A dead, unresponsive, drifting, or poorly tracked Quest controller usually has a fix that does not involve factory-resetting the headset. Start by identifying the symptom, checking the controller’s power, and testing it in the Quest home menu. The correct steps depend on whether you have an original Oculus Quest, Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S, or Quest Pro.
“Oculus Quest” is legacy branding; current headsets are sold as Meta Quest. Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S controllers use replaceable AA batteries, while Quest Pro Touch Pro controllers use internal rechargeable batteries and require different charging and reset procedures.
Quick diagnosis
| What you see | Start here |
|---|---|
| No light, vibration, or detection | Install a known-good battery and inspect the contacts |
| Light appears but pairing fails | Restart, then unpair and pair again in the Meta Horizon app |
| Controller tracks but buttons do nothing | Test the home menu, restart, then use the documented Quest 3 reset if applicable |
| Tracking jumps, freezes, or disappears | Improve lighting and clean the headset cameras |
| Works only in one game | Update or reinstall that game and check its control settings |
| Stick drifts or a trigger is stuck | Remove accessories and test in several apps; persistent faults are usually mechanical |
| Controller is hot, swollen, leaking, or cracked | Stop using it and contact Meta support |
Before you begin
- Identify the headset: original Quest, Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S, or Quest Pro.
- Note whether one controller or both are affected.
- Test the controller in the Quest home interface and universal menu.
- Remove third-party shells, grips, straps, and battery accessories.
- Do not factory-reset the headset yet.
Model differences that matter
| Headset | Controller power and hardware | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Original Oculus Quest | Replaceable AA batteries; older controller and software design | Current app labels and pairing behavior may differ |
| Quest 2 | Replaceable AA batteries; external tracking rings | Quest 2 controllers are not interchangeable with Quest 3/3S controllers |
| Quest 3 | Touch Plus controller with a replaceable AA battery; no external tracking ring | Use the Quest 3-specific reset sequence below only when its symptoms fit |
| Quest 3S | Touch Plus controller with a replaceable AA battery | Pairing and firmware behavior can vary by software version |
| Quest Pro | Touch Pro controller with an internal rechargeable battery | Do not insert an AA battery; use its charging dock or cable |
Meta’s Quest 2 safety guide and Quest 3 safety guide distinguish user-replaceable controller batteries from the headset battery, which is not user-serviceable.
18 fixes, in the safest order
1. Check whether only one game is affected
Use the controller in the Quest home screen, universal menu, and a second known-working app. If it works everywhere except one title, update or reinstall that game and inspect its control settings. A game-specific failure is not evidence of a failed controller.

Expected result: Input works outside the affected game.
2. Wake the controller
Press the controller’s Meta/Home or Menu button once, then press a face button or trigger. A dark LED can mean the controller is asleep rather than broken.
Expected result: The controller wakes, vibrates, or appears in the headset.
3. Install a known-good AA battery
For Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S, insert a fresh AA cell with the polarity matching the markings. If possible, test a battery known to work in the other controller. This step does not apply to Quest Pro Touch Pro controllers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsExpected result: The controller wakes or starts pairing.
4. Remove and reinstall the battery
Take out the battery, wait at least 30 seconds, inspect the compartment, and reinstall it firmly. This is a practical way to clear a stuck power state, not a guaranteed official reset interval. The procedure is commonly suggested in Meta community troubleshooting.
5. Inspect contacts and the battery door
- Confirm the battery is not reversed.
- Look for dirt, oxidation, flattened contacts, or a loose door.
- Check whether the cell moves when the controller is gently shaken.
- Stop immediately if the battery is hot, swollen, leaking, or smells burnt.
6. Remove third-party accessories
Temporarily remove silicone covers, charging grips, extended battery packs, and straps that may press buttons or obstruct the battery door. A poorly fitted accessory can interrupt power, prevent full button travel, or interfere with tracking.

7. Restart the headset
Open the normal power menu and choose restart. If the interface is frozen, hold the headset power button until it shuts down or restarts, then boot it again. A restart preserves installed content and should precede a factory reset.

Charge the headset adequately, disconnect unnecessary USB accessories, and retry. Low headset power can complicate pairing and tracking, although it does not replace testing the controller’s own battery or charging system.
9. Improve room lighting
Test in a normally lit room. Avoid complete darkness, direct sunlight aimed at the cameras, rapidly changing LED lighting, highly reflective surfaces, and featureless rooms where the headset cannot establish positional context. Lighting affects tracking, not a controller with no power or no button input.
10. Clean the headset cameras
Wipe the headset’s tracking cameras with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Do not spray cleaner onto the headset or use abrasive material. The headset cameras observe the controller, so cleaning only the controller or its ring will not solve a camera-obstruction problem.
Expected result: The controller stays visible and stable instead of freezing or vanishing.

Hold the awake controller near the headset, keep the headset and phone together, and avoid placing the controller behind furniture or your body. Do not repeatedly press random buttons while the app searches.
12. Unpair and pair it again
In the Meta Horizon mobile app, the labels vary by release, but the route generally is:
- Open the Meta Horizon app and select the headset or device section.
- Open controller or device settings.
- Select the affected controller and choose Unpair, Forget, or the equivalent.
- Choose Pair new controller or Pair controller.
- Follow the left- or right-controller button combination displayed by the app.
Bluetooth must be enabled, the app must use the same Meta account as the headset, and nearby-device/Bluetooth permissions must be granted. If the app cannot see the headset, fix that phone-to-headset connection first. Meta’s support center and community guidance cover this general recovery path.
13. Update the headset and app
Install available Quest system and Meta Horizon app updates, then restart both devices. Menu names and software versions change, so do not assume an update caused the fault unless a specific version has been verified.
14. Allow firmware synchronization to finish
After pairing, leave the headset and controller powered on and close together for several minutes. A controller may be downloading or applying firmware. Do not remove its battery or repeatedly unpair it while an update appears to be in progress.
15. Use the documented Quest 3 controller firmware reset
This sequence is specifically documented in a Meta Community answer for Quest 3 controllers that track but do not register button input:
- Right controller: hold A, then tap the Meta/Home button five times.
- Left controller: hold X, then tap the Menu button five times.
The cited guidance says the controller should blink orange and white during reset and light blue while booting. If it has no power or cannot respond, the sequence may not start. Do not treat this as a universal Quest command, and do not confuse it with resetting the headset. Quest 2, Quest Pro, and every software revision may use different procedures.
16. Use hand tracking temporarily
If available, enable hand tracking to navigate settings, verify that the headset itself works, and reach pairing screens. Hand tracking is not a controller repair and may be unavailable in some games or lighting conditions.

17. Review controller and tracking settings
In Settings, search for sections named Controllers, Devices, or Tracking. Check pairing status, battery status, firmware status, hand-tracking/controller switching, and boundary or room-setup options. Exact paths are software-version dependent.

18. Factory-reset the headset only as a last software step
A factory reset cannot repair dead electronics, worn switches, drift, liquid damage, or broken tracking hardware. Before considering it:
- Confirm the fault also occurs in the Quest home environment.
- Try the correct battery or Quest Pro charging procedure.
- Restart and re-pair the controller.
- Enable cloud backup while the headset is usable.
- Ensure you can sign back into the Meta account and reinstall software.
A reset removes local data and settings and can leave you unable to complete setup if both controllers are unavailable. Meta community support has specifically advised enabling cloud backups before a headset reset in controller cases.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Symptom-specific checks
No light, vibration, or detection
- Install a fresh AA (or use the Quest Pro charging dock/cable).
- Remove and reinstall the battery.
- Inspect contacts and the battery door.
- Remove accessories.
- Test the battery in the other controller.
If the controller remains completely dead, probable hardware failure is more likely than a pairing problem.
Visible or tracked, but no button input
Test the home menu, restart the headset, remove and reinstall the battery, unpair and pair again, then apply the model-appropriate controller reset. If tracking works but every button remains inert, contact Meta.
Buttons work, but tracking is poor
Improve lighting, clean the headset cameras, remove reflective objects and accessories, rerun boundary or room setup, and test another room. A cracked tracking ring is mainly relevant to older ring-equipped controllers such as Quest 2; Quest 3 and 3S Touch Plus controllers use a different design.
Pairs, then disconnects
Replace the battery, check for a loose contact, keep the controller close, restart the headset and phone, re-pair in the app, and update both devices. If the fault follows one controller, suspect that controller rather than the room.
Thumbstick drift or a stuck trigger
Test in the home menu and several games, remove any grip or shell pressing the control, and compare behavior across apps. Persistent drift or a stuck trigger usually indicates mechanical wear. Do not spray liquid cleaner into the controller; repeated pairing resets will not repair a worn switch.

One controller works and the other does not
Concentrate on the affected controller’s battery, contacts, accessories, and pairing record. Do not assume the headset is defective simply because one side has failed.
Both controllers failed after an update or battery change
Restart the headset, verify headset charge, update the Meta Horizon app, and re-pair one controller at a time. If both fail in the home menu, avoid a factory reset until support has reviewed the case.
Heat, swelling, leakage, or physical damage
Stop using the controller, keep it away from flammable materials, and follow the battery-safety instructions for your model. Do not continue inserting batteries, charging, or repeatedly attempting resets. Contact Meta support.
When to stop troubleshooting
Use Meta Help Center support when a fresh battery or the correct charging procedure, restart, re-pairing, and model-specific reset fail; when the controller is physically damaged or overheats; when a reset produces no LED response; or when the headset cannot complete setup because a required controller is unavailable.
Have the headset and controller model, left/right side, purchase date and seller, region, any error message, LED behavior, battery test results, and every step already attempted ready for the support agent. Warranty eligibility and replacement availability depend on region, purchase date, proof of purchase, physical or liquid damage, model, authorized-seller status, and stock.
Repair or replacement?
Check compatibility before buying: Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S, and Quest Pro controllers are not interchangeable by default. An official replacement is the safest compatibility choice, but availability and pricing vary by model, side, region, and new or refurbished status. A used controller can conceal drift, worn buttons, damaged contacts, or a mismatched model, and opening a controller can create further damage or affect warranty consideration.
Official starting points are Meta Quest Support and the Meta Quest Accessories store. A replacement may still need app pairing and firmware synchronization before it works normally. For Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S owners, rechargeable AA cells can reduce disposable-battery use, but they will not repair bad contacts or failed electronics. Quest Pro owners should use its intended rechargeable system instead of AA batteries.
