Yes. EA’s 2017 Star Wars Battlefront II plays on PS5 as the PS4 version through backward compatibility. It is not presented in the U.S. PlayStation Store as a separate native PS5 edition. Digital owners can download it on either PS5 model; a physical PS4 copy requires a PS5 with a disc drive. PlayStation Plus is required only for online multiplayer.
Which Battlefront II does this cover?
This guide covers EA and DICE’s Star Wars Battlefront II, released on November 17, 2017—not the 2005 game or the separately sold Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection.
The game includes Iden Versio’s single-player campaign, large-scale ground battles, space combat, heroes, vehicles and online modes. See the current product listing at PlayStation Store.
Is Battlefront II compatible with PS5?
Yes. The U.S. PlayStation Store identifies the product as PS4 Version and says it is playable on PS5. The listing also notes that some PS4 features may be absent and that your PS5 may need current system software. EA’s official page directs PlayStation buyers to the PS4 Store: EA’s Battlefront II page.

- Lego Star Wars Skywalker Saga PS5
In practical terms, PS5 runs the PS4 release through backward compatibility. That is different from installing a separately built PS5 game.
How to install it on PS5
Digital copy
- Sign in to the PlayStation Network account that owns the game.
- Open Game Library.
- Choose Your Collection.
- Select Star Wars Battlefront II.
- Choose Download, then launch it after installation.
Menu names can vary slightly after system updates. If it is missing, confirm that you are using the purchasing account and check your transaction history. Look under the PS4-compatible library rather than filtering only for PS5 games.
Physical PS4 disc
- Use a PS5 model equipped with a disc drive.
- Insert the PS4 Battlefront II disc.
- Allow the console to copy and update the game.
- Leave that same disc inserted whenever you launch the game.
Installation copies game data; the disc remains the ownership license. PlayStation’s compatibility guidance explains the disc requirement at PlayStation Support.

- MUST-HAVE EXPANSION FOR FANS: Ideal for Star Wars enthusiasts and competitive players alike—compatible with all existing factions, offering new deck strategies and exciting combos.
PS5 Digital Edition
A PS5 Digital Edition can play a digital license, but it has no disc drive and cannot validate a physical PS4 disc. If your only copy is on disc, you need a digital purchase or an eligible subscription.
Is there a native PS5 version or free upgrade?
The current official Store and EA listings identify the PlayStation product as PS4 and do not present a separate native PS5 edition. Do not buy the Celebration Edition expecting a graphics or performance upgrade: it is an additional-content edition, not a PS5 build. The Store listing even specifies DUALSHOCK 4 vibration, consistent with the PS4 product.
There is therefore no official basis here for promising 4K resolution, 60 frames per second, ray tracing, DualSense haptics or other PS5-specific features. The newer console may offer ordinary system-level benefits in some circumstances, but those are not the same as a title-specific upgrade.

- Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron (PSP)
Do you need PlayStation Plus?
Only for online multiplayer. The Store listing says PS Plus is required for online play of up to 40 players. The campaign and other offline modes do not require an online-multiplayer subscription. EA separately states that console online play requires PlayStation Plus.
U.S. PlayStation Plus Essential prices displayed on August 18, 2026 were $10.99 for one month, $27.99 for three months and $79.99 for 12 months. Prices and renewal terms can change; subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled. Check PlayStation Plus before subscribing.

Because PS5 is running the PS4 game, it uses the supported PS4 game environment rather than a separate native-PS5 ecosystem. PlayStation’s PS5 FAQ says PS4 games played on PS5 can play with PS4 users in the same game. Actual matchmaking still depends on the game’s servers, your account, connection and service availability; it is not a guarantee that every mode will remain available indefinitely.

What editions and content are available?
| Edition | What it means | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | Base game, including the campaign and standard multiplayer content. | Players who want the core game. |
| Celebration Edition | Base game plus additional cosmetic or unlock content described by the current Store listing. | Players who specifically want those extras. |
| Celebration Edition Upgrade | A separately listed add-on for eligible owners. | Players upgrading content, not performance. |
Neither Celebration product is a separate PS5 version. The Store showed a $19.99 standard price and a $39.99 Celebration price in the supplied U.S. listing; verify the live price because promotions change. A displayed $4.99 promotion ended August 13, 2026.

EA Play does not replace PS Plus: you still need PS Plus for this game’s online multiplayer. It is most useful if you also want several other EA titles. For one game over a long period, buying a permanent digital or disc license may be simpler.
Which way should you buy it?
| Your situation | Most practical choice |
|---|---|
| PS5 Digital Edition owner | Digital purchase or EA Play. |
| Disc-drive PS5 owner seeking the lowest one-time cost | A compatible used PS4 disc, provided it is undamaged and complete. |
| You play several EA games | EA Play, if the subscription’s current catalog suits you. |
| You want permanent access to this one game | Buy the digital version or a physical disc. |
| You want a PS5-exclusive presentation | This is the wrong expectation; the official listing is for the PS4 version. |
Used discs can be region-specific, damaged or missing already-redeemed bonus codes. A physical copy cannot be converted into a digital license for a different account.
Troubleshooting PS5 installation and online play
The game is missing from your library
- Sign in with the account that made the purchase.
- Check Game Library → Your Collection, including PS4 titles.
- Confirm the transaction history shows the game or a bundle containing it.
The console asks for the disc after installation
That is normal. Insert the same PS4 disc before launching; installation does not remove the disc-license check.
The disc will not work
- Confirm the console has a disc drive.
- Check that it is the correct Battlefront II release and region.
- Clean the disc and inspect it for damage.
- Connect the PS5 to the internet for updates.
Online play fails
- Verify an active PS Plus membership.
- Check PlayStation Network status.
- Sign in to the required EA account and confirm account linking.
- Test your network and NAT type.
- Check for a game or platform service interruption.
Neither EA nor PlayStation’s listings guarantee permanent server availability or a particular matchmaking population.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVerdict
Star Wars Battlefront II (2017) is playable on PS5, but as a backward-compatible PS4 game. Digital ownership works on either PS5 model; a physical PS4 copy requires a disc-drive console. PS Plus is a separate requirement for online multiplayer, and the current official listings do not advertise a native PS5 build or free PS5 upgrade. Choose the standard or Celebration Edition for its content, not for imagined PS5 performance features.
