If Red Dead Redemption 2 crashes on a Windows PC with ERR_GFX_STATE, first update your graphics driver, test the other graphics API (Vulkan or DirectX 12), and clear the game’s sga_ cache files. If it crashes before you can reach Settings, change the API in system.xml. Rockstar also provides the launch argument -ignorepipelinecache for a class of boot crashes. These are troubleshooting steps, not a guaranteed single fix: the error can have more than one cause.
What ERR_GFX_STATE means
ERR_GFX_STATE is a broad graphics or renderer crash label, not a definitive diagnosis of a failing GPU or one specific cache problem. Rockstar has documented it in connection with boot crashes addressed by a pipeline-cache launch option and with a crash caused by running out of system memory. Graphics API settings, drivers, overlays, and damaged game files can also be worth checking. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.15 notes describe the launch option; its Title Update 1.19 notes document the system-memory case.
The steps below are for the Windows PC version, regardless of whether you own the game through Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, or Epic Games Store. Start with the least disruptive renderer and cache checks; leave settings resets and launcher-profile changes until later.
Try these first
- Update the graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer’s official site. If the crash began immediately after a driver update, note that timing and consider a clean reinstall or, if needed, a rollback.
- If the game reaches its menu, switch between Vulkan and DirectX 12, save, and relaunch.
- With the game and launcher closed, delete files beginning with
sga_from the RDR2 Settings folder. - If it still crashes at boot, add
-ignorepipelinecacheto the game’s launch arguments. - Verify the game files in the storefront where you installed RDR2.
- Temporarily disable overlays, monitoring utilities, mods, and injectors.
- If the crash persists, check memory pressure and hardware stability before resetting settings or reinstalling.
Switch the graphics API
If you can reach the main menu
- Launch RDR2 and open Settings → Graphics → Advanced Settings.
- If the advanced settings are locked, set their display to Unlocked.
- Change Graphics API from Vulkan to DirectX 12, or from DirectX 12 to Vulkan.
- Save the setting, then close and relaunch the game to test it.
Rockstar recommends testing DirectX 12 when Vulkan is in use in its ERR_GFX_STATE support guidance. The purpose is to test the alternate renderer: neither API is guaranteed to be faster or more stable on every PC. If the change causes worse performance, stutter, graphical problems, or new crashes, try the original API again after clearing the cache files below.

If the game crashes before Settings opens
- Close RDR2 and exit Rockstar Games Launcher completely.
- Open
%USERPROFILE%DocumentsRockstar GamesRed Dead Redemption 2Settings. If your Documents folder is redirected or the path is missing, search your Windows profile forsystem.xml. - Make a backup copy of
system.xml, then open the original in Notepad. - Find the graphics API setting and change its value from Vulkan to DirectX 12, or the other way around. The file’s structure can differ between builds, so change the existing API value rather than replacing the whole file with a template.
- Save the file, delete the
sga_files in the same folder, and relaunch the game.
These folder and file steps are included in Rockstar’s graphics-initialization troubleshooting instructions. ERR_GFX_INIT is a different error label; the shared settings and cache steps do not make the two errors interchangeable.
Clear the graphics and pipeline cache
- Close the game and launcher.
- Open
%USERPROFILE%DocumentsRockstar GamesRed Dead Redemption 2Settings. - Delete the files whose names begin with
sga_. Keepsystem.xmlif you still need its current settings. - Relaunch the game and allow it to rebuild the cache.
The next launch may take longer or behave differently while cache data is rebuilt. If Windows hides file extensions, make sure you are deleting the actual sga_ files rather than creating or renaming a file by mistake. Rockstar specifically recommends removing these files as part of its graphics troubleshooting steps, but their presence does not prove that cache corruption is the cause of every ERR_GFX_STATE crash.
Use the official pipeline-cache launch argument
Rockstar added this argument in Title Update 1.15 to address boot crashes displaying ERR_GFX_STATE:
-ignorepipelinecache
Add it in the launch options for the storefront you use: Rockstar Games Launcher has a Launch arguments field for RDR2 in launcher settings; Epic provides an additional command-line arguments setting for the game; and Steam has a launch-options field in the game’s properties. Launcher labels and menus can change, so look for the game-specific launch arguments or options field. Enter the argument exactly as shown, without quotation marks.

Treat this as a targeted workaround, not a permanent or universal cure. Remove unrelated launch arguments while testing; if this option does not help, remove it rather than stacking undocumented arguments. Rockstar’s graphics-stalling guidance also advises removing launch arguments during troubleshooting.
Update or troubleshoot the graphics driver
Get drivers from the manufacturer of the GPU actually running the game:
Rockstar’s general RDR2 PC troubleshooting recommends updating graphics drivers and identifies the AMD Cleanup Utility as a way to address legacy AMD driver information, including on systems with current or previous AMD graphics hardware. Use it only where relevant and follow AMD’s own instructions.
A current driver is a sensible first check, not a promise that the crash will be fixed. If the problem started right after a driver change, first try a clean installation of a current driver. A rollback is a reasonable diagnostic only when the timing points to that update; there is no single older version established as best for every GPU, Windows version, and game build. Avoid third-party driver-download or “optimizer” tools.

Verify RDR2’s game files
File verification checks the installed game data and can repair files without immediately downloading the entire game again. Use the storefront where the game is installed:
Rockstar Games Launcher
- Sign in and open Settings.
- Select RDR2 under My installed games.
- Choose Verify Integrity under Verify game file integrity, then let the scan and any repair finish.

Epic Games Launcher
- Open the Epic Games Library.
- Open the options or cog menu for RDR2 and choose Verify.
- Wait for verification to finish before launching.
Rockstar documents this path in its Epic verification guidance.
Steam
Use Steam’s Verify integrity of game files function for RDR2. The wording or menu location may change; Rockstar directs Steam players to Steam’s own verification process in its unexpected-exit troubleshooting guidance.

Isolate overlays, mods, and monitoring tools
Overlays and injectors can interact with the game’s rendering path, so temporarily remove them from the test rather than assuming they are the cause. Rockstar specifically calls out RivaTuner in its crash guidance.
- Close RivaTuner Statistics Server and disable MSI Afterburner’s in-game overlay.
- Temporarily turn off Discord, Steam, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD performance overlays, and other recording or monitoring overlays.
- Disable ReShade, mods, custom DLLs, and other injectors to test a stock game installation.
Where practical, disable one category at a time and test the game, then re-enable utilities individually if the crash stops. Rockstar’s crash troubleshooting article includes RivaTuner and the launcher log location.

Rockstar’s Title Update 1.19 notes establish that a system-memory exhaustion crash could produce ERR_GFX_STATE. That does not mean the error proves inadequate RAM or defective video memory. If crashes happen while loading, after long sessions, or only in demanding scenes, check the conditions at the time of failure:
- Close memory-heavy programs such as browsers and video editors. Watch Memory and GPU usage in Task Manager during launch or loading.
- If you can reach the graphics menu, lower texture quality and other demanding settings as a test.
- Temporarily return GPU, CPU, and RAM overclocks or undervolts to a stable default profile. A factory overclock alone does not establish a fault.
- Note whether it happens only in a particular save, location, benchmark, Story Mode, or Red Dead Online; check temperatures and signs of throttling.
- On a laptop or multi-GPU PC, confirm that Windows or the GPU vendor’s settings direct RDR2 to the intended discrete GPU; the exact interface varies.
A benchmark-only crash is useful diagnostic information, but by itself does not show that ordinary gameplay is unstable. Likewise, a crash limited to Red Dead Online may involve a separate launcher, entitlement, or network issue; distinguish those errors from the graphics message.

Reset settings or launcher data only if needed
Reset RDR2 settings
If changing renderers and clearing sga_ files has not helped, close the game and launcher, then back up the entire folder %USERPROFILE%DocumentsRockstar GamesRed Dead Redemption 2Settings. After confirming the backup, remove the settings files so the game can recreate them on launch. Do not delete the whole DocumentsRockstar Games directory: the targeted Settings folder is not the same as your save-game folders. If OneDrive or another sync service visibly restores the same settings after removal, back them up and temporarily pause that sync while testing.
Check permissions only when they fit the symptoms
If the launcher or game cannot write to its folders, test administrator privileges for RDR2.exe: open the game’s installation folder, right-click the executable, choose Properties → Compatibility, and test Run this program as an administrator. Rockstar documents this for a game-library permission error in its RDR2 launch-privileges guidance. This is a diagnostic, not a blanket requirement; running everything as administrator can obscure the underlying folder-permission problem.
Clear the launcher’s local profile only if it appears corrupted
As a late step, Rockstar’s general troubleshooting guidance supports deleting the Launcher’s local profile and signing in again. This removes local profile details and requires another sign-in, but does not delete your Rockstar account or saved games. Use the procedure in Rockstar’s general troubleshooting article rather than deleting unrelated Rockstar folders.
When to reinstall and what to send Rockstar Support
Reinstalling the entire game is a last resort: first verify files, reset the relevant settings and cache, and test drivers and overlays. A reinstall may not remove settings or cache stored separately in Documents, so it may leave the original problem untouched.

- When it crashes: startup, menu, loading, benchmark, a particular save, or during play.
- Whether RDR2 was using Vulkan or DirectX 12, and which storefront you use.
- GPU model and driver version, Windows version, and installed RAM.
- The exact error text and whether the issue began after a game, Windows, driver, or hardware change.
Rockstar lists the default launcher log at DocumentsRockstar GamesLauncherlauncher.log in its unexpected-exit guidance. Include it when contacting Rockstar Support, along with the timing and system details above.
