CachyOS overtook Arch Linux in the number of reports attributed to desktop distributions on ProtonDB in March 2026. The change is a meaningful sign of CachyOS’s momentum among Linux-gaming enthusiasts, but it is not proof that CachyOS has the most users, the best compatibility, or the highest frame rates. ProtonDB is a community reporting database, not a controlled benchmark or an installation census.
What CachyOS actually dethroned
Reports in March 2026 said CachyOS had become the most frequently reported desktop distribution on ProtonDB, ending Arch’s reported run at the top since late 2021. Tux Machines and other coverage describe the ranking change, while Golem notes that desktop labels are treated separately from SteamOS and Steam Deck entries.
That wording matters. CachyOS and Arch are counted as separate labels even though CachyOS is Arch-based. The ranking therefore compares the activity attributed to each label, not every installation built on the Arch ecosystem. It also does not silently include SteamOS, Steam Deck, or other specialized systems in the desktop comparison.
July coverage still described CachyOS as ProtonDB’s leading desktop label, but no public primary historical table in the available material provides a verified live count or margin. Treat the result as a reported snapshot, not official Linux market share.

What ProtonDB measures
ProtonDB collects user-submitted reports about Windows games running through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer. A report can include:
- Distribution and kernel
- GPU, driver and other hardware
- Proton version or a custom build
- Launch options and workarounds
- Performance observations and a user-rated result
For example, ProtonDB game pages expose configuration details and troubleshooting notes rather than results from matched laboratory systems. See the report examples for app 2051620, app 275850 and app 250900.
Consequently, a higher number of CachyOS reports can mean more CachyOS users are submitting reports, more attention is being directed to the project, or both. It does not establish CachyOS’s total installed base, daily users, compatibility percentage, or frame-rate advantage. Reports may also be old, hardware-specific, duplicated by prolific contributors, or tied to one Proton build.
Why CachyOS has gained visibility
A simpler route into the Arch ecosystem
Arch remains intentionally hands-on. CachyOS provides a graphical installer and preselected desktop choices, reducing the amount of manual assembly required to reach a usable desktop. That lower entry cost is frequently cited in coverage such as Tux Machines’ March report.

Performance-oriented defaults
CachyOS positions itself around optimized packages, kernels, schedulers and hardware-aware settings on its official site. Those are defaults and packaging decisions, not a special compatibility layer that makes every Proton game work. The available reporting does not provide a controlled, universal performance comparison with a matched Arch installation.
Gaming tools and custom Proton options
CachyOS offers gaming-related packages and a custom Proton build. ProtonDB reports show users running proton-cachyos on CachyOS and elsewhere in the Arch family. That visibility may attract more enthusiasts, but seeing a custom Proton build in a report does not prove that the operating system caused the result. A custom build can help one game, regress another, or be unnecessary.
Community momentum
Attention can reinforce itself: publicity brings installations, installations produce more reports, and the ranking creates further publicity. This is a plausible explanation for rapid growth, not a measured causal result. The wider Linux-gaming field is also expanding around projects such as Bazzite and Nobara rather than converging on one distribution.
Does CachyOS run games better than Arch?
There is no blanket yes. Both systems use the same broad upstream building blocks: Arch-family packages and repositories, Mesa and Vulkan, Linux kernels, Wine/Proton, Steam and familiar desktops such as KDE Plasma or GNOME. CachyOS can differ in kernel configuration, package builds, scheduler defaults, repositories, installer choices and preconfigured tools.

Those differences interact with the variables that usually dominate a game result:
- CPU architecture and GPU generation
- AMD, Intel or NVIDIA driver stack
- Kernel, Mesa and Proton versions
- Wayland or X11, compositor and VRR configuration
- Shader-cache state and launch options
- Game engine and anti-cheat implementation
ProtonDB reports for the same or related games can show successful play on CachyOS, Arch, Nobara, SteamOS and other distributions, alongside failures from different hardware or software combinations. A fair performance claim would require matched hardware, drivers, kernel, desktop, compositor, Proton build and game settings. The ranking supplies none of those controls.
CachyOS versus vanilla Arch
| Area | CachyOS | Arch Linux |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Graphical installer and desktop choices reduce manual setup. | Minimal-by-default process with more decisions and documentation work. |
| Defaults | Performance-oriented kernels, package builds and gaming conveniences. | Upstream-oriented defaults; you select and configure components. |
| Control | Extensive control, with additional project repositories and choices. | Maximum control over the system composition. |
| Troubleshooting | More project-specific variables can complicate diagnosis. | Fewer distribution-specific layers make upstream attribution simpler. |
| Maintenance | Rolling-release responsibility plus CachyOS-specific updates. | Rolling-release responsibility with the standard Arch ecosystem. |
| Best fit | Users wanting an immediately usable, tuned Arch-family desktop. | Experienced users who prefer to build and maintain everything themselves. |
CachyOS is therefore neither an unrelated platform nor merely an identical Arch install. Its installer, repositories, kernels, package builds and defaults produce a different operating experience, while much of the underlying software remains shared.
How Bazzite, Nobara and other choices compare
Bazzite
Bazzite is a Fedora-derived, image-based desktop aimed at a console-like gaming experience. Atomic updates and rollback-oriented workflows appeal to users who value recovery and appliance-style management. The trade-off is a different model for system changes, with Flatpak, containers and image updates playing a larger role than traditional Arch package management.

Nobara
Nobara starts with Fedora and supplies gaming and multimedia adjustments in a conventional desktop distribution. It suits readers who want Fedora’s ecosystem without assembling every gaming component, but it is not an Arch environment and follows different release and maintenance practices.
SteamOS and mainstream distributions
For a handheld-style appliance, SteamOS-compatible hardware remains the most integrated route; see the Steam Deck. For a conservative general-purpose desktop, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora Workstation and similar mainstream choices may be preferable even if they are not the leading ProtonDB desktop label.

NVIDIA
Proprietary-driver versions, kernel changes, hybrid graphics and Wayland can affect NVIDIA systems independently of the distribution. CachyOS is not an automatic fix for those issues. Check current project guidance for the exact laptop or desktop before installing.
AMD and Intel
AMD gaming results depend heavily on Mesa, Vulkan and upstream-kernel support; the value of CachyOS tuning varies by CPU and GPU and requires benchmark evidence. Newer Intel Arc hardware can benefit from recent kernels and Mesa, while rolling releases can also expose regressions sooner.

Anti-cheat and multiplayer
A game may launch and render correctly while online play remains blocked by Easy Anti-Cheat, BattlEye, kernel-level anti-cheat or a publisher policy. ProtonDB ratings do not override server-side restrictions, and no CachyOS kernel or custom Proton build guarantees multiplayer access.
Native Linux builds and custom Proton
A native Linux version can be better, worse or differently maintained than the Windows version under Proton. Recommendations are game-specific. Start with Steam’s current stable or Experimental Proton choice and recent reports for your hardware before trying proton-cachyos or changing several variables at once.
A low-risk way to evaluate CachyOS
- Read the current CachyOS documentation and confirm support for your GPU, Wi-Fi, hybrid graphics and Secure Boot setup.
- Back up the existing system and game saves, and test a live USB when practical.
- Install Steam using the distribution-supported method.
- Test one representative game with the stable Proton version Steam or recent ProtonDB reports recommend.
- Change one variable at a time: Proton build, launch option, driver, kernel or compositor.
- Keep a recovery path and rollback plan, especially before kernel or graphics-driver changes.
Troubleshooting order when a game fails
- Read current ProtonDB reports for the exact game and comparable hardware.
- Try Proton Experimental or the currently recommended stable build.
- Verify Vulkan and GPU drivers.
- Check whether anti-cheat affects online play.
- Remove unnecessary launch options.
- Compare the default Proton build with a custom build.
- Test Wayland and X11 only when the symptom suggests a compositor issue.
- Try a known-good kernel and roll back the last change if the failure began after an update.
Who should choose CachyOS?
- Choose CachyOS if you want current Arch-family software, a graphical setup process and performance-focused defaults, and you accept rolling-release maintenance.
- Stay with Arch if your existing system works, you prefer upstream documentation and minimal customization, or you want to select every gaming component yourself.
- Choose Bazzite if atomic updates, rollback and a console-like Fedora-based desktop matter more than conventional Arch tooling.
- Choose Nobara if you want a familiar Fedora desktop with gaming adjustments.
- Choose another distribution or hardware platform if your priority is a conservative work machine, a Steam Deck-style appliance, or a multiplayer title whose anti-cheat policy does not support Linux.
Verdict
CachyOS becoming ProtonDB’s most reported desktop distribution is a real and notable community signal. It reflects the appeal of an easier, performance-focused Arch derivative and the momentum of Linux gaming. It does not show that CachyOS has more total users than Arch, that Arch is declining, or that every game runs faster or more reliably.
For a gamer choosing today, the practical question is not which label tops ProtonDB. It is whether your hardware, games, multiplayer requirements and tolerance for rolling-release maintenance match CachyOS’s trade-offs. If they do, CachyOS is a strong starting point; if you value maximum control, atomic rollback or Fedora’s ecosystem, Arch, Bazzite or Nobara may be the better fit.
