Whether it works depends on whether his AWP impact and communication compensate for weaker rifling and a short integration window. As of October 2, 2026, there is no post-signing match evidence to settle the question.
What FUT changed
FUT announced on October 1, 2026 that it had completed the signing of Álvaro “SunPayus” García from G2. He replaces Nikita “cmtry” Samolotov as the team’s AWPer. HLTV’s listed lineup is dem0n, Krabeni, dziugss, xfl0ud and SunPayus, coached by coolio; cmtry and lauNX are benched. Insider Gaming reproduced FUT’s announcement: “We are thrilled to announce that Álvaro ‘SunPayus’ García will be our new AWPer.”
The move follows a period on the sidelines: G2 benched SunPayus in June 2026 and later replaced him with r1nkle. His G2 stint began with the BLAST Open London 2025 title, but HLTV described the subsequent results as short of consistent playoff success. That record offers evidence of high-level experience, not proof that he will immediately lift FUT.
Why the signing could raise FUT’s ceiling
A specialist AWP option
HLTV’s signing report characterizes SunPayus as an experienced tier-one AWPer and a likely upgrade in that role. If he creates more opening opportunities, converts late-round situations, or forces opponents to respect the AWP, FUT could gain a clearer point of leverage in its game plan.

Another voice in mid-rounds
The report also describes SunPayus as capable of serving as a secondary caller. That could ease some of the mid-round decision-making load on FUT’s existing leaders and give the team more options when its opening plan stalls. The value is not simply having another experienced player speak: his calls will matter only if the five players can act on them quickly and consistently.
Experience for a young roster
HLTV reported FUT’s average roster age as 20.3 years; SunPayus is 27. A veteran presence could help the team manage pressure and make more composed late-round decisions, but age alone does not establish that leadership or stability will improve. Those effects have to show up in the team’s play.

What FUT gives up—and what could go wrong
AWP value versus rifle damage
The clearest cost in HLTV’s signing report is weaker rifling production relative to the outgoing setup. FUT is therefore not making a simple upgrade across every role: it is betting that better AWP play is worth the rifle output it loses. If SunPayus does not generate enough value with the AWP, or if the remaining riflers cannot absorb the lost production, the trade could leave the lineup less dangerous overall.
cmtry had meaningful upside
cmtry helped FUT win PGL Bucharest in April 2026 and posted a 1.24 rating at that tournament, according to HLTV. The same report cited his 1.00 average rating on LAN in 2026, a sign of why FUT might have wanted greater consistency. The contrast matters: replacing him may address a consistency concern, but it also removes a player who had already delivered in a major team result.

Little time to build shared protocols
FUT had roughly three weeks between the signing and the start of PGL Masters Bucharest on October 24, 2026. That is a short runway for a new AWPer to settle into positioning, utility timings, resource allocation and late-round communication. A team can show promising individual moments before those shared habits are reliable, so an early result by itself may not tell the whole story.
How to judge whether it is working
The useful test is not just whether SunPayus posts a strong rating. Watch whether the role change improves the team’s rounds without making its rifle core less effective.

- AWP impact: Look for opening influence and clutch value from SunPayus, rather than judging the move only by his overall rating.
- Mid-round conversion: Check whether his secondary calling helps FUT turn viable positions into round wins, especially after the first plan breaks down.
- Rifling balance: Assess whether the rest of the lineup can replace enough of the rifle damage lost with cmtry’s departure. AWP gains need to outweigh that cost across the team.
- Integration: Look for clear role assignments, coordinated utility and growing consistency in the team’s map pool and protocols. These are signs that the new five are functioning as a unit, not just assembling individual highlights.
What the first test can—and cannot—show
PGL Masters Bucharest is the first meaningful competitive test identified after the signing. It can provide early evidence about role clarity, communication and whether FUT’s AWP-versus-rifling trade-off is viable. With only a short preparation period, however, the event should not be treated as a final verdict on the partnership. The eventual results were unresolved on October 2, 2026.
The evidence supports a conditional answer: FUT has added experience and potential AWP leadership to a young roster, but accepted a real rifling and integration risk. The move will work if SunPayus changes enough rounds with the AWP and in mid-rounds to compensate for the production and cohesion FUT must rebuild. It has not yet been proven in competition.
