NVIDIA’s RTX Remix 1.2 particle system lets modders add GPU-driven effects such as fire, smoke, embers and energy projectiles to supported classic games. They can tag an in-game element as an emitter for quick experiments or build effects with the RTX Remix Toolkit. Creating an RTX Remix mod requires a GeForce RTX GPU; NVIDIA says players can run completed mods on hardware capable of Vulkan ray-traced games.
What RTX Remix path-traced particles add
NVIDIA announced the particle system on September 9, 2025, as a feature of RTX Remix 1.2. RTX Remix captures scenes and assets from classic games, lets modders replace or enhance them, then uses its runtime to put the revised scene back into the game with path tracing. The platform targets DirectX 8 and DirectX 9 games that use fixed-function graphics pipelines, though compatibility varies by game. NVIDIA’s announcement and the RTX Remix project repository describe the feature and platform.
Modders can create new GPU-driven particles to supplement or replace older visual effects. NVIDIA describes the system as supporting path-traced shadows and reflections, along with physics that allow particles to collide with their environment. Its examples include fire, smoke, embers, Portal energy pellets and an enemy in Half-Life 2 RTX emitting particles. These are NVIDIA demonstrations, not independent compatibility or performance tests. NVIDIA’s feature announcement also shows more than 100,000 shadowed particles in a Half-Life 2 RTX Antlion Guard example; that figure describes the company’s demonstration, not a benchmark result.
How to add particles with RTX Remix
Tag an emitter in the game for quick experiments
- Open the game with RTX Remix and press Alt+X to open the RTX Remix Developer Menu.
- Go to Games Setup, then Categorize Textures, and select the game element you want to use as an emitter.
- Designate the selected element as a particle emitter.
- Use controls in the Rendering tab, including effect size, particle count and color, to adjust the result.
NVIDIA presents runtime tagging as a fast way to prototype or add a small number of particles. It offers less authoring control than building effects in the Toolkit. NVIDIA’s announcement documents the in-game workflow.

Use the Toolkit for more involved effects
The RTX Remix Toolkit is NVIDIA’s recommended route for more serious particle modding, with greater control over authoring than quick in-game tagging. NVIDIA’s RTX Remix documentation covers the Toolkit. The available feature descriptions do not establish a precise threshold for when an effect becomes too complex for runtime tagging, so treat the two routes as practical choices rather than hard limits.
Which classic games are in scope?
NVIDIA says advanced particles can be used in more than 165 RTX Remix-compatible games. That is NVIDIA’s platform-level figure, not a guarantee that every game on the list works perfectly or supports every effect. RTX Remix broadly targets classic DirectX 8 and 9 games, but the individual game, its rendering path and the mod all affect compatibility. Check the current RTX Remix project information and game-specific mod documentation before planning an effect.

NVIDIA’s Portal energy pellet and Half-Life 2 RTX examples show how particles can fit familiar game effects, but they should not be read as proof that every title or visual effect can be reproduced in the same way.
Hardware: what creators need versus what players need
NVIDIA says a GeForce RTX GPU is required to create RTX Remix mods. Its September 2025 announcement does not specify a minimum RTX model, a recommended card, or a performance target for creators. It also says completed mods can run on hardware capable of Vulkan ray-traced games. The announcement does not spell out an exact Vulkan capability level, so it does not establish a universal player-side card recommendation. See NVIDIA’s hardware guidance.

Keep those requirements separate: the stated GeForce RTX requirement is for making mods, while the player requirement is described in terms of Vulkan ray tracing. The available guidance does not say that every card in either category will deliver the same frame rate.

NVIDIA says its particles can be added “without significantly reducing performance,” but the announcement does not define the workload, provide independent measurements or compare frame rates. Treat the wording as NVIDIA’s claim, not a guarantee for a particular game, effect or GPU.

At the time of its September 9, 2025 announcement, NVIDIA reported 237 active community projects, more than 100 released RTX Remix mods and over 2 million downloads. Those are dated company-reported totals, not current counts. The same announcement cited $60,000 in cash prizes for an RTX Remix mod contest; that historical contest figure is not a prediction of creator earnings. NVIDIA’s announcement is the source for these figures.
