Verdict: PS5 Pro is a worthwhile upgrade only when the games you play support its enhancements and your TV can display the resulting resolution and frame-rate gains. It is less compelling for owners of a standard PS5 who mainly play unenhanced titles, use a 60Hz display, or rely on physical discs. Sony’s console is all-digital, so a Disc Drive is an additional purchase.
What PS5 Pro actually adds
Sony positions PS5 Pro as a 2TB console with AI-assisted PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), advanced ray tracing and higher frame-rate options in compatible games. These are not universal upgrades: Sony says enhancements vary by game, and its product page lists more than 100 enhanced PS5 titles.

Sony advertises 4K output at 60fps, or up to 120fps in compatible games with a suitable display. Those figures are capabilities, not a guarantee that every game will run at those settings.
Who will notice the difference?
Players with supported games
The strongest case is a library built around games that offer a PS5 Pro mode. Developers may use the extra GPU and ray-tracing capability to combine visual settings with a higher or steadier frame rate, while PSSR reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower internal rendering resolution. The benefit is therefore title-specific rather than a blanket improvement to every PS5 game.

Owners of a suitable display
A 4K television or monitor with a 120Hz input is the practical target for PS5 Pro’s headline features. On a 60Hz screen, you cannot see a 120fps presentation, although a supported game may still deliver image-quality or ray-tracing improvements. Check your display’s HDMI input mode, refresh-rate support and whether its 4K/120Hz setting is enabled.
People sensitive to image quality
PSSR is intended to improve fine detail and reduce reconstruction artifacts. On March 16, 2026, Sony announced an upgraded PSSR rollout claiming improved image stability, clearer fine detail and more consistent performance in supported titles. The optional “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting can apply the updated version to existing PSSR-compatible games, but the visible result still depends on each game.
PS5 Pro versus a standard PS5
| Decision factor | PS5 Pro | Standard PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Enhanced visuals and ray tracing | Available in supported games; implementation varies by title | Standard PS5 modes and settings |
| Frame-rate target | Up to 120fps in compatible enhanced games, display permitting | Depends on the game’s standard PS5 modes |
| Upscaling | PSSR in supported games; updated system version available from March 16, 2026 | No PS5 Pro PSSR features |
| Built-in storage | 2TB custom SSD | Varies by PS5 model |
| Disc support | All-digital as sold; compatible Disc Drive is separate | Depends on whether you own the disc or digital edition |
| PS4 compatibility | Over 8,500 PS4 games, with a small number incompatible according to Sony | Broad PS4 backward compatibility, subject to the same title exclusions |
Do you need to buy a disc drive?
Yes, if you want to play boxed PS5 or PS4 games, watch 4K Blu-ray or DVD discs, or use an existing physical library. Sony’s US listing describes PS5 Pro as an all-digital console. The compatible Disc Drive is sold separately, and an internet connection is required to pair it during setup. Include the drive in your total cost; the console’s advertised price alone does not represent a disc-ready system.
Sony’s UK compatibility guidance says the compatible PS5 Disc Drive and vertical stand work with PS5 Pro, while older PS5 covers and base components listed on that page do not. Accessory item numbers and availability can differ by region.

Compatibility with your games and accessories
Existing PS5 games
PS5 Pro can play PS5 games, but only titles with a Pro patch or supported enhancement can use the console’s special rendering features. Unenhanced games should be treated as backward-compatible software, not guaranteed visual upgrades.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
PS4 games
Sony says PS5 Pro supports more than 8,500 PS4 games and notes that a small number are incompatible. “Game Boost” can improve the experience for supported PS4 and PS5 software, but Sony does not promise identical results for every title.
Controllers, headsets and other accessories
The package includes one DualSense controller, and PS5 Pro uses the same DualSense control system as PS5. Common PS5 accessories generally depend on their connection method and game support; USB, Bluetooth and audio-device compatibility should be checked for the specific accessory. Sony’s documentation does not guarantee that every connected device will work.

The built-in 2TB SSD is one of PS5 Pro’s practical advantages, although usable capacity is lower after system software. Sony lists Wi‑Fi 7 compatibility, subject to a compatible router and local network conditions, plus wired Ethernet. The technical guide also lists an M.2 SSD expansion connector. Because requirements and compatibility determine which drives are safe, choose an expansion model only after checking Sony’s current specifications for your region.
How to decide if upgrading is sensible
- List your frequently played games. Check each game’s current PS5 Pro enhancement information rather than relying on the console’s general feature list.
- Check your display. Confirm 4K support, 120Hz capability and the correct HDMI input mode if you want the highest advertised output.
- Add the complete hardware cost. Include the Disc Drive if you own physical games and the vertical stand if you want one; both are separate accessories.
- Compare your current PS5. If your existing console already provides a satisfactory 60fps mode and your games lack Pro enhancements, the upgrade may produce little visible value.
- Account for storage. The 2TB SSD reduces the need to uninstall games, but expansion remains possible through the M.2 connector after compatibility checks.
Bottom line
Buy PS5 Pro when your regularly played games have meaningful Pro enhancements, you own a 4K/120Hz-capable display and you value sharper reconstruction, ray tracing or steadier performance enough to pay for them. Keep your current PS5 when most of your library is unenhanced, your display cannot show the targeted improvements, or the separate Disc Drive makes the upgrade poor value. The hardware’s potential is substantial, but the purchase decision is determined by game support and your setup—not by the Pro badge alone.
