Not as of October 2, 2026. Production I.G. gives the Japanese release date as November 18, 1995, and the official site marked the film’s 30th theatrical anniversary on November 18, 2025. The 31st anniversary falls on November 18, 2026, so the headline’s “31 years later” wording is early when counted by anniversaries.

For the 30th anniversary, Oshii reflected on the film’s lasting reception: “Before I realized it, 30 years had passed. The fact that this work continues to be loved—even as its media formats have shifted from film to video to DVD and beyond—is thanks to the strength of the original work and to everyone who has supported it.” The comment appears in the official anniversary notice dated November 18, 2025.
