connect directly to the TV when possible. Older receivers, switches, and capture devices can affect HDMI 2.1 and signal compatibility; Sony explains these considerations at its 4K resolution guide.

Step 2: Set up the TV’s Alexa integration
- Open the TV’s Home screen and launch the applicable Sony TV control app, if present.
- Follow the on-screen account-linking process. This may involve signing in or creating a Sony account, naming the TV, and selecting the Alexa device.
- In the Alexa app, open More → Skills & Games.
- Search for the official skill matching the TV app, enable it, and sign in with the same account.
- Use device discovery. Amazon’s Sony instructions may place linking controls under Manage in TV & Video.
Menus and availability vary by model, firmware, language, and region. For non-Sony TVs, use the manufacturer’s official Alexa instructions; do not assume HDMI input control is supported.
Step 3: Test TV commands
Use the TV name you assigned during setup:
- “Alexa, turn on [TV name].”
- “Alexa, turn off [TV name].”
- “Alexa, switch [TV name] to HDMI 1.”
- “Alexa, set [TV name] volume to 15.”
Accepted wording differs between skills and models. These commands operate the TV, not the PlayStation. Amazon’s documented Sony examples include power, volume, and HDMI-input commands: Sony’s TV and Sony’s TV – Basic.
Step 4: Try HDMI-CEC to wake or display the console
HDMI-CEC lets devices exchange power and input signals. TV manufacturers give it different names, including Anynet+, BRAVIA Sync, Simplink, VIERA Link, EasyLink, and HDMI Control. PlayStation calls its setting HDMI Device Link.
On commonly encountered software versions, check:
- PS5: Settings → System → HDMI → Enable HDMI Device Link.
- PS4: Settings → System → Enable HDMI Device Link.
Also enable the corresponding HDMI-CEC option in the TV settings. Labels and locations can differ, so search the TV menu for “CEC,” “device link,” or the brand name.

- Leave the console in Rest Mode rather than fully powered off.
- Ask Alexa to turn on the TV.
- Ask Alexa to switch to the PlayStation’s HDMI input.
- Check whether the console wakes and shows its home screen.
CEC is not a guaranteed Alexa-to-PlayStation bridge. A TV may change inputs without waking the console, or wake behavior may depend on the TV port and console power state. If the console remains off, turn it on with the controller and continue using Alexa for TV power and input switching.
PS5 and PS4 differences
PS5
PS5 Remote Play can wake a console from Rest Mode when Enable Remote Play is on and Stay Connected to the Internet plus Enable Turning on PS5 from Network are enabled under Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode.
For media-only control, Sony’s PS5 Media Remote can navigate PS5 apps and control TV power and volume. It is not an Alexa device and is not compatible with PS4: Sony’s Media Remote support.
PS4
PS4 Remote Play additionally requires Settings → Account Management → Activate as Your Primary PS4. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS4 from Network under Settings → Power Save Settings → Set Features Available in Rest Mode.

Use Remote Play for real console control
PS5 setup
- On PS5, open Settings → System → Remote Play and enable Enable Remote Play.
- Enable the Rest Mode network and wake options described above.
- Install PS Remote Play on a supported device.
- Sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the console.
- Select the PS5 when it appears.
PS4 setup
- Open Settings → Remote Play Connection Settings and enable Enable Remote Play.
- Activate the console as your primary PS4.
- Enable both Rest Mode network options.
- Install PS Remote Play and sign in with the same account.
- Connect to the PS4.
Sony recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download, with 15 Mbps or higher recommended for better performance. Keep the console and app updated. Some games and features are incompatible; Blu-ray/DVD playback, some video services, VR functions, Share Play, and other features cannot be used simultaneously with Remote Play. A DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 controller may be required. See Sony’s Remote Play setup, connection troubleshooting, and Sony’s port information at UDP 8572 guidance.
Commands that do and do not work
| Command | Likely result | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| “Alexa, turn on the TV” | Turns on a compatible TV | Does not guarantee console power-on |
| “Alexa, switch to HDMI 2” | Selects HDMI 2 | TV skill controls the input |
| “Alexa, turn off the TV” | Turns off the TV | CEC response from the console varies |
| “Alexa, set the TV volume to 15” | Changes TV volume | Model and skill support vary |
| “Alexa, launch [game] on PS5” | Usually no PlayStation action | No documented native game-launch control |
| “Alexa, move right on PS5” | No native action | Requires unsupported third-party automation, if possible |
Troubleshooting
Alexa cannot find the TV
- Confirm the exact TV Alexa app and matching official skill.
- Check account region, internet connection, and TV firmware.
- Run device discovery again.
- Use an unambiguous TV name; avoid naming it “PlayStation.”
The input changes but the console stays off
- Enable CEC on the TV and HDMI Device Link on the console.
- Use Rest Mode.
- Turn on the TV before selecting the console input.
- Try another HDMI port.
- Connect directly to the TV instead of through a receiver or switch.
- Update TV and console software.
This can be normal: Alexa may be controlling the TV exactly as designed while the console still requires its controller.
Alexa reports success but nothing changes
- Check the TV name and HDMI number.
- Try the skill’s alternate phrasing.
- Ensure the correct TV is the active Alexa device.
- Check whether the TV is in a low-power state or the model lacks that command.
- Temporarily bypass receivers, soundbars, switches, and capture devices.
Remote Play will not connect
- Verify Remote Play, Rest Mode wake settings, and console internet access.
- Use the same PlayStation account on both devices.
- Confirm PS4 primary-console activation.
- Update the console and Remote Play app.
- Check that the connection meets Sony’s 5 Mbps baseline.
- Investigate router restrictions, including the UDP 8572 information in Sony’s troubleshooting material.
Which option fits your goal?
| Goal | Best approach | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Turn on the gaming setup | Alexa-compatible TV plus HDMI-CEC | Console wake is not guaranteed |
| Switch from cable or streaming to PlayStation | TV Alexa skill | Controls input, not console menus |
| Play remotely | PS Remote Play | Needs network, account, compatible device, and often a controller |
| Navigate PS5 media apps | PS5 Media Remote | Not compatible with PS4 |
| Automate a room | Alexa routines with compatible TV and accessories | Never cut power to a running console |
Do not use a smart plug as a substitute for shutting down a PS5 or PS4. Removing power abruptly can risk data corruption and does not provide game or menu control.

Can Alexa turn on a PS4?
The same indirect method may work: Alexa controls the TV and HDMI-CEC may wake the PS4. Results depend on the TV, HDMI port, CEC settings, and console power state.
Can Alexa launch PS5 games or control the menu?
There is no documented first-party Alexa method for launching PS5 games, navigating the home screen, or pressing controller buttons.
Can I use Alexa with PS4 Remote Play?
Alexa is not the Remote Play controller. Install PS Remote Play on a supported device and use a compatible controller when required.
Do I need a smart TV?
You need a TV or intermediary that officially supports Alexa control. A television being labeled “smart” does not guarantee Alexa power or HDMI-input commands.
Is a smart plug safe for a PlayStation?
No. Cutting power to a running PS5 or PS4 is not a safe software shutdown and can risk data corruption.
Can I use a PS5 Media Remote with PS4?
No. Sony states that the PS5 Media Remote is not compatible with PS4 consoles.
The Bottom Line
For hands-free PS5 or PS4 access, connect the console to an Alexa-compatible TV, enable the TV skill, and try HDMI-CEC. Expect Alexa to handle TV power, volume, and input—not PlayStation games or menus. Use PS Remote Play when you need actual remote console control.
