It launched at $299 USD ERP in the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom and Canada in August 2024; ByoWave’s current listing shows the Lithos Collection at €299 and says Batch 1 is sold out while Batch 2 is shipping soon.
What the Proteus controller is
Proteus is a physical controller system rather than a fixed gamepad shape. Its components connect through a snap-together system, allowing the player to build a layout around their reach, hand use, posture and preferred game controls. Xbox says the system supports more than 100 million combinations.
ByoWave describes it as “the world’s first fully modular video game controller — built for your play style.” The kit is designed for Xbox and PC gaming and is sold as a gaming controller, not as a medical or assistive device. ByoWave says it will not meet every accessibility need.

Layouts the modular design can support
One-handed play
Controls can be arranged so a single hand reaches the inputs needed for a game. The practical result depends on which modules are used, their spacing and the player’s range of motion; the product information does not promise a universal one-handed layout.
Two-handed play
Players can build a familiar split or gamepad-like arrangement while moving individual controls to reduce awkward reaches.

- Dual Rumble Motors - Take your gaming experience to the next level, providing tactile feedback and sensations that bring your virtual worlds to life.
- Immersive Impulse Triggers – provides haptic feedback sensations using built-in motors so you can feel the action of the game.*
- Extra Long USB-C Cable - Provides you with 10 ft. of distance for more comfort and flexibility than shorter cables.
- Ergonomic Design – Lightweight and comfortable for long gaming sessions.
Tabletop play
A tabletop configuration places controls on a surface instead of requiring the player to hold a conventional controller. This can help players who prefer or need a stable setup, although the best placement is personal and game-dependent.
Alternative control arrangements
ByoWave also presents ergonomic, mouse-combination and keyboard-alternative use cases. These describe possible configurations, not guaranteed outcomes for every player or title.
How to choose Proteus over a fixed gamepad
- Choose Proteus when layout is the main problem: Its value is the ability to move inputs, change the physical footprint and rebuild the controller for different games.
- Choose a conventional pad when simplicity is the priority: A fixed controller requires no assembly or layout decisions and may be easier to share.
- Check your specific needs before buying: Proteus is not a medical device, and ByoWave explicitly says it will not satisfy every accessibility requirement.
What is not established about Proteus
The available product and launch announcements establish the design, listed compatibility, components, software remapping and sales status. They do not provide an independent clinical study, controlled accessibility-outcome measurement, laboratory durability test or representative disability-community survey for the retail product. Treat claims about comfort or improved performance as personal-fit questions rather than measured guarantees.
