Asus’s ROG Strix OLED XG27AQWMG is a real, shipping 26.5-inch 1440p gaming monitor—not a teaser. It combines a 280Hz Tandem WOLED panel, glossy TrueBlack Glossy coating, HDMI 2.1, OLED Care Pro and a three-year warranty that includes panel burn-in coverage. The “$699” figure is not the current US store price shown by Asus: its US listing currently displays $649, though prices and availability can change.

The monitor’s most meaningful advantage over Gigabyte’s MO27Q28G and LG’s 27GX700A-B is the glossy surface and Asus’s OLED-care implementation, not a radically different resolution or refresh-rate class.

What the ROG Strix OLED XG27AQWMG is

The XG27AQWMG is a 16:9, 26.5-inch-viewable monitor with a 2560×1440 QHD resolution and a maximum refresh rate of 280Hz. Asus advertises a 0.03ms response time and uses a fourth-generation Tandem WOLED design. It is not a 4K display; Tandem OLED primarily targets brightness, color volume, efficiency and panel-life improvements while retaining a resolution that is easier to drive at very high frame rates.

Asus announced availability on November 6, 2025. Its product page lists VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification, G-SYNC Compatible and Adaptive-Sync support, OLED Care Pro and a Neo Proximity Sensor. The US specification page lists a three-year warranty including panel burn-in coverage. See Asus’s availability announcement, product page and US specifications.

What Tandem OLED changes

Tandem OLED stacks multiple emissive layers so the panel can produce light more efficiently. Asus describes this as a fourth-generation WOLED design and claims up to 15% higher peak brightness, 25% larger color volume and 60% longer OLED lifespan than previous-generation WOLED panels. Those percentages are Asus comparisons, not universal independent measurements, and results can vary by picture mode, brightness limiter and firmware.

Gigabyte similarly describes its Primary RGB Tandem OLED implementation as reaching up to 1,500 nits HDR peak brightness and 99.5% DCI-P3 coverage. LG calls the 27GX700A-B its first gaming monitor using fourth-generation OLED with Primary RGB Tandem technology and also quotes peak brightness of up to 1,500 nits. Sources: Asus, Gigabyte and LG.

ASUS ROG XG27AQDMG 27 Inch 1440p 240Hz Glossy OLED Gaming Monitor
  • Immersive QHD OLED Display: 26.5-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) glossy WOLED gaming monitor with 240 Hz refresh rate and 0.03 ms response time for immersive gaming
  • Advanced Cooling and OLED Protection: Highly efficient custom heatsink, advanced airflow design, and ASUS OLED Care functions to reduce the risk of burn-in
  • ROG OLED Anti-flicker Technology: ROG-exclusive OLED Anti-flicker technology helps reduce the flicker during refresh-rate fluctuations
  • Third-Generation WOLED Panel: Third-generation WOLED technology provides brighter full white windows, clearer text, and improved motion clarity
  • Uniform Brightness Setting: Optional uniform brightness setting ensures consistent luminance levels across the display

A 1,500-nit specification describes small HDR highlights under specified conditions. OLED brightness management can reduce luminance when a large portion of the screen is white, so it should not be read as sustained full-screen brightness comparable to a powerful LCD or mini-LED display.

Why the glossy coating matters

The XG27AQWMG uses a glossy TrueBlack Glossy surface. In a dark or controlled room, glossy treatment can preserve perceived contrast and fine image clarity by avoiding the haze introduced by some matte anti-glare layers. Reflections become the trade-off: windows, lamps and ceiling lights can be conspicuous on dark scenes.

  • Controlled gaming room: glossy OLED is more likely to show the deep blacks and crisp highlights that make the panel attractive.
  • Bright room or desk facing a window: a matte monitor such as the Gigabyte MO27Q28G or LG 27GX700A-B may be easier to live with.
  • Mixed use: choose based on which problem you notice more—reflections or reduced perceived contrast.

Asus versus Gigabyte and LG

All three models target the same broad class: 27-inch-class, 2560×1440, 280Hz monitors built around LG Display’s fourth-generation Primary RGB Tandem WOLED platform. Shared panel generation does not guarantee identical results; firmware, calibration, heat management, coating and brightness controls can change the experience.

LG 27GX700A-B Fourth-generation Primary RGB Tandem OLED, generally matte G-SYNC Compatible, FreeSync Premium Pro, DisplayHDR True Black 500 and RGB lighting

Gigabyte’s official page lists two HDMI 2.1 inputs, DisplayPort 1.4, USB-C, USB-A, KVM and a height-adjustable stand. Its manual identifies a matte MO27Q28G and glossy MO27Q28GR and lists a 30,000-hour minimum LED-life figure; that figure is not a guarantee against burn-in. See the Gigabyte manual.

LG’s US page specifies 280Hz, 0.03ms, G-SYNC Compatibility, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and DisplayHDR True Black 500 for the 27GX700A-B: LG’s product page.

Image quality is not automatically better on one brand

Independent testing by RTINGS found the Gigabyte MO27Q28G and LG 27GX700A-B performed almost identically overall, with differences attributable to manufacturer tuning. Its tested LG could over-brighten some images, while the tested Gigabyte could crush some SDR midtones and highlights and showed a red tint. Those are test-unit observations, not proof that every retail sample behaves the same. See the RTINGS comparison.

Color-gamut coverage is not color accuracy, and a manufacturer response-time figure is not an independently measured average. The Asus’s strongest visual argument is its glossy finish; it is not evidence that the monitor is categorically superior in every mode.

OLED care, proximity sensing and burn-in risk

Static taskbars, application chrome, game HUDs and channel logos can contribute to image retention and permanent burn-in. OLED compensation and panel-care cycles may run after use and can delay shutdown; disabling them for convenience increases avoidable risk.

ASUS ROG PG32UCDP 32 Inch 4K 240Hz OLED Gaming Monitor
  • Dual Mode Display Technology: 32-inch 4K (3840 x 2160) WOLED gaming monitor with versatile dual mode (4K @ 240 Hz or FHD @ 480 Hz)
  • ROG-Exclusive OLED Anti-Flicker Technology: Helps reduce the flicker during refresh-rate fluctuations for more comfortable viewing during extended gaming sessions
  • Advanced AI Assistant Features: Provides dynamic AI Crosshair, AI Sniper, and AI Visual functions for improved gaming experiences
  • Uniform Brightness Setting: Optional uniform brightness setting ensures consistent luminance levels across the entire display
  • DisplayWidget Center Software: Allows users to easily access OLED Care functions and adjust monitor settings using a mouse

Asus says the Neo Proximity Sensor detects when you move away and switches the display to a black screen. That prevents static desktop content from remaining illuminated while the monitor is unattended. It is a mitigation feature, not a guarantee against wear. OLED longevity also depends on brightness, content, usage time and compensation behavior.

The three-year burn-in warranty reduces financial exposure, but it does not eliminate downtime, claim paperwork, shipping or the possibility of visible wear during ownership. Check the warranty terms, exclusions, claim process and retailer return window for your region.

Is 1440p at 280Hz the right target?

QHD is substantially easier to drive at very high frame rates than 4K. Competitive players with a fast graphics card can benefit from 280Hz when games actually render near that rate. In demanding single-player games, HDR contrast and OLED motion clarity may matter more than the difference between 240Hz and 280Hz.

DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC is sufficient for the listed 1440p/280Hz mode, but the achievable refresh rate depends on the graphics card, cable, game, color settings and selected display mode. No GPU automatically delivers 280 frames per second in every title.

Who should buy the Asus?

Competitive gamers

Buy it when your system can make practical use of very high QHD frame rates and you prefer the clarity of a glossy panel in a controlled room.

HDR and single-player gamers

The Tandem WOLED architecture, OLED blacks and HDR highlights are compelling, but do not assume the 1,500-nit peak applies to large bright scenes.

Mixed gaming and office users

Consider the reflection environment and text-rendering needs carefully. OLED subpixel behavior and brightness limits on large white areas can make a good LCD more comfortable for long office sessions.

Multi-device and laptop users

Gigabyte is the safer choice if confirmed USB-C, KVM and workstation-style connectivity are priorities. Asus’s USB-C and KVM claims need SKU-level verification.

Bright-room buyers

Prefer a matte alternative unless you can control reflections. Glossy OLED can look excellent, but direct light is its clearest weakness.

Price-focused buyers

Compare live landed prices, warranty and return policies. Because the Asus, Gigabyte and LG share the same broad panel generation, a substantially cheaper alternative can offer better value.

Buying checklist

  1. Confirm the exact regional model suffix and current price; Asus’s US listing currently shows $649, not $699.
  2. Check the rear-port layout and manual if USB-C or KVM is essential.
  3. Measure reflections at your desk before choosing glossy over matte.
  4. Verify that your GPU, cable and settings support 1440p at 280Hz.
  5. Read the local burn-in warranty, exclusions, claim process and retailer return window.
  6. Keep OLED-care features and compensation cycles enabled.

Verdict

The XG27AQWMG is most compelling when you specifically want a glossy 1440p/280Hz Tandem OLED, use it in a controlled room and value Asus’s OLED Care Pro, proximity sensing and three-year burn-in coverage. At the current US-listed $649, it deserves serious consideration. It does not automatically justify a premium over Gigabyte or LG: choose Gigabyte for matte treatment, USB-C and KVM, LG when its availability or sale price is better, and a non-OLED LCD or mini-LED when office work, bright-room viewing, 4K resolution or sustained full-screen brightness matters more.
