EmuDeck announced the Dreamcast-inspired mini PC in August 2024 on Indiegogo; the campaign was canceled in October after poor uptake, and reporting said the small number of backers would be refunded. There is no verified current purchase or funding route for the original machine.
What the EmuDeck Machine was supposed to be
The EmuDeck Machine was planned as EmuDeck’s first branded computer: a compact, retro-styled mini-ITX system for couch gaming, emulation and a SteamOS-like desktop experience. Its enclosure was inspired by the Sega Dreamcast and was reported at roughly 8.6–8.7 inches square, larger than an ultra-compact NUC-style PC but visually distinctive. The original announcement is documented by Overkill.
The proposed operating system was Bazzite, a separate Linux distribution designed for a console-like gaming experience. EmuDeck would provide the installation and configuration layer for emulators, controller profiles, bezels, hotkeys, Steam Library integration and related tools. Emulators remain separate projects, and EmuDeck does not provide copyrighted ROMs or BIOS files; users must supply files they have obtained and dumped legally, as explained in the official manual.
EmuDeck software and EmuDeck hardware were never the same requirement. The software continued independently, and the project lead said hardware-specific functionality was not intended to be withheld from Steam Deck users. The current EmuDeck site lists software for SteamOS/Linux and Windows, plus Android early access—not a Machine purchase page.

EM1 and EM2: the campaign-era configurations
These were proposed crowdfunding configurations, not final retail specifications. Components and plans changed during the campaign.

Tom’s Hardware’s launch coverage reported the processor, memory and storage plans. Later coverage mentioned alternatives such as a Ryzen 7 7840 and a possible Radeon RX 7600 eGPU dock. Those references describe evolving concepts, not a confirmed final specification sheet.
Neither model should be treated as a guaranteed “PS3, Xbox 360 or Switch machine.” Emulation varies by game, emulator, renderer, drivers, resolution, settings and patches. A processor name alone cannot establish universal playability.

What happened to the Indiegogo campaign?
The project used Indiegogo, not Kickstarter. Contemporary reports put its flexible-funding target at approximately $69,680–$69,710, with an original end date of October 28, 2024. Early coverage said roughly $16,000 arrived on the first day, but the campaign ultimately attracted too few buyers. Tom’s Hardware reported that only six people had pledged for finished machines before shutdown.

- The EM2’s reported pledge price was high compared with systems using similar integrated AMD graphics.
- Backers were funding new hardware from a team best known for software.
- A custom 3D-printed enclosure added character but also manufacturing, replacement-part and cost risk.
- Coverage noted that CAD work, enclosure testing and other prototyping remained while a December 2024 delivery target was being discussed.
The planned Christmas Eve 2024 shipping date therefore described an intention, not an established delivery record. Notebookcheck’s cancellation report likewise does not establish a completed retail launch.
Can you buy or fund one now?
No—not the original EmuDeck Machine through a verified official channel. As of October 2026, the official EmuDeck presence provides software downloads, documentation, a store and Patreon support, but no active Machine listing. Do not send money through a stale Indiegogo link, social-media preorder, reseller listing or page using 2024 prototype images without a verifiable manufacturer, warranty and shipping record.

Because the campaign was canceled, its $331–$365 and $675–$676 figures are historical pledge prices, not current sale prices. Reporting says refunds were intended; it does not establish that every refund was completed on the same date.

How to get the EmuDeck experience instead
The lower-risk option is to buy currently sold hardware through a normal retailer, then configure the software yourself:
- Choose a compatible mini PC, small-form-factor desktop or Steam Deck based on the console generations and games you actually want to run.
- Install a supported operating system. Bazzite can provide a console-oriented Linux experience, but it is not SteamOS.
- Download EmuDeck from emudeck.com and follow the official setup documentation.
- Provide your own legally obtained ROM and BIOS dumps; EmuDeck does not bundle them.
- Check storage, controller support, cooling and per-game compatibility rather than assuming that a CPU label guarantees performance.
A generic AMD mini PC usually offers clearer warranty coverage, returns and upgrade paths. A DIY small-form-factor build offers the most component control but requires more Linux, firmware and emulator troubleshooting. A Steam Deck is the most established route if handheld use matters more than a permanent living-room box. A Bazzite-compatible desktop is the closest practical substitute for the proposed console-like interface.
What about Playnix?
April 2026 secondary reports described a later EmuDeck-associated project called Playnix. Reported specifications included a Ryzen 5 processor, Radeon RX 9060 XT with 16GB graphics memory, 16GB DDR4-3600 RAM, a 512GB M.2 SSD plus another M.2 slot, a 600W power supply, Linux-based PlaynixOS and an 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless controller. Those details come from secondary coverage. No verified official sales page, shipping status, warranty terms or direct statement proving that Playnix is a continuation of the canceled EmuDeck Machine has been established here. Treat it as a possible later or related project, not a revived 2024 campaign.
Bottom line for retro-gaming buyers
The EmuDeck Machine was a genuine but unsuccessful 2024 hardware experiment, not an available product in 2026. Its strongest idea was convenience: a styled enclosure and preconfigured Linux-emulation experience. Today, buyers can obtain that experience more safely by purchasing current hardware with ordinary retail protections and installing EmuDeck independently.
