Does Xbox One Convert DTS to Dolby? How Games, Blu-ray and HDMI Really Handle Audio

Xbox One does not automatically convert every DTS signal to Dolby. Your source, output mode, connection and receiver-decoding setting determine whether you get Dolby Digital, DTS, PCM or an untouched Blu-ray bitstream.

Sometimes—but not universally. Xbox One can re-encode console audio as Dolby Digital when Dolby Digital is selected. It can also output DTS Digital Surround, send uncompressed multichannel PCM over HDMI, or pass a Blu-ray’s original audio bitstream to a compatible receiver. The result depends on the source, Xbox settings, connection and the device doing the decoding.

Why a receiver may show Dolby when the source says DTS

An AV receiver’s front-panel label identifies the signal it receives, not necessarily the format used inside a game or on a disc. Four different operations are often confused:

  • Decoding: the Xbox or receiver expands DTS or Dolby data into PCM audio.
  • Re-encoding: decoded multichannel audio is compressed again into another format, such as Dolby Digital 5.1.
  • Bitstream passthrough: the Xbox forwards encoded data so the receiver performs the decoding.
  • PCM output: the Xbox sends already-decoded, uncompressed audio over HDMI.

Consequently, a Dolby Digital label does not prove that a game or disc originally contained Dolby audio, and a PCM label does not mean lower quality.

What each Xbox One audio setting sends

Xbox setting Signal sent Typical receiver display Best fit
Stereo uncompressed Two-channel PCM PCM or Stereo TV speakers or stereo equipment
5.1 uncompressed 5.1-channel PCM over HDMI Multichannel PCM/LPCM HDMI receivers accepting 5.1 PCM
7.1 uncompressed 7.1-channel PCM over HDMI Multichannel PCM/LPCM HDMI receivers accepting 7.1 PCM
Bitstream out + Dolby Digital Dolby Digital compressed bitstream Dolby Digital Optical or legacy surround hardware
Bitstream out + DTS Digital Surround DTS compressed bitstream DTS Equipment supporting DTS 5.1
Bitstream out + Dolby Atmos for home theater Dolby spatial-audio output over HDMI Dolby Atmos when supported Atmos-capable HDMI receiver or soundbar
Bitstream out + DTS:X for home theater DTS:X output over HDMI DTS:X when supported DTS:X-capable HDMI receiver or soundbar

Microsoft lists the Xbox spatial-audio options and notes that Dolby Atmos and DTS:X for home theater are HDMI-only: Microsoft spatial-sound documentation. DTS says DTS Sound Unbound enables the DTS:X for Home Theater choice, which is then selected at Settings → General → Volume & audio output → Bitstream out: DTS Sound Unbound FAQ.

Games and apps: the selected output format wins

Games commonly mix or render audio internally and then rely on the console to deliver the result in the user-selected output mode. A game’s advertised DTS support is therefore not identical to the signal leaving HDMI or optical.

  • With Dolby Digital selected, multichannel console audio can be encoded as Dolby Digital, even if the game’s internal assets or mix used another format.
  • With DTS Digital Surround selected, compatible console audio is sent as DTS 5.1.
  • With 5.1 or 7.1 uncompressed, the receiver gets PCM rather than DTS or Dolby. This avoids an additional lossy Dolby/DTS compression stage, provided the HDMI equipment accepts the channel count.

“Bitstream out” is not an automatic command to preserve whatever format a game used. The format selected beside it controls system and game output.

Blu-ray playback is a separate path

For Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Xbox One supports a receiver-decoding workflow. Xbox’s announcement of Blu-ray bitstream passthrough explains that audio data can be passed to compatible equipment; the relevant control is Let my receiver decode audio under Disc & Blu-ray settings: Xbox Wire announcement.

When passthrough is functioning, a DTS-HD Master Audio track can remain a DTS-family bitstream, while Dolby TrueHD or a compatible Dolby Atmos track can remain Dolby-family data for the receiver to decode. The receiver must support the specific codec and the HDMI chain must carry it. If the Xbox or another device decodes the track first, the receiver may display PCM instead; that can still be lossless.

The disc’s selected track matters

Discs may contain DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, basic DTS, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital, stereo and commentary tracks. Select the intended track in the disc menu. A receiver showing “DTS” may be receiving only a DTS core, not DTS-HD Master Audio or DTS:X.

HDMI versus optical (TOSLINK)

Connection Practical capabilities Important limits
HDMI 5.1/7.1 PCM; Dolby TrueHD; DTS-HD High Resolution/Master Audio; modern Atmos and DTS:X paths Every device in the chain must support the desired format
Optical Compressed Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1 No 5.1/7.1 PCM, lossless Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, full lossless Atmos or DTS:X

The Xbox One family specification sheet lists HDMI PCM and passthrough capabilities alongside S/PDIF Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1: Xbox One family specification sheet. Optical instructions apply to Xbox One-family consoles; Xbox Series X|S does not include an optical output, as Microsoft’s spatial-audio documentation notes.

Recommended setup paths

HDMI receiver or soundbar for conventional surround

  1. Open Settings → General → Volume & audio output.
  2. Choose 5.1 uncompressed or 7.1 uncompressed if the receiver accepts multichannel PCM.
  3. If compressed output is required, choose Bitstream out, then Dolby Digital or DTS Digital Surround.
  4. Check the receiver’s incoming-signal display.

Optical receiver or headset base station

  1. Connect the Xbox One optical output to the receiver or headset base.
  2. Go to Settings → General → Volume & audio output.
  3. Set optical audio to Bitstream out.
  4. Choose Dolby Digital or DTS Digital Surround, according to the equipment’s support.
  5. Confirm that the device locks to 5.1 rather than stereo.

Blu-ray receiver decoding

  1. Connect the Xbox directly to an HDMI-capable receiver or processor when possible.
  2. Install or update the Blu-ray Player app.
  3. Open Disc & Blu-ray settings and enable Let my receiver decode audio, where available.
  4. Select the desired soundtrack on the disc.
  5. Verify the receiver’s codec display.

Dolby Atmos for home theater

Use HDMI to an Atmos-capable receiver or soundbar. Select Bitstream out → Dolby Atmos for home theater and install or configure Dolby Access if prompted. Optical cannot carry the full home-theater Atmos path.

DTS:X for home theater

Use HDMI to a DTS:X-capable receiver or soundbar. Install DTS Sound Unbound if required, then choose Settings → General → Volume & audio output → Bitstream out → DTS:X for Home Theater. Confirm DTS:X on the receiving device.

Choosing the right mode for your equipment

  • HDMI receiver supporting PCM: choose uncompressed 5.1 or 7.1 to avoid lossy game-audio re-encoding.
  • Optical or older receiver: use Dolby Digital for broad compatibility or DTS Digital Surround if the device supports it.
  • Atmos system: use HDMI and the Atmos home-theater option; verify the receiver or bar reports Atmos.
  • DTS:X system: use HDMI, DTS Sound Unbound when required, and the DTS:X home-theater option.
  • TV-only setup: the TV may downmix or restrict output; its digital-audio setting becomes part of the format chain.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The receiver says Dolby Digital although the disc soundtrack says DTS

  • System audio may be set to Dolby Digital.
  • Let my receiver decode audio may be disabled.
  • The Xbox may be connected through a TV that converts the signal for optical or ARC.
  • The receiver may not support the selected DTS variant.
  • A Dolby track or commentary track may be selected on the disc.
  • The receiver display may show a processing mode rather than the exact incoming codec.

Test with a direct Xbox-to-receiver HDMI connection and inspect the Blu-ray app setting and disc track.

The receiver says PCM

This usually indicates uncompressed Xbox output or decoding performed before transmission. PCM can be uncompressed and lossless; the label is not a quality ranking.

Only stereo is produced

  • Recheck HDMI audio and headset-audio settings.
  • Check whether the TV is downmixing before sending audio onward.
  • Confirm the receiver input assignment and optical device’s 5.1 support.
  • Verify that the content itself contains multichannel audio.

Atmos or DTS:X is missing

  • Confirm HDMI rather than optical.
  • Power on and select the compatible receiver or soundbar during the Xbox capability check.
  • Check Dolby Access or DTS Sound Unbound installation.
  • Remove a TV, switch or splitter that cannot pass the format, or test a direct HDMI route.
  • Verify the cable and receiver HDMI port support the required video and audio features.

DTS works on a disc but not in games

That is expected when Blu-ray passthrough is enabled but game audio uses the console’s selected system output. These are separate paths.

Optical outputs Dolby but not DTS

Select DTS Digital Surround, confirm the receiver or headset base supports DTS over optical, and bypass any TV intermediary that may reject or convert DTS.

How to interpret common labels

  • Dolby Digital: generally lossy 5.1; it does not prove Atmos.
  • DTS: may mean basic DTS Digital Surround or a DTS core, not DTS-HD Master Audio or DTS:X.
  • Multichannel PCM/LPCM: already-decoded, uncompressed multichannel audio.
  • Dolby Atmos or DTS:X: an immersive object-based presentation whose carrier and support depend on the HDMI chain.

Xbox One, One S and One X can differ in hardware and firmware behavior, and a TV-mediated path can change the result. Do not apply Xbox Series X|S optical assumptions to an Xbox One.
