The Xbox One S remains in that broad class but is slightly faster. The Xbox One X is a different tier, roughly comparable to Radeon RX 580/RX 590-class hardware. None is an exact one-to-one match because each Xbox uses a custom AMD system-on-chip and fixed-console optimization.

Microsoft lists these console figures in its Xbox One family specification sheet. The table describes similar hardware classes, not guaranteed identical frame rates.
The original Xbox One: Radeon HD 7790 or R7 260 class
The launch Xbox One has a custom AMD GPU with 12 compute units, 768 stream processors, an 853 MHz clock and approximately 1.31 TFLOPS of FP32 throughput. Its memory system combines 8 GB of DDR3 with 32 MB of ESRAM; Microsoft lists about 68 GB/s of DDR3 bandwidth and up to 204 GB/s through ESRAM access paths. See Microsoft’s official specifications.
That places it near AMD’s GCN-era Radeon HD 7790 and Radeon R7 260. AMD’s HD 7790 material describes a GCN desktop card aimed at 1080p DirectX 11 gaming, while independent comparison data puts the HD 7790 near the Xbox One GPU in theoretical capability (AMD product material; Technical City comparison).

How the desktop comparisons differ
- Radeon HD 7790: the simplest retail-card reference for the original console’s class.
- Radeon R7 260: a closely related Bonaire/GCN desktop analogue and a useful shorthand for the same tier.
- Radeon R7 260X: an upper-bound comparison; board clocks and configuration can make it faster than the console target.
The Xbox GPU is custom. It is not an unmodified HD 7790 or retail R7 260 with a console BIOS, so these names should be read as approximate equivalents.
Why no PC card matches the Xbox One exactly
Different memory architecture
A desktop card normally has dedicated VRAM, whereas the Xbox One’s GPU shares the console’s 8 GB DDR3 system memory and uses a small, high-bandwidth ESRAM pool. Developers can decide precisely which data goes where on one fixed hardware configuration.
Fixed hardware and console optimization
Xbox games target one known CPU, GPU, memory layout and operating environment. Engines can use platform-specific memory allocation, shader paths, dynamic resolution and effects tuned for that machine. A PC build with a similar GPU still depends on its CPU, system RAM, drivers, API overhead and operating system.

TFLOPS are only a rough locator
Equal or higher TFLOPS do not guarantee equal gaming performance. Architecture, bandwidth, driver behavior and the game’s rendering path all matter. A PC version may also expose higher texture settings or effects that the console build does not.

What resolution and frame rate should you expect?
The original Xbox One supports 1080p output at 60 Hz, but that specification describes the video signal, not a promise that every game renders internally at native 1080p or reaches 60 frames per second. In practice, many titles target a 30-fps profile and may use dynamic resolution or reduced effects to maintain it.
Therefore, an HD 7790 or R7 260 should be viewed as a 1080p-class, Xbox-One-era target, not as a guarantee of native 1080p/60 in every PC game. For a fair comparison, match the console game’s resolution scale, frame-rate target, texture quality, anti-aliasing and dynamic-resolution behavior.

Xbox One S: slightly faster, same broad class
The Xbox One S raises the GPU clock to 914 MHz and approximately 1.4 TFLOPS while retaining 12 compute units, 768 shaders, DDR3 and ESRAM. Microsoft’s launch specifications document the change (Xbox One S specifications).
That is a modest improvement over the launch model, so an HD 7790/R7 260 remains the appropriate desktop class. The One S should not be treated as a performance-generation jump.

Historical match: HD 7790, R7 260 or R7 260X
These cards make sense when you specifically want the original console’s historical performance class or are upgrading an old system at minimal cost. They are used-market products now, so inspect the cooler, display outputs, power connectors, physical condition and return policy. Limited VRAM, aging fans and modern driver support can make them poor choices for a new build.
Modern low-power option: Radeon RX 6400
The RX 6400 is not an architectural Xbox One equivalent. It is a newer RDNA 2 card with 12 compute units, 4 GB of GDDR6, 53 W board power and PCIe-powered operation. AMD’s specifications are available here; an example compact implementation is listed by MSI.

Its low power draw and compact versions suit small-form-factor systems, but its PCIe x4 interface can be a consideration on older platforms. Treat it as a newer budget substitute, not proof of identical Xbox performance.
Modern NVIDIA alternative: GeForce GTX 1650
The GTX 1650 is another practical low-power option. NVIDIA’s comparison table lists 896 CUDA cores, 4 GB memory, 75 W graphics-card power and a 300 W minimum system-power recommendation for the standard configurations shown (NVIDIA specifications). It is not a direct architectural match, lacks hardware ray tracing and is best judged by the price and condition of the particular card.
Use the right comparison for your goal
- Explaining the original console’s hardware: use Radeon HD 7790/R7 260 class.
- Matching Xbox One S: use the same class with a small performance uplift.
- Matching Xbox One X: start around RX 580/RX 590 class instead.
- Building a PC today: consider a newer RX 6400 or GTX 1650 after checking power, case clearance, PCIe compatibility, CPU, RAM and the game’s settings.
GPU class alone cannot determine whether a PC will reproduce a console experience. The CPU, memory capacity, drivers and the exact PC port can change the result substantially.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: the original Xbox One is best described as Radeon HD 7790/R7 260-class hardware; the Xbox One S is a slightly faster version of that tier, while the Xbox One X belongs roughly in the RX 580/RX 590 class. These are informed desktop comparisons, not exact equivalents.
