In March 2022, an inspection of Stadia Android app version 4.6 found code and assets that appeared to prepare those ideas, but Google never confirmed that they shipped. Stadia’s servers later shut down on January 18, 2023, making the discovery a historical footnote rather than a usable feature update.
What the Stadia 4.6 discovery actually showed
On March 7, 2022, 9to5Google examined the Stadia Android app’s APK and reported references to several possible features. APK findings can reveal unfinished work, experiments or support for features that are never released. The report explicitly warned that Google might not ship the features and that its interpretation could be imperfect.
How the proposed motion controls might have worked
Phone movement translated into gamepad input
References labeled “Device Motion” appeared to describe using an Android phone’s movement as controller input. Depending on a game-specific configuration, tilting or moving the phone might have been translated into a virtual joystick direction or a trigger action.
Racing games were mentioned as an example of where this could have been useful. That was an illustration, not a demonstration or confirmation of a working racing mode. The report did not establish which games supported the system, how calibration would work, or whether the feature was ready for players.

What changed in the touch gamepad
Revised touch-control assets
The APK contained updated assets for Stadia’s on-screen touch gamepad. 9to5Google described the visible design changes as modest rather than a wholesale replacement of the interface.
Possible per-game customization
A reference in the package appeared to allow developers to customize touch controls for individual games. This could have enabled layouts or control behavior tailored to a game’s needs, but the code did not prove that developers could use the system or that players ever received it.

Motion controls and touch controls compared
| Concept | Input method | Evidence found | Release status |
|---|---|---|---|
| “Device Motion” | Phone movement mapped to virtual joystick or trigger inputs | Code references | Unconfirmed |
| Touch gamepad update | On-screen buttons and controls, potentially customized per game | Revised assets and a possible customization reference | Unconfirmed |
These were not two Stadia products or settings that players could choose between. They were separate clues found in the same Android package.
What “broadcaster” and “spectator” references meant
The same APK inspection noted references to “broadcaster” and “spectator.” The report could not determine whether those terms related to watching Stadia gameplay through YouTube livestream viewers, sharing gameplay, or another concept. They should therefore be treated as unresolved code clues, not evidence of a released streaming feature.

Why the update cannot be used today
Google’s Stadia servers stopped running on January 18, 2023, and Stadia commerce was disabled. Consequently, the motion-control and touch-gamepad ideas cannot be activated on Stadia now, regardless of what remained in an old app package.
Google separately documented converting the Stadia Controller to Bluetooth Low Energy for use with other devices, with a conversion deadline of December 31, 2024. That process concerns the controller’s hardware connectivity and does not restore Stadia access. Google also cautioned that compatibility with other services varies and had not been substantially tested.

Bottom line for readers finding the old headline
“Stadia update brings motion controls, touchpad update, more” describes a 2022 report about possible features inferred from app code, not a confirmed Stadia release. Motion input and a touch-gamepad revision were never established as publicly available features, and Stadia’s 2023 shutdown means the discovery has only historical significance.
