To cancel a Steam preorder, request a refund through Steam Support. Steam says you can generally request one any time before the game’s official release; after release, the standard time and playtime limits apply. Use the Steam account that made the purchase.
Cancel a Steam preorder: quick steps

Sign in to Steam Support with the account that bought the preorder.

Open your purchase history, either through Steam Support’s Purchases section or the account’s purchase-history link.

Select the preorder and choose the refund option, typically labeled “I would like a refund.”

Choose a refund destination if Steam offers one, select a reason, and submit the request. Labels and page layouts can vary.
Steam handles cancellation as a refund request; there is not necessarily a separate preorder-cancellation control. See Steam’s refund-request instructions if you need help with the submission flow.
Can you cancel before the game releases?
Yes. Steam’s preorder policy says a preorder can generally be refunded any time before the game’s release. One limitation concerns the refund destination: for a preorder purchased more than six months earlier, the original payment method may no longer be available, and Steam may offer Steam Wallet credit instead.

What if the game has already released?
After release, the preorder is subject to Steam’s normal game-refund rule: the request should be submitted within 14 days of the game’s release, and recorded playtime must be under two hours. The 14-day period is measured from the game’s release date, not from the date you placed the preorder.

You can still submit a request outside the usual limits, but Steam reviews it and approval is not guaranteed.
Advanced Access: distinguish early access from release
If the preorder includes Advanced Access, Steam says you can request a refund before Advanced Access begins. The standard 14-day refund period starts on the game’s official release date, not when Advanced Access starts. Once you have begun playing, the ordinary playtime limit still matters; do not assume that starting Advanced Access gives you a fresh 14 days to play and then request a refund.

Where does the refund go, and how long does it take?
Steam may return an approved refund to the original payment method or offer Steam Wallet credit, depending on the payment method and purchase. Wallet credit is useful if you plan to spend the money on Steam, but it is not cash. For a preorder bought more than six months ago, the original payment method may not be offered.
Steam says an approved refund can take up to seven days to appear; approved Steam Wallet refunds may appear within 24–48 hours. International payment methods can take longer. If a refund is approved within 24 hours of purchase, Steam may cancel the original transaction instead of issuing a separate credit. A pending card authorization can take time to disappear, so you may not see a distinct refund entry.

If the gift has not been redeemed, the purchaser may be able to start the refund process directly. If the recipient redeemed it, Steam’s procedure requires the recipient to sign in to Steam Support and approve the refund and removal of the gift from their account. The purchaser can then submit the refund request. Steam says this process can apply even after redemption.

If the preorder is missing or Steam rejects the request
The purchase does not appear

Check that you are signed into the account that made the purchase. A gift or a purchase on another account will not appear in the current account’s history.

Check whether the payment completed or is still being authorized. A declined or failed card authorization can cause a game to disappear from the Library and prompt another purchase, according to Steam’s payment-authorization guidance.

Confirm that the preorder was bought directly from Steam and has not already been refunded or removed. A key bought from another retailer is generally subject to that retailer’s refund process, not Steam’s direct-purchase refund workflow.

The refund request was denied

Check the official release date and the playtime Steam records, including offline and shared-library playtime.

Confirm you submitted the request from the purchasing account and selected the correct transaction.

If the decision appears to overlook a relevant fact, submit another Steam Support request with a concise explanation. Include details such as Advanced Access timing, a payment authorization that never settled, a duplicate purchase, or a regional consumer-rights issue.
Steam says it will review requests outside its usual refund rules, but that does not guarantee approval. Avoid treating a bank chargeback as a routine substitute for a refund request; a chargeback is a payment dispute and can complicate account or payment access. For an unauthorized transaction or a genuine unresolved payment dispute, review Steam’s guidance on payment disputes and chargebacks.

For the preorder payment, refund, or Steam-account problem, start with Steam Support. A game publisher or developer is the more relevant contact for gameplay bugs, server issues, third-party DRM or activation, and other game-specific technical questions after launch. Steam explains this distinction in its third-party support guidance.
Players in the EU or UK should also consult Steam’s EU/UK withdrawal-rights and refund information if the standard refund route does not resolve their situation. Those regional rules should not be assumed to apply worldwide.
