For the best balance on Steam Deck, set the display to 50 Hz and cap Dave the Diver at 50 FPS. Keep the game at its default graphics and resolution, with TDP limiting and GPU clock control off. If you prefer steadier performance and potentially better battery life over smoother motion, use 40 Hz and 40 FPS instead. Deeper dives can be more demanding than restaurant shifts, so judge the settings in underwater areas as well as at the sushi bar.
Recommended Steam Deck settings at a glance
| Setting | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Frame-rate limit | 50 FPS | A balanced target; deep underwater areas may still dip. |
| Display refresh rate | 50 Hz | Pairs the display cadence with the frame-rate cap. |
| Resolution | Default/native | Lowering it produced little reported performance benefit and a softer image in Steam Deck HQ testing. |
| Scaling filter | Linear/default | Keep the default unless deliberately testing a lower render resolution. |
| TDP limit | Off | Do not restrict power as part of the baseline profile. |
| GPU clock | Default/disabled | No manual clock setting is needed for the baseline. |
| In-game graphics | Default | The game has relatively few graphics controls, according to Steam Deck HQ. |
| Compatibility | Default Proton configuration | Do not force a Proton version unless troubleshooting a specific issue. |
The 50/50 and 40/40 recommendations reflect Steam Deck HQ’s testing, not a guarantee for every game update, Deck, or area. Valve’s Verified label covers compatibility criteria; it is not a promise of a particular frame rate. Steam Deck HQ’s testing and Valve’s Verified criteria provide those respective details.
How to apply the 50 FPS profile
- Launch Dave the Diver from your Steam Library.
- While the game is running, press the Steam button and open Performance.
- If you want to watch performance, enable the performance overlay in that panel.
- Set the refresh rate to 50 Hz and the frame-rate limit to 50 FPS.
- Leave TDP limiting off, GPU clock control at its default, and the scaling filter at Linear/default.
- Return to the game and try a restaurant shift, a shallow dive, a deeper dive, and a busy combat sequence. Also check any late-game or additional content areas you regularly play.
SteamOS labels and panel layout can vary by version, but the relevant controls are in the running game’s Performance panel. Matching refresh rate and frame-rate cap is intended to make presentation more consistent; it does not increase the game’s raw rendering performance.
Why 50 FPS is the best overall target
Steam Deck HQ reported generally smooth restaurant sequences, while deeper underwater sections could approach the 50 FPS range. A 50 FPS cap is therefore a compromise: it is more fluid than 40 FPS, while avoiding the expectation that every demanding dive will hold 60. The report is a useful performance reference, but its measurements should not be treated as a permanent guarantee for later builds.

If a 50 FPS cap still feels uneven during your regular dives, try 40 Hz/40 FPS rather than immediately lowering resolution or changing Proton. Brief isolated dips are different from persistent stutter or a sustained inability to hold the target; use the same representative areas when comparing profiles.
Use 40 FPS for steadier play and battery priorities
- Open the game’s Performance panel.
- Set the display refresh rate to 40 Hz.
- Set the frame-rate limit to 40 FPS.
- Leave the other power, scaling, and graphics settings at their defaults, then revisit the same test areas.
Steam Deck HQ described 40 FPS as fully stable in its testing, though less smooth than 50 FPS. A lower frame-rate target can reduce power use compared with pursuing a higher target, but actual battery life depends on the Deck model, display brightness, battery condition, software, and what is happening in the game. There is no single battery-time figure that applies to every owner.

Should you target 60 FPS?
Choose 60 FPS if responsiveness matters most and you are comfortable with occasional dips. The available testing found that demanding underwater sections could fall from 60 toward the 50 FPS range, even when lighter restaurant sequences were smooth. That makes 60 FPS a reasonable experiment, not a reliable all-area lock. Test the deeper parts of your own save before deciding whether the extra smoothness is worth less consistent pacing.
Graphics, resolution, and Steam FSR
Do not start by searching for a large set of PC-style graphics controls. Steam Deck HQ describes the game’s adjustable graphics options as limited; the main recommendation is to leave graphics at default. Check the current in-game menu after updates, since menus and options can change.

Why default resolution is usually best
Steam Deck HQ found that forcing a lower resolution brought limited performance gains while making the image look worse. The Deck’s built-in display is already modest in resolution, and this game’s pixel-art and 3D presentation can make softness noticeable in text, interface elements, edges, and underwater detail. If lowering resolution does not resolve a substantial performance problem, restore the default and reduce the frame-rate target instead.
A lower resolution can still be worth testing when docked to a higher-resolution screen, when troubleshooting severe performance issues, or when battery life matters more than clarity. Compare the result directly with the default image before keeping the change.

When to try FSR
Steam FSR is optional, not a standard part of this profile. Try it only if you intentionally lower the game’s render resolution, then inspect text, pixel edges, menus, character outlines, and underwater detail. If the image looks soft or shimmers, return to default resolution and Linear scaling. There is not enough game-specific evidence to say that FSR improves Dave the Diver for everyone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Black bars and the Deck’s 16:10 screen
The Deck’s panel is 16:10, with a 1280×800 default resolution; Valve also lists 1280×720 among the Deck’s default resolutions. Steam Deck HQ reported that Dave the Diver does not support 16:10 resolutions, so black bars can be expected when its 16:9 image is shown on the Deck. The physical panel resolution does not mean every game fills all 800 vertical pixels. See Valve’s display criteria for the Deck specifications and Steam Deck HQ’s report for the game’s aspect-ratio behavior.

LCD and OLED: what changes?
The recommended starting profile is the same for Steam Deck LCD and OLED. Valve says Deck Verified ratings apply to both models and that OLED does not change a game’s compatibility rating. Do not assume the OLED model delivers a major frame-rate increase; the evidence here does not establish one. OLED owners may have more flexibility with higher refresh rates, but 50 FPS/50 Hz remains a sensible balance. Battery results vary between models and individual settings, so compare your own play sessions rather than relying on a universal runtime figure.
Docked play and external displays
Docking provides display output and connections, but does not automatically give the Deck more rendering performance. On a television or monitor with a higher native resolution, a lower-resolution game image may look softer after scaling. Start with a sensible output target and choose 40 or 50 FPS if a 60 FPS target is inconsistent; do not assume a desktop-class resolution or frame rate. Check the television’s scaling, overscan, black-bar presentation, and input latency separately, since those depend on the display and setup.
Troubleshoot crashes, freezes, or graphical problems
A frame-rate dip confined to deeper dives is not, by itself, evidence of a Proton or controller fault. If you have crashes, freezing, missing audio or video, input trouble, or graphical corruption, simplify the setup before changing compatibility versions.
- Update Dave the Diver and restart the Deck.
- Return Performance-panel settings to default and remove any forced Proton version.
- Verify the game files through Steam, then retest with default resolution and no third-party overlays or tools.
- If the issue remains, record the game version, SteamOS version, LCD or OLED model, Proton version if applicable, whether the Deck is docked, and which areas reproduce the problem.
- Contact the game’s support channel if the issue persists. The June 18, 2026 patch notice advises updating and verifying files for relevant Steam Deck issues and gives this compatibility-data log location:
./.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1868140/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/LocalLow/nexon/DAVE THE DIVER.
Do not install GE-Proton, Decky plugins, or frame-generation tools as routine performance tweaks. They add variables and may introduce latency or artifacts. If an online configuration suggests a custom Proton build, treat it as a troubleshooting lead for a particular software setup, not a requirement for every Deck.

If a problem began after an update, compare it first with the updated game, default Proton configuration, and default Deck performance settings. The June 18, 2026 notice is troubleshooting guidance; it does not establish a general performance improvement from that update.
