You can download VALORANT’s Windows installer, but you cannot currently play the game natively or reliably on Linux. Riot’s Vanguard anti-cheat requires Windows-level security capabilities that Wine and Proton do not provide. For dependable local play, use Windows through a dual boot or a separate PC; streaming from a Windows computer is another option, with added latency.
Can you download and play VALORANT on Linux?
There is no official Linux version, Linux package, or supported Wine or Proton installation path for VALORANT. Riot’s PC specifications list Windows 10 (build 19041 or newer) and 64-bit Windows 11, not Linux. The official download page offers the Windows game, but downloading an installer—or getting part of the Riot Client to open under Wine—does not mean the game can launch and run.
The obstacle is Vanguard, VALORANT’s anti-cheat system. Riot says Wine-based implementations cannot satisfy Vanguard’s driver requirements and describes Linux boot-state and kernel-module attestation as limitations. Riot’s explanation of Vanguard and Linux/Wine discusses League of Legends, but it explains the relevant Vanguard compatibility issue; Lutris also marks VALORANT unsupported on Linux because of its kernel-level anti-cheat. Riot announced an on-demand Vanguard mode for sufficiently secured PC devices in June 2026. That announcement does not say Linux is supported or change Riot’s stated limitations for Wine and Linux environments. Riot’s Vanguard on-demand announcement

Why Wine, Proton, and game launchers do not fix it
Wine and Proton let many Windows applications and games use Windows-style user-space interfaces on Linux. Vanguard’s requirements go below that layer: a normal Wine or Proton setup cannot supply a genuine Windows kernel driver and the expected system-integrity checks. Compatibility with another anti-cheat system does not establish compatibility with Vanguard.
Lutris, Bottles, and Heroic are game-management tools, not replacements for the Windows kernel. They can help install or organize supported games and runners, but they cannot add the Windows security environment Vanguard expects. A launcher window appearing—or game files downloading—is not evidence that VALORANT is playable.

What to expect from common Linux methods

Changing Linux distributions—whether Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, Debian, Pop!_OS, Nobara, or SteamOS—does not supply the missing Windows kernel-driver environment. Avoid guides that promise to bypass, spoof, disable, or modify Vanguard; they are not a supported fix and can create security or account risks.
Best local option: dual boot Windows
Dual booting lets you keep Linux and start Windows when you want to play. It is the most practical choice for dependable local performance, but installation and partition changes carry data-loss risk: back up important files first, and consider a separate SSD if your computer supports one.

- Check the Windows requirements. Riot lists Windows 10 build 19041 or newer, or 64-bit Windows 11, for PC. Riot’s specification page says Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot. These are Windows requirements; they do not make VALORANT compatible with Linux.
- Prepare storage. Confirm your PC has enough free space, or use a compatible second SSD. Check your computer’s drive and slot support before buying hardware. If you resize or repartition a disk, make a verified backup first.
- Install Windows separately. Install Windows on its own partition or drive, following Microsoft’s installation guidance for your PC. Avoid overwriting the Linux partition. Exact partition steps depend on the machine and disk layout, so do not apply a generic command blindly.
- Boot into Windows and verify security settings. Use UEFI mode. For Windows 11, confirm TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are enabled if required by the system and game setup.
- Get the game from Riot. Open the official VALORANT download page, download the installer, and install the Riot Client and Vanguard in Windows.
- Restart when prompted. Vanguard may require a reboot before the game can start. Then launch VALORANT from the Riot Client while booted into Windows.
Other ways to play without changing your Linux installation
Use a separate Windows PC
Install and play VALORANT directly on a Windows computer that meets Riot’s requirements. This preserves your Linux setup and avoids repartitioning. For competitive play, using that PC directly is preferable to streaming because remote video and input add latency.
Stream from a Windows computer
You can use a real Windows PC as the host and stream its display and controls to a Linux computer or Steam Deck. This still requires a Windows machine capable of running VALORANT, plus a reliable network. Streaming adds input and display latency, and results depend on network quality; it may be unsuitable for ranked or competitive play. Cloud-hosted Windows machines are not automatically compatible with Vanguard, so do not assume a generic cloud gaming or virtual-machine service will work.

Install Windows instead of Linux
A Windows-only installation avoids maintaining two operating systems, but it removes your Linux setup. Consider this only if you want VALORANT and other Windows software to be central to how you use the computer.

“The Riot Client installed, but the game will not launch”
That can happen in an unsupported environment. The client and game installer are separate from Vanguard’s ability to load and validate its required security environment. Installing the launcher is not proof the game is supported.

“A guide or video says it works”
Check whether it demonstrates a live match rather than just an installer or client window, whether it uses a real Windows installation, and when it was published. Old guides may predate Vanguard’s role as the blocker, while experimental reports may stop working after an update. A community demonstration is not the same as an officially supported method.
“I get an error in a Windows VM”
A virtual machine may not provide the environment Vanguard expects, and Riot has described virtualization as a security-visibility concern. VM behavior can vary and change with updates; GPU passthrough and input configuration add complexity. Use dual-boot Windows or a physical Windows PC instead of trying to defeat anti-cheat checks.
“Will enabling Secure Boot or TPM in Linux fix it?”
No. Riot lists TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot as Windows 11 requirements for VALORANT. Enabling firmware settings while running Linux does not provide the Windows driver environment the game requires.
“Will Riot add Linux support?”
Riot has not provided an official Linux version or a supported Wine/Proton path in the cited material. Its current statements describe limitations for Linux and Wine, but they do not establish that support will never be added.
