On a supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, open the game or app and press Windows + Alt + R to start recording. Press the same shortcut again to stop. The video is saved as an MP4 in Videos → Captures. Press Windows + Alt + M while recording to turn microphone capture on or off, and Windows + G to open the Game Bar controls.
What Xbox Game Bar records
Xbox Game Bar is Windows’ built-in gaming overlay. Its Capture controls can record the active game or a supported app, capture system audio, and optionally add microphone commentary. It is designed for quick clips and demonstrations rather than full production work.
Microsoft’s current instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, although Settings names and widget layouts can vary by build. See Microsoft’s guide to recording with Xbox Game Bar.
Before you start
- Use a PC running Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Enable Xbox Game Bar in Settings.
- Open and focus the game or app you want to capture.
- Close passwords, private messages, unrelated tabs, and notifications that could appear in the video.
- Check available space in your Videos folder.
- If sound matters, confirm the output device and microphone before recording.
Enable Xbox Game Bar
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Search Settings for Xbox Game Bar.
- Turn on the option that enables Game Bar for recording game clips and related functions. The wording and location can differ between Windows versions and builds.
- Press Windows + G. If the overlay appears, Game Bar is available.
How to record a game or app
Fastest method: keyboard shortcut
- Focus the game or app.
- Press Windows + Alt + R.
- Look for the recording indicator or timer.
- Play or use the app. During recording, press Windows + Alt + M if you need to mute or unmute the microphone.
- Press Windows + Alt + R again to stop.
Windows saves the finished recording automatically as an MP4. If the shortcut is unavailable on your keyboard or has been changed by policy or remapping, use the Capture widget instead.

Start from the Game Bar interface
- Press Windows + G.
- In the Capture widget, select the record button.
- Return to the game or app and perform the actions you want to show.
- Stop with Windows + Alt + R, or use the stop control in the recording indicator.
Include game, computer, and microphone audio
Choose system-audio sources
- Press Windows + G.
- Open the Settings widget.
- Open Capturing.
- Select the audio option that includes the sources you need. In Microsoft’s documented interface, an All option includes relevant game, app, and system sounds; labels can vary by Windows version or language.
Audio selection is separate from microphone control. A recording can contain game sound without your voice, or your voice without the intended game audio, so make a short test clip when audio is important.
Turn the microphone on or off
Press Windows + Alt + M during recording to toggle microphone capture. The microphone must be connected, selected in Windows, and allowed by microphone privacy permissions. Check Windows sound settings if the wrong input device is being used.

Where recordings are saved
The documented default is:
C:Users<your-username>VideosCapturesIn File Explorer, open Videos, then Captures. Recordings are MP4 files, and Microsoft’s instructions say the filename includes the game or app name plus the recording date and time. If you do not see the file, search File Explorer for *.mp4 and check whether your capture settings use a different location.
Take a screenshot instead
With the game or app focused, press Windows + Alt + Print Screen. The screenshot is saved as a PNG in the Captures folder. On some keyboards the key is labeled PrtSc or PrtScn, or requires Fn. Microsoft’s keyboard reference explains the Print Screen variations: Print Screen shortcuts.

Can Xbox Game Bar record the whole desktop?
Game Bar is documented as a recorder for a game or app, not as an unrestricted desktop recorder. It may not capture every surface, including the desktop, File Explorer, Settings, administrator prompts, or protected video. Treat it as an active-window tool rather than promising that it records everything visible on every Windows PC.
For a selected desktop region or a tutorial that needs region control, Windows 11’s Snipping Tool can record a chosen portion, preview the result, and pause. Troubleshoot Xbox Game Bar recording
Game Bar will not open
- Search Settings for Xbox Game Bar and confirm it is enabled.
- Restart the target game or app, then try Windows + G again.
- Check whether a keyboard utility, policy, or remapped shortcut is intercepting the Windows key.
- Update Windows and Game Bar components if your device offers updates.
- If the overlay still does not appear, use Snipping Tool or another recorder.
Windows + Alt + R does nothing
- Make sure a supported game or app is focused.
- Confirm that Windows + G opens the overlay.
- Check the keyboard’s Windows key and any shortcut-remapping software.
- Open the Capture widget and read any displayed error.
The recording stops or fails immediately
Check free disk space, graphics drivers, system load, and whether the target content blocks capture. Also check whether the game and Game Bar are running under different administrator privileges. These are troubleshooting areas rather than universal causes; the exact error message and Windows build matter.
There is no microphone audio
- Confirm that the microphone is connected and selected in Windows.
- Allow microphone access in Windows privacy settings.
- Check that the Game Bar microphone control is not muted.
- Press Windows + Alt + M to verify its state before speaking.
There is no game or system audio
- Verify the selected Windows output device.
- In Game Bar’s Settings → Capturing, select an option that includes the needed audio sources.
- Check the app in Windows Volume Mixer.
- Watch for Bluetooth or HDMI devices switching the active output.
- Open the MP4 in a player that supports its audio track.
The file is missing
Check Videos → Captures first, then search for *.mp4. If the save location was customized, inspect Game Bar or Windows capture settings. The default location is documented by Microsoft in its Xbox Game Bar recording instructions.

Use Game Bar when low setup and speed matter. Choose another tool when you need reliable whole-desktop or region capture, multiple sources, production overlays, extensive editing, or content that Game Bar cannot capture.
