The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 was the most common individual GPU in Valve’s September 2026 Steam Hardware & Software Survey, appearing in 5.86% of surveyed systems. Separately, the 16GB GPU-memory category accounted for 27.21%, up 0.29 percentage points from the previous month. Those figures describe the survey sample—not GPU sales or all PC owners—and the latest monthly change alone does not establish a long-term trend.
What is the most popular GPU on Steam?
Valve’s September 2026 Steam Hardware & Software Survey lists the RTX 5070 at 5.86% of surveyed systems, with a reported monthly change of +2.30 percentage points. It leads the individual GPU entries in that snapshot. The percentage is the card’s prevalence in the survey, not its share of sales, installed units worldwide, or the PC market as a whole.
The survey identifies the RTX 5070 by model, but the cited survey data does not independently establish its VRAM capacity. The 12GB description appears in the title-matched PC Guide report; the Steam survey itself should not be treated as proof of that specification.
Are 16GB graphics cards becoming more common?
In the same September snapshot, systems in the 16GB GPU-memory category made up 27.21% of respondents, an increase of 0.29 percentage points month over month, according to Valve’s survey. This supports saying that the category’s share rose in September. One monthly comparison does not by itself show that ownership has continued to climb over a longer period.

Why a sharp monthly change needs context
Hardware Busters’ October 2, 2026 report notes that Simplified Chinese respondents shifted by seven percentage points and suggests this may have contributed to movement in September’s results. That is a possible influence from the survey’s sample composition, not a demonstrated cause of the RTX 5070’s rise. A change in survey prevalence can reflect who is represented in a given month as well as changes in the hardware respondents use.
For that reason, the RTX 5070’s +2.30-point change is best read as a movement in Valve’s monthly survey snapshot. It does not show that buyers purchased enough cards to produce the same change in the broader market.

What the survey can—and cannot—tell GPU buyers
The results show which hardware configurations appear frequently among Steam survey respondents, but they do not establish whether the RTX 5070 is the right card to buy. Popularity does not demonstrate value or suitability. A useful comparison for an individual buyer also depends on regional price and availability, performance at the intended resolution and settings, memory needs, power supply and case compatibility, and relevant software features. The survey figures provide no basis for naming a best-value GPU.
