Choose Bedrock if your friends play on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Windows, or mobile, or if you want built-in controller and touch controls. Choose Java if you mainly play on a computer and care most about community mods and Java multiplayer servers. If you are buying on Windows PC, check your Microsoft account first: the official Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC bundle includes both editions.
The editions are not cross-compatible. Owning both lets you switch between separate multiplayer ecosystems; it does not let a Java player join a Bedrock world or Realm.

This is a compatibility and ecosystem choice, not a ranking of which edition is universally better.
Which edition is better for your friends?
Pick Bedrock for console, mobile, and mixed-device groups
Bedrock is the practical choice when players use different kinds of hardware. Supported Bedrock platforms include Windows, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and mobile devices, although the exact supported-platform list and console-generation terms can change. Confirm the current store or support page for the specific device you own.

A Bedrock player can join other Bedrock players through compatible worlds, servers, or Realms. A Java player cannot simply join that Bedrock session.
Pick Java for a computer-only Java group
Java cross-play covers Windows, macOS, and Linux players who are all running Java Edition. It is the natural fit for a group that already uses Java servers and does not need console or mobile players in the same session.
Java and Bedrock have different content ecosystems
Why PC mod users usually choose Java
Minecraft describes Java as the edition associated with community mods and Java server communities. Mod loaders, mod collections, and many long-running community servers are built specifically for Java. If changing the game with community-created mods is your main reason for buying Minecraft, Java is the more direct route.
Why Marketplace and add-on users usually choose Bedrock
Bedrock emphasizes the in-game Marketplace and add-ons. That approach is useful when you want curated content presented through the game client, especially on consoles or mobile devices where traditional PC mod installation is less convenient.

Marketplace content and Java mods are not interchangeable. A pack made for one edition should not be assumed to work in the other.
Controls: keyboard, controller, and touch
The official comparison identifies no native controller or touch support for Java, while Bedrock includes controller and touch support. Java is therefore best suited to a keyboard-and-mouse PC setup unless you are willing to configure additional software or hardware yourself.
Bedrock is the safer choice for a gamepad, touchscreen, or a family using several input types. A compatible controller can be useful for a Bedrock player on PC, but no particular controller is required for the edition decision.
What Windows PC buyers should purchase
The current PC product includes both editions
Minecraft currently lists Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC as the combined Windows PC product. Minecraft Help says this bundle launched on June 7, 2022.

Buying the PC bundle does not merge the editions. You install and launch Java or Bedrock separately, then use the edition that matches the people and servers you want to join.
Check ownership before paying again
- Open the Minecraft Launcher or Microsoft Store.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that originally purchased Minecraft.
- Check the library or product page for Java Edition and Bedrock Edition ownership.
- Launch each edition, if available, to confirm that the correct account is being used.
- Only purchase again after confirming that the original account does not already own the bundle or an eligible edition.
An old purchase attached to a different Microsoft account will not necessarily appear in the account you are checking. The official ownership guidance and PC bundle page are the appropriate places to verify eligibility before checkout.
How multiplayer, servers, and Realms work
Edition matching is mandatory
Java and Bedrock use separate multiplayer ecosystems. Java players need Java worlds, Java servers, or Java Realms; Bedrock players need Bedrock equivalents. A Java owner and a Bedrock owner cannot join each other’s ordinary worlds or Realms simply because both own Minecraft.
Console multiplayer may require a platform subscription
Minecraft Help says console multiplayer requires the relevant online service: Xbox Game Pass Core on Xbox, PlayStation Plus on PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch Online on Switch. Multiplayer also depends on matching game versions, a signed-in account, an internet connection, and the appropriate child-account permissions. Requirements and prices vary by country and can change, so check the current terms for your platform.

Realms are optional and edition-specific
Minecraft offers separate Realms products for Java and Bedrock. A Realm does not bridge the edition divide; everyone joining must use the matching edition.
When accessed in 2026, Minecraft’s Bedrock Realms page displayed plans at $3.99 USD per month and Bedrock Realms Plus at $7.99 USD per month. Those are dated page observations, not guaranteed future prices; verify the current price, billing terms, and regional currency before subscribing.

You play with an Xbox, Switch, PlayStation, or mobile friend
Choose Bedrock, provided everyone is using compatible Bedrock versions and has the required accounts and online access. Java will not solve a mixed-console group’s compatibility problem.
Your group uses Windows, macOS, and Linux PCs
Choose Java when everyone wants Java servers or mods. Choose Bedrock instead if controller support, touch input, or easier cross-platform access matters more than the Java mod ecosystem.

You are a solo PC player deciding between mods and convenience
Choose Java for community mods and Java server communities. Choose Bedrock for native controller or touch input, Marketplace content, and the option to play with supported console and mobile users.
You are buying Minecraft on Windows for the first time
Look for Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC, which includes both editions. The bundle gives you flexibility, but you still select the matching edition whenever you join friends.
Bottom line: which Minecraft edition should you buy?
Buy Bedrock when cross-platform play with console or mobile friends, controller and touch support, or Marketplace content is the deciding factor. Buy Java when you are primarily a PC player who wants community mods and Java servers. On Windows, check your Microsoft account before purchasing because the official PC bundle may already grant access to both.
