Microsoft’s 2025 portable gaming device is real, but it is not a traditional Xbox console. The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are ASUS-built Windows 11 handheld PCs with Xbox software and services. They can play compatible PC games, stream supported titles, and access other PC storefronts; they do not run every Xbox console game locally. That makes them direct Steam Deck competitors and alternatives to Switch 2 for portable gaming—not a replacement for either system.
What Microsoft and ASUS launched
Microsoft and ASUS announced the ROG Xbox Ally family in June 2025. The two devices became available worldwide on October 16, 2025. ASUS provides the hardware, while Microsoft contributes Xbox software and service integration. Both devices run Windows 11 Home rather than Xbox console system software. Microsoft’s announcement describes the partnership; Xbox’s launch announcement confirms availability.
Calling them “Xbox handhelds” is reasonable shorthand if the Windows-PC distinction is clear. Their closest hardware comparison is Steam Deck and other handheld PCs. Switch 2 competes for the same broad portable-gaming audience, but it is a dedicated Nintendo console with a different library and operating model.
ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X: what changes between them?
The base Ally costs less; the Ally X is the premium configuration, with a faster processor tier, more memory and storage, and a larger battery. The specifications below are from ASUS’s product information and specification sheets. Prices are U.S. figures.

See ASUS’s Ally product page and Ally X product page for model details. A higher-resolution, higher-refresh display does not guarantee demanding games will run at 1080p and high frame rates: results depend on the game, power settings, resolution, drivers, and optimization.
Which model makes sense?
- Choose the Ally if you want a Windows handheld with Xbox integration and can accept its more modest memory, storage, and battery capacity. It is the less expensive entry into this family, not a budget-priced alternative to every handheld.
- Choose the Ally X if you specifically value its higher-tier processor, 24GB memory, 1TB storage, and 80Wh battery and can justify the $999.99 U.S. price. Those upgrades do not make it the automatic best value.
What Xbox games can you actually play?
The crucial distinction is between an Xbox game and a Windows PC version of that game. These handhelds do not offer general native compatibility with the Xbox console catalog. Local play depends on having a compatible PC version and the right entitlement; other routes include cloud streaming or Remote Play from a home Xbox console.
- Xbox PC games and Microsoft Store: Play supported Windows versions locally. A purchase for Xbox console does not automatically include a PC copy unless the game and entitlement support that arrangement.
- Xbox Play Anywhere: Supported games can share eligible purchases, saves, and progress between Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. Xbox said in October 2025 that the program covered more than 1,000 games; the catalog and each title’s compatibility can change. See the Xbox October update.
- Game Pass on PC: The PC catalog and local availability depend on the plan, region, and game. A console-only entitlement is not a guarantee that a PC download is included.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming: Stream supported games where the service, subscription, network, and region allow it. Streaming does not mean the game is installed or running locally.
- Xbox Remote Play: Stream from a compatible home Xbox console over a network. This is different from cloud gaming and depends on access to your console and connection quality.
- Other PC stores: Windows allows access to services such as Steam, Epic, GOG, and Battle.net, subject to each launcher and game working well on the device.
Microsoft’s handheld feature announcement describes Xbox full-screen mode, Game Bar, and compatibility indicators including “Handheld Optimized” and Windows Performance Fit. These features aim to make discovery and controls more handheld-friendly, but Windows remains underneath. Desktop dialogs, launcher logins and updates, games that expect a keyboard or mouse, and anti-cheat incompatibilities can still complicate use. Microsoft’s handheld development resources explain its compatibility work.

ROG Xbox Ally versus Nintendo Switch 2
These devices overlap as portable gaming purchases, but their strengths are different. Switch 2 is built around Nintendo’s software and a dedicated console experience; the Ally is a Windows PC with Xbox services and access to PC storefronts.
| Buyer priority | ROG Xbox Ally family | Nintendo Switch 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Game library | Compatible Windows games, Xbox PC titles, supported streaming, and other PC storefronts | Nintendo games and compatible Switch 2 software |
| Controls and play styles | Integrated handheld controls; no detachable controllers | Detachable Joy-Con 2 controllers and a design suited to shared play |
| TV play | Can connect to displays through compatible accessories; package details should be checked before purchase | Includes a dock for TV-focused play |
| Software experience | Xbox-oriented full-screen layer over Windows 11; PC flexibility can bring setup and launcher friction | Dedicated Nintendo system software and a more controlled console experience |
| U.S. price and date | Ally: $599.99; Ally X: $999.99 | $449.99 through August 31, 2026; Nintendo announced $499.99 effective September 1, 2026 |
Nintendo’s launch announcement set the U.S. launch price at $449.99 on June 5, 2025. Its May 2026 filing announced the U.S. increase to $499.99 from September 1, 2026. The lower price does not make Switch 2 a like-for-like PC: its appeal is Nintendo exclusives, detachable controllers, docked play, and integrated console software. Choose it when those matter more than PC flexibility.

ROG Xbox Ally versus Steam Deck
Steam Deck is the more direct comparison because it is also a handheld PC. The primary difference is software and ecosystem: the Xbox Ally runs Windows 11, while Steam Deck uses SteamOS and is designed around Steam. The Xbox family offers a 1080p, up-to-120Hz display; Steam Deck OLED uses a 1280×800 OLED panel with up to 90Hz. A higher resolution can demand more from hardware, so display specifications alone do not establish which device performs better in a particular game.
| Consideration | ROG Xbox Ally / Ally X | Steam Deck OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 11 Home | SteamOS |
| Primary ecosystem | Xbox PC, Windows PC, Game Pass, and other compatible PC storefronts | Steam library and SteamOS desktop mode |
| Display | 7-inch 1080p IPS, up to 120Hz | 7.4-inch 1280×800 OLED, up to 90Hz |
| Memory | 16GB on Ally; 24GB on Ally X | 16GB system memory |
| Battery | 60Wh on Ally; 80Wh on Ally X | 50Wh; Valve lists 3–12 hours for OLED, depending on content |
| Compatibility approach | Windows game and launcher compatibility, with title-specific caveats | Steam library integration and Valve’s Deck Verified labels |
| U.S. price | $599.99 for Ally; $999.99 for Ally X | Check Valve’s current U.S. store price; listed prices can change |
Valve’s Steam Deck page lists the OLED battery range and model specifications; its U.S. pricing is subject to change, so check the live store before comparing a purchase. The Ally’s Windows foundation is useful for PC Game Pass and launchers that do not fit naturally into SteamOS. Steam Deck’s focused Steam integration, compatibility labels, and community configuration support suit players whose libraries are mostly on Steam. Neither platform guarantees that every PC title, launcher, or anti-cheat system will work without friction.

Which handheld should you buy?
- For Xbox subscribers who want local PC Game Pass and Windows stores: Consider the ROG Xbox Ally, after checking that the games you want have compatible PC versions. The Ally X is for buyers who can make practical use of its added hardware.
- For a premium Windows handheld: The Ally X is the high-end option in this family, particularly if its extra memory, storage, and battery capacity matter to your use. Its price makes that a specific need-based choice rather than a default recommendation.
- For Nintendo exclusives, shared play, and a dedicated console: Choose Switch 2. Its library and integrated console experience are the point; it is not a substitute for a Windows PC handheld.
- For a Steam-first library and a focused handheld interface: Choose Steam Deck if your games are compatible and SteamOS fits your preferences. Check Valve’s current price and compatibility information for your specific titles.
- For broad launcher flexibility: The Xbox Ally family’s Windows environment is the better fit among these choices, provided you are comfortable with Windows setup and title-by-title compatibility checks.
Before buying for a particular game, check whether you need a Windows version, a separate PC purchase, a subscription, a cloud connection, or a home console for Remote Play. Also account for recurring subscription costs and any accessories you plan to use; the device prices do not make these ecosystems’ total costs identical.
