A Join button or game invite appears only when the game supports Discord Game Invites or join-capable Rich Presence, Discord detects the game, activity sharing permits visibility, and the player is in a joinable party or lobby. If those conditions are met, friends can join from your profile or from an invite posted in a DM or text channel.
Before you start
- Use the Discord desktop app where possible; web, mobile and console behavior can differ.
- Confirm that the specific game supports Discord Game Invites or compatible Rich Presence. Detection alone does not add invite support.
- Launch the game at least once so Discord can detect and register it.
- Enter a party, lobby or session that accepts additional players and has an available slot.
- Check the game’s ownership, account, platform, edition, region, cross-play and privacy requirements for both players.
Discord’s current Game Invites documentation identifies Activity Privacy and Registered Games as the main player-side checks.
Turn on Discord activity sharing
- Open Discord and select the User Settings gear beside your username.
- Under Activity Settings, open Activity Privacy (Discord may group related controls under Activity Sharing in another client version).
- Enable Display current activity as a status message.
- Open Registered Games and verify that the game is listed and enabled.
- Review any friend, server or voice-channel audience controls, then fully launch or relaunch the game.
These settings control whether people can see your activity. They do not give an unsupported game the ability to create a join session.
Send a game invite in a DM or text channel
- Open a DM, group DM or server text channel.
- Select the + button beside the message box.
- Choose Play when Discord detects a supported game and exposes its invite action.
- Post the game invite.
- The recipient selects Join; Discord then launches the game or passes the request to its party or lobby system.
The Play option is conditional. It may be absent when the game is not detected, the integration does not provide invites, activity is hidden or the current session cannot accept players.

Let a friend join from your Discord profile
- Launch the supported game and enter a joinable party, lobby or session.
- Have your friend open your mini-profile or full profile.
- They select Join if Discord exposes the control.
- Discord opens the game or hands the join information to it, and the game completes the connection using its own multiplayer system.
Discord says the profile-based Join action appears only when the game supports it and the player is currently joinable: official Game Invites guidance.
Use Ask to Join when direct joining is unavailable
- Your friend opens your profile and selects Ask to Join, if that action is available.
- You receive a request through Discord or the game’s supported prompt.
- Accept or reject it.
- After acceptance, Discord or the game sends an invite or routes the friend into the session.
Ask to Join is a host-approved alternative, not the same feature as Join. Discord also documents Spectate separately for games that support viewing without entering the session.

Who can see or use the join option?
Activity sharing determines who can see that you are playing. Depending on your configuration, friends and people sharing the same voice channel may receive joining options. Discord can also prompt you to align activity visibility with profile privacy. The game’s own party privacy, block list, parental controls, invite permissions and cross-play rules remain decisive; a Discord friend is not automatically a friend in the game’s account system. Why the Join button or Play option is missing

Unsupported or partially supported games
A title can display basic “Playing” activity without exposing party data, a join secret, supported-platform data or a compatible launch route. Discord cannot add those capabilities itself. Platform and edition differences
PC versus console, Steam versus another launcher, different editions or regions, disabled cross-play and unlinked console accounts can all block a join. These are game-specific conditions, not universal Discord requirements. Mobile Discord may display or accept some invites without being able to launch the PC game, while console behavior depends on the game’s integration and linked platform account.
Discord invite versus the game’s own invite
Discord is most convenient when friends are already chatting and the game provides a reliable join handoff. The in-game social menu is usually the better fallback when Discord only shows activity, the lobby is private, the title requires an account-specific invite or the launch link fails. A lobby code or invite link can also work, but share it only with the intended players.

Developer note: what makes joining possible
For players, Rich Presence is not a setting to enable; it is the game-side integration that supplies party information, join data, supported platforms and an action Discord can invoke. Discord’s Social SDK documents programmatic invitations with Client::SendActivityInvite, while integrations may configure a deep-link URL in the Developer Portal. Quick checklist
- Does this specific game support Discord Game Invites?
- Is Display current activity as a status message enabled?
- Is the game listed and enabled in Registered Games?
- Has the game been launched at least once and detected by Discord?
- Is the host in a joinable lobby with room?
- Does the friend meet the game’s ownership, account, platform and cross-play requirements?
- Do Discord and in-game privacy settings allow that person to join?
- If Discord still fails, can the game’s own invite system connect you?
