To improve GPU performance, first find out what is limiting it: the graphics card, CPU, temperature, power settings, memory, or the game itself. Measure a repeatable scene, confirm the right GPU is being used, then change one thing at a time. The best fix might be a cooler case, a lower ray-tracing setting, or a sensible frame cap—not a universal “maximum performance” switch.

Higher average FPS, steadier frame times, lower input latency, better image quality, and lower heat are different goals. A change that helps one can hurt another, so choose the result you want before tuning.

Measure performance before changing settings

Use the same game scene, built-in benchmark, or creative workload for every comparison. Record your resolution, graphics preset, upscaling mode, frame-generation state, and driver version. Then capture average FPS, 1% lows or another percentile result, frame times, GPU utilization and clock, temperature (including hotspot if available), VRAM use, power draw, and CPU utilization by core.

NVIDIA FrameView can record FPS and percentile performance, latency, power, clocks, utilization, and temperature on NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel GPUs. It measures; it does not optimize the card by itself. See the FrameView user guide.

  • On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.8 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.
  • GPU utilization near 95–100% with stable clocks: The game is probably GPU-bound. Test lower GPU-heavy settings or upscaling.
  • GPU utilization well below maximum: Check whether a CPU thread is saturated, the game has a frame cap, the wrong GPU is in use, or power settings are limiting performance. One overall CPU percentage can hide a single busy thread.
  • Clocks fall as temperature rises, or FPS declines over time: Check cooling, fan behavior, and power limits. There is no single safe temperature threshold for every GPU; model, firmware, cooler, and laptop design matter. Windows thermal management can reduce device performance when cooling is required. Microsoft’s thermal-management overview explains the mechanism.
  • VRAM is nearly full and frame times spike: Try lowering texture quality, resolution, ray tracing, or a high-resolution texture pack. System RAM is not a drop-in replacement for GPU memory.
  • High average FPS but erratic frame times: Look for shader compilation, background work, asset streaming, overlays, driver problems, or unstable tuning rather than assuming the GPU needs more clock speed.
  • Power draw is unexpectedly low: Check the laptop charger or desktop power connections, driver profile, frame cap, temperatures, and CPU bottleneck before raising a power limit.

Change just one setting, repeat the same test, and compare the same metrics. If lowering resolution barely changes FPS, stop reducing image quality: the limit is likely elsewhere.

Check the GPU, power, driver, and display setup

Make sure the intended GPU renders the game

On a Windows 11 system with integrated and discrete graphics, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select or add the game, choose Options, then choose High performance if it should use the discrete GPU. The available choices depend on the hardware. Restart the game after changing its preference. Microsoft documents Windows graphics preferences.

On a desktop, connect the monitor to the graphics card’s video output, not the motherboard output, unless you specifically intend to use integrated graphics. Check the game’s own graphics-device option when one is available.

Update drivers with a rollback plan

Note the installed version, then check the GPU maker’s support page and release notes for your game, operating system, known regressions, and compatibility requirements. Install a suitable stable driver and retest the same scene. Windows Update installs recommended drivers and may offer optional ones under Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates; for a game-specific issue, the GPU maker’s release notes are often more informative. Microsoft explains driver updates in Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A clean removal and reinstall is a troubleshooting step for persistent driver crashes, vendor changes, incomplete updates, corrupted profiles, or repeated display resets—not a routine FPS boost. If a new driver makes results worse, return to the known-stable version, reset the game’s driver profile, and test with overlays off. Keep a copy of the stable installer when practical.

Set the monitor to its intended refresh rate

Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the monitor, and choose a supported refresh rate. FPS is the rate the game renders frames; refresh rate is how often the display updates. A high-refresh monitor does not create more FPS, though it can show more of the frames the game produces. Variable refresh rate (VRR) can adapt display updates to rendered FPS on compatible hardware. On some laptops, Dynamic Refresh Rate favors battery life; test with it disabled if it interferes with a game. Microsoft describes refresh-rate and VRR settings.

Use Windows power settings when they address the problem

When plugged in and willing to accept extra heat and power use, open Settings > System > Power & battery and select Best performance if that option is available. It can reduce power-saving behavior; it is not a GPU overclock and will not fix a CPU bottleneck. Microsoft warns that the setting can drain a laptop battery faster and make the device run warmer. Read Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance.

Treat Game Mode as a reasonable default, not a guaranteed FPS multiplier. On Windows 11, Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Optimizations for windowed games affects compatible DirectX 10 and 11 games in windowed or borderless modes and can reduce presentation latency. Test it per game; turn it off for that title if it causes flicker, stutter, or HDR problems, then restart the game. Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling is likewise not a universal enable-or-disable recommendation: benchmark both states only when investigating frame pacing or latency.

Fix heat, airflow, and power delivery

A GPU that is too hot or power-limited may not sustain its boost clocks. Compare clock, temperature, fan speed, and power from the start of a run to several minutes into it.

  • Desktop: Clear dust from filters, fans, and heatsinks; verify fan direction and operation; give the GPU room to draw air; and avoid enclosing the case tightly. Check that the card is seated in its intended PCIe slot and its power connectors are fully attached. If useful, briefly test with the side panel removed to diagnose restricted airflow, not as a permanent fix.
  • Laptop: Use a hard, level surface and keep vents clear. Use the manufacturer’s performance profile when plugged in. A cooling stand may improve intake on some designs, but compare temperatures and sustained clocks rather than assuming it will raise FPS.
  • Either: Check for an appropriate, recognized laptop charger, correctly connected desktop PSU cables, and any riser or adapter issue. Do not choose a PSU wattage from a generic rule; use the requirements for the exact GPU and system.

A global maximum-power profile can add heat, fan noise, and idle consumption without helping a game that already boosts correctly. More heat can also undermine sustained performance if the card reaches its thermal limits.

Tune game settings to the bottleneck

If the GPU is fully loaded, start with settings that consume substantial graphics resources. Make changes in the game first, where they are easy to compare and reverse.

  1. Reduce ray tracing or path tracing if you want a substantial GPU workload reduction and can accept the visual change.
  2. Lower resolution or render scale when the GPU is the limit. If FPS barely moves, investigate the CPU, engine, frame cap, or background activity instead.
  3. Reduce shadows, volumetrics, reflections, global illumination, or foliage selectively; these are often useful image-quality/performance trade-offs.
  4. Keep textures high while VRAM has headroom. If memory is full and stutter appears, reduce texture quality or remove an oversized texture pack.
  5. Lower crowds, simulation density, or view distance when the GPU is underused and CPU or engine limits are more likely.
  6. Disable motion blur, depth of field, chromatic aberration, or film grain if you prefer a clearer image. These effects are not necessarily major FPS costs.

Compare changes in motion, not only a paused screenshot. A lower setting may improve frame rate but introduce a visual compromise you do not like.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use upscaling, frame generation, and frame caps deliberately

Native rendering produces the image directly at the selected resolution and is the reference for image quality, but it can be demanding. Upscaling renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image, often offering a useful performance/quality balance. Dynamic resolution varies internal resolution to pursue a frame-rate target, so image clarity can change during play. NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, and Intel XeSS differ in implementation and compatibility; compare them in the specific game and on your GPU. Watch for ghosting, shimmering, or fine-detail loss, especially in motion.

Frame generation can make displayed motion look smoother, but generated frames are not equivalent to rendering that many frames directly. It does not fix a CPU bottleneck or severe frame-time spikes, and it can add artifacts or feel less responsive when the underlying rendered rate is low. Treat it as an optional smoothness feature, not a substitute for a healthy baseline.

A frame-rate cap can reduce power, heat, and unnecessary rendering, and may improve consistency. Pick a cap based on the game, monitor refresh rate, VRR range, and whether you prioritize latency or efficiency. There is no single cap that suits every display and title. VRR can reduce tearing and stutter on compatible systems, but it does not increase raw GPU rendering capability.

NVIDIA settings: use per-game profiles

In NVIDIA Control Panel, use Manage 3D settings > Program Settings to adjust a particular game instead of changing global behavior for every application.

  • Latency: Prefer the game’s NVIDIA Reflex option when available. Otherwise, test Low Latency Mode On or Ultra in the driver profile. NVIDIA describes these modes as limiting frames the CPU can prepare in advance; Ultra minimizes the queue most aggressively, but may reduce throughput in some CPU-limited cases. Measure latency and frame times, not just average FPS. NVIDIA’s 3D settings reference details the options.
  • Power management: Try Prefer maximum performance for a game that demonstrably drops clocks and has low FPS. NVIDIA documents it as a troubleshooting option. Apply it to that application; setting it globally may raise idle power and heat without helping. NVIDIA’s instructions.
  • Max Frame Rate: Use the driver’s cap if the game lacks a suitable limiter or you want to control power and frame pacing. The useful value depends on refresh rate, VRR behavior, game engine, and latency target; a rule of thumb is only a starting point. NVIDIA’s frame-rate limiting guidance.
  • G-SYNC: Enable it for a compatible display if smoother variable-refresh presentation is your goal. It addresses tearing and stutter, not the GPU’s rendering speed. NVIDIA’s settings reference.

The NVIDIA in-game performance overlay can show FPS, clocks, temperatures, and related data. NVIDIA explains how to use the overlay.

AMD settings: preserve useful defaults, tune cautiously

In AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, prefer per-game profiles where possible. AMD says Shader Cache stores compiled shaders to avoid repeated compilation, while Surface Format Optimization should remain enabled for an optimal gaming experience. Leave cache behavior at its optimized default unless addressing a specific problem; repeatedly clearing it can force recompilation and worsen initial stutter. AMD’s feature guidance.

Frame Rate Target Control can cap a game when steadier performance or lower power use matters more than uncapped FPS. Treat aggressive tessellation overrides as a game-specific compatibility experiment, not a universal speed improvement.

Adrenalin GPU tuning can change clocks, voltage, VRAM, fans, and power. AMD says a failed stress test or crash can reset tuning to default. Start from stock settings, change one variable, stress-test, then run the games you actually play. Watch for artifacts, driver timeouts, black screens, reboots, and worse performance; revert at the first sign of instability. AMD’s tuning and stress-test guidance.

Resizable BAR: enable only with a supported platform

Resizable BAR lets a compatible system expose a larger portion of a discrete GPU’s framebuffer over PCIe. Support depends on GPU, motherboard firmware, driver, and platform configuration, and game results vary. Microsoft documents the operating-system and driver support model at its Resizable BAR support page.

  1. Check motherboard and GPU support; update the motherboard BIOS/UEFI and chipset drivers if needed.
  2. In firmware, enable Above 4G Decoding and Resizable BAR if offered.
  3. Some systems require UEFI boot and disabling Compatibility Support Module (CSM). Do not change legacy boot settings without understanding how Windows is installed; a firmware change can prevent booting.
  4. Verify the feature in the GPU vendor’s control panel or monitoring tool, then compare the games you care about.
  5. If the system no longer boots, restore the previous firmware settings rather than forcing undocumented driver profiles.

Overclocking and undervolting are optional advanced tuning

Overclocking may improve a GPU-bound workload, but it can cause artifacts, crashes, driver timeouts, higher heat and power use, or lower sustained clocks if cooling becomes saturated. Warranty and support consequences vary by manufacturer and jurisdiction.

Undervolting aims to use less voltage for a chosen performance level. It can reduce heat, power, and fan noise, and may help a thermally or power-constrained card sustain boost more consistently. It cannot add hardware resources or guarantee higher FPS; an overly aggressive voltage reduction can cause instability or force lower clocks.

  1. Save or note the stock profile so you can restore it.
  2. Use the vendor’s tuning tool and change one setting at a time; begin conservatively.
  3. Run a short stress test, then a longer session in demanding games or the actual workload.
  4. Compare average and percentile FPS, frame times, temperature, power, and noise against stock.
  5. Return to defaults if you see artifacts, crashes, driver resets, black screens, or regressions. A synthetic test alone does not prove game stability.

Reduce background conflicts and diagnose shader stutter

Launchers, recording tools, browser video, RGB utilities, communication overlays, monitoring tools, cloud sync, antivirus scans, virtual machines, and other GPU-accelerated apps can compete for resources. They do not all cause a problem on every PC. Test by disabling one suspected overlay or app, restarting the game, and comparing the frame-time graph. Keep one monitoring overlay active while diagnosing to avoid adding more variables.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stutter on the first run after a game or driver update may come from shader compilation or asset streaming rather than a weak GPU. Let the game’s shader-precompilation finish, restart, and compare repeated runs through the same scene. Clear a cache only when investigating corruption or a specific issue; rebuilding shaders can make the next run stutter more. AMD’s shader-cache explanation describes why caching reduces repeated shader work.

Laptop-specific checks

  • Connect the manufacturer-approved charger and confirm the laptop recognizes it.
  • Set the OEM performance profile when plugged in, then select the discrete GPU for the game in Windows graphics settings.
  • Use Windows Best performance only when the extra heat and battery drain are acceptable.
  • Keep vents unobstructed and compare sustained clocks and temperatures; do not assume a cooling pad will help every chassis.
  • Test the internal and an external display separately if GPU routing may differ. Battery-mode performance is not a useful comparison when the goal is plugged-in gaming.

Match the symptom to the next test

Symptom First action Avoid
Low FPS, GPU near full use Reduce a GPU-heavy setting, try upscaling, and check sustained temperatures. CPU or registry tweaks without evidence.
Low FPS, GPU underused Check CPU-thread load, frame cap, selected GPU, and power mode. Blindly raising the GPU power limit.
Stutter after a game or driver update Allow shader preparation, compare repeat runs, and test overlays or driver rollback. Repeatedly clearing shader cache.
FPS falls over time Watch temperature, hotspot, fan speed, clocks, and power during a sustained run. Adding more clock speed before addressing heat.
Crashes or artifacts Restore stock tuning and test a known-stable driver. Continuing an unstable overclock.
Laptop performance is poor Connect charger, check OEM mode, GPU selection, and cooling. Comparing battery FPS with plugged-in performance expectations.
Tearing or uneven presentation Check monitor refresh rate and compatible VRR/G-SYNC/FreeSync settings. Expecting display sync to increase raw FPS.
High FPS but sluggish input Test the game’s latency option, a frame cap, and queueing behavior. Enabling every latency setting at once.
VRAM full with stutter Reduce textures, resolution, ray tracing, or texture-pack size. Assuming system RAM replaces VRAM without a performance cost.
GPU is not boosting as expected Check power connections, temperatures, driver profile, and PCIe seating. Forcing maximum clocks globally.

Know when tuning has reached its limit

If repeatable tests show the GPU is consistently fully loaded at the quality and resolution you want, and it is not throttling or misconfigured, a faster GPU may be the real solution. Choose for the games and workloads you use, target resolution, VRAM needs, ray tracing, power draw, case clearance, PSU requirements, and application support—not a peak-performance claim alone.

If the GPU is underused and a CPU thread is saturated, a GPU upgrade may do little; investigate CPU limits, engine behavior, simulation settings, and background work. If memory is the constraint, look for a card with enough VRAM for the texture and resolution demands. If the card is throttling, fix cooling or power delivery first. If the problem is shader stutter or a frame cap, buying hardware may not address it.
