The Elusive Low-Profile GTX 1660: Myth or Reality?

Compact GTX 1660 cards exist, but a short Mini-ITX design is not necessarily low profile. Here’s how to check fit and choose a documented alternative.

Short answer: a true, mainstream retail low-profile GTX 1660 is not documented in the major manufacturer catalogs reviewed here. Compact GTX 1660 cards do exist, but “Mini-ITX” usually describes a shorter card, not one with the reduced height and short bracket required by a slim desktop. For a documented low-profile alternative, consider an RTX 3050 6GB LP; a GTX 1650 LP is a lower-power, lower-performance option.

Low-profile means short in height, not short in length

Graphics-card dimensions describe different constraints. Length runs from the rear bracket toward the front of the case; height is the dimension that determines whether the card fits below the roof of a slim chassis. Thickness determines how many adjacent slots or how much neighboring space the cooler occupies.

  • Mini-ITX or compact: generally a shorter card, which can help in a small case with a limited front-to-back clearance.
  • Low profile: a reduced-height card designed for a slim expansion slot, normally paired with a short bracket.
  • Single-slot: a separate thickness requirement. A low-profile card can still occupy two slots.

MSI’s GTX 1650 4GT LP specification makes the height distinction concrete: it lists 168 × 105 × 37 mm with a normal bracket and 168 × 69 × 37 mm with the low-profile bracket. The shorter bracket does not excuse checking the cooler and PCB height against the case. MSI’s dimensions and specifications.

Why the GTX 1660 Mini-ITX is mistaken for a low-profile card

Gigabyte’s GeForce GTX 1660 Mini ITX OC is a real compact card, listed at 170 mm long. Its official product page calls out its compact size but does not identify it as a low-profile design or specify a low-profile bracket. Treat it as a short, likely full-height card unless the exact card’s dimensions and bracket are independently confirmed. Gigabyte’s GTX 1660 Mini ITX OC product page.

The GTX 1660 SUPER also appeared in a 170 mm Gigabyte Mini-ITX model. That is evidence of a shorter card, not a low-profile-height version. Other database entries and seller listings may describe short or unusual GTX 1660 models, but names such as “Mini,” “ITX,” “compact,” and “SFF” do not establish bracket format or case compatibility. Gigabyte’s GTX 1660 SUPER Mini ITX page; TechPowerUp’s GTX 1660 database entry.

Confusion also comes from marketplace categories and photos: search results may mix full-height GTX 1660 cards with genuine GTX 1650 LP, RTX 3050 LP, or RX 6400 LP models. A removable short bracket is not enough if the PCB or cooler remains too tall, and a listing that says “LP” is not proof without clear measurements and the actual bracket.

What is established about a retail low-profile GTX 1660?

No normal, manufacturer-documented retail low-profile GTX 1660 is established by the product evidence cited here. That is a careful product-catalog conclusion, not proof that no OEM, regional, modified, or custom example has ever existed. A GPU database entry or seller title alone does not verify a card’s height, bracket, or broad retail availability.

A compact cooler and PCB must manage the specific card’s heat within the available height and airflow. It is reasonable to see power and cooling as possible engineering constraints on a low-profile design, but that is an inference—not a manufacturer-confirmed explanation for why a mainstream retail model is not documented.

Which low-profile alternatives make sense?

Option Documented specifications or evidence Best fit Main trade-off
MSI RTX 3050 LP 6G OC 6 GB GDDR6; 70 W; 300 W recommended PSU; 174 × 69 × 42 mm; one DisplayPort and two HDMI outputs; no auxiliary PCIe connector listed in the datasheet. MSI datasheet. Buyers wanting a genuine low-profile card with 6 GB and newer NVIDIA features, including ray-tracing hardware and DLSS. Price and 42 mm height can rule it out; it is not a guaranteed GTX 1660 performance equivalent in every workload.
Gigabyte RTX 3050 OC Low Profile 6G 181 mm long, 6 GB GDDR6, low-profile bracket included, up to four displays using two DisplayPort and two HDMI outputs. Gigabyte product page. Buyers who need the listed display-output selection and a low-profile bracket. Verify the exact card’s height, thickness, and 181 mm length against the case.
MSI GTX 1650 4GT LP OC 4 GB GDDR5; 75 W; 300 W recommended PSU; 168 × 69 × 37 mm with the low-profile bracket; HDMI and DVI outputs. MSI specifications. Older OEM systems and buyers prioritizing modest power draw and a relatively small card. It is not a GTX 1660 performance equivalent; it has 4 GB VRAM and an older feature set.
Radeon RX 6400 low-profile model Retail search results identify low-profile models, but no specific manufacturer model is established here by a sufficiently strong official product page. Newegg low-profile graphics-card listings. Systems where low power and no auxiliary connector matter more than maximum performance. Common concerns include 4 GB VRAM, PCIe 4.0 x4 performance on older PCIe 3.0 systems, and video-encoding limitations. Verify the exact model before purchase.
Used compact GTX 1660 Gigabyte documents a 170 mm Mini-ITX model, but its page does not establish low-profile height or bracket. Gigabyte product page. A case that accepts a full-height card but has limited card length. It does not solve a low-height requirement; used listings need physical and electrical verification.

The MSI store displayed the RTX 3050 LP 6G OC at $209.99 promotional pricing, reduced from $219.99, and marked it in stock when the page was crawled. This is a dated price signal, not a current or guaranteed offer. MSI Store product page.

  1. Measure clearance: record the case’s maximum card height, length, and thickness or available adjacent slots. Check for drive cages, PSU placement, and other obstructions.
  2. Confirm bracket and cooler: verify the actual low-profile bracket is included and replaceable. Check that the card’s PCB and cooler—not just its bracket—fit the height limit.
  3. Check power delivery: inspect whether the system has a six- or eight-pin PCIe power lead, then compare the exact card’s connector and vendor PSU guidance with the OEM PSU and system load. Do not treat a vendor’s recommended PSU wattage as a guarantee for every prebuilt system.
  4. Check slot layout: distinguish low-profile height from single-slot thickness. A dual-slot cooler can block another slot or fail in a chassis with an obstruction beside the PCIe slot.
  5. Match display outputs: confirm the card has the HDMI, DisplayPort, or DVI connection your monitor requires, including any adapter needs.
  6. Check platform constraints: review the exact system’s BIOS behavior, secure-boot requirements, riser arrangement, and cooling. Slim cases can have limited intake airflow even when the card physically fits.

PCIe electrical compatibility does not settle these questions. A GTX 1660 is a PCIe 3.0-class card, but case geometry, power delivery, airflow, firmware, and display connections can still prevent a successful OEM SFF upgrade.

Buying used: evidence to ask the seller for

For a used compact GTX 1660 or a questionable “LP” listing, request evidence of the actual card rather than relying on the title:

  • Clear photos of the card and rear bracket.
  • Exact model number and measurements in millimeters.
  • Bracket format and confirmation that any low-profile bracket is included.
  • Card thickness and cooler overhang, plus the required power connector.
  • Return terms and seller reputation.

For a short GTX 1660, specifically confirm full card height: a length of 170 mm does not make it suitable for a slim case. Avoid listings that substitute “Mini,” “ITX,” “SFF,” or “LP” for dimensions.
